      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The storyline is overwrought and awkward, and the audience is distanced from the flatly drawn characters.

Steve D No one is given much to do in this emotionally manipulative nonsense. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/31/24 Full Review Kathryn V I saw this movie a lot of years ago. CNt stream it anywhere now. Couple of years I've been looking. Finally ordered the dvd. One of the best love stories I had seen since Warren Beatty and Natalie Wood, splendor in the grass. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/23 Full Review Audience Member tragic story in the world war era brilliant actors & actresses (all of them! but especialy Johnny depp and Cate Blanchett) Salvatore Licitra's penetrating opera aria 'Je Crois Entendre Encore' Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Jan L An interesting film beginning in Europe between the wars, using some stalwarts of the European cinema for the cinematography so beautifully lit and photographed. The story is very intriguing: one of love, loss, the dispossessed and the outcasts at a time of the upheaval of war, yet ultimately about the human character. Somewhat frustrating in that it leaves this viewer wanting to know so much more about the back stories of each and every character. Boasting a very starry cast lead by Christina Ricci and Cate Blanchett who are both excellent as it John Turturro as the stroppy opera star; however Johnny Depp steals every scene he is in and as the script is very sparse in dialogue, one aches for the sound of his voice to tell his characters story. Wonderfully atmospheric music throughout. An overlooked and very much under appreciated film.
