"The Messengers" is an appealing and entertaining cross between "Heroes" and "Supernatural" and has the potential to be just the hit The CW needs and viewers deserve.

A general rule of thumb in TV reviewing: When press notes do a better job of explaining a show's intent than the show itself, viewers beware.

Fans of apocalypse tales will want to watch on.

The Messengers seems to have its sci-fi basics in order.

It's clearly a letdown, and while letdowns in TV are not exactly shocking, they remain unwelcome.

Anyone have a good "shoot 'The Messengers'" line I could borrow to close with? I've stopped caring enough to dream up my own.

It is smartly assembled - Stephen Williams, who directed 26 episodes of Lost, made the good-looking pilot - and there may be enough gas in these characters to get them somewhere interesting.

What's it about? Oh, that's a good question, and one that (based on a single episode) is impossible to answer.

Could The Messengers deliver some kind of coherent story without sensationalizing, or worse, trivializing the beliefs of millions? Who knows? But skipping it shouldn't be the end of the world.

The only episode available for review has the feel of a kid dumping out his toy box -- hey, look! It's a bullied teen with superhuman strength!

The CW has given birth to good series late in the year before, but The Messengers seems far-fetched, even by its standards.

Fingers crossed, as there's potential here for an notable, complex plot moving forward.

The oddest thing about The Messengers is that its tone is somehow askew, like a dress that looks amazing on the rack but doesn't quite fit when worn by an actual human being.

The Messengers is a fantasy series about the coming Rapture and the five new angels forced to join forces to fight the devil himself. But it's sunk by sinfully hokey plot twists.

With such a complicated subject matter, The Messengers certainly has its work cut out for it to stay coherent while still staying accessible.

The Messengers is one of those teasing constructs that elicits more skepticism than enthusiasm, initially revealing little about the nature of the threat or what must be done to prevent it.

Putting wings on a human-looking character, even an angel, is never a good idea outside of a kiddie church pageant. That said, The Messengers certainly offers enough in its premiere to be worth a return visit next week, just to see where it's going.

While the initial pacing is a bit slow, the story is intriguing enough that The Messengers warrants a second look.
