Long Way Home Lyrics

[Intro: Ashton]
We're taking the long way home (Taking the long way home)

[Verse 1: Luke]
Take me back to the middle of nowhere
Back to the place only you and I share
Remember all the memories?
The fireflies and make-believe
Kicking back in the old school yard
Singing songs on our guitars
This is our reality
Crazy stupid, you and me

[Pre-Chorus: Luke]
We know this is the way it's supposed to be

[Chorus: All, Ashton, Luke]
So we're taking the long way home (Taking the long way—)
'Cause I don't wanna be wasting my time alone
I wanna get lost and drive forever with you
Talking 'bout nothing, yeah, whatever, baby
So we're taking the long way home (Taking the long way—) tonight

[Post-Chorus: All, Luke, Ashton]
Ooh-ooh
We're taking the long way home
Ooh-ooh
(We're taking the long way home)
Taking the long way home
[Verse 2: Michael, Michael & Calum, Luke]
Now we're stuck in the middle of nowhere
Yeah, you know we took our time to get there
We're hiding out in a dream
Catching fire like kerosene
(Kerosene)
And you know I'd never let you down
Till the sun comes up, we can own this town
Something like make-believe
Living in a movie scene

[Pre-Chorus: Michael & Calum]
We know this is the way it's supposed to be

[Chorus: All, Ashton]
So we're taking the long way home (Taking the long way—)
'Cause I don't wanna be wasting my time alone
I wanna get lost and drive forever with you
Talking 'bout nothing, yeah, whatever, baby
So we're taking the long way home (Taking the long way—)

[Bridge: Calum, Calum & Michael]
Hittin' every red light
Kissin' at the stop signs, darlin'
Green Day's on the radio
And everything is alright (Alright)
Now we're turnin' off the headlights, darlin'
We're just taking it slow
[Breakdown: Luke, Luke & Michael]
So we're taking the long way home
'Cause I don't wanna be wasting my time alone

[Chorus: All]
I wanna get lost and drive forever with you
Talking 'bout nothing, yeah, whatever, baby
So we're taking the long way home

[Bridge: Calum, Ashton]
Hittin' every red light (Red light)
Kissin' at the stop signs, darlin'
Green Day's on the radio (Oh-oh-oh-oh)
And everything is alright (Alright)
Now we're turnin' off the headlights, darlin'
We're just taking it slow

[Outro: Luke & Calum, Calum]
We're taking the long way home (Oh-oh, oh-oh)
We're taking the long way home (Oh-oh, oh-oh)
We're taking the long way home

About

Genius Annotation

“Long Way Home” is the ninth track on 5SOS’s self-titled debut. It talks about two of their loves: their actual loved one, and music, of course.

The title references “taking the long way home”, which is normally only done to see more beauty, or spend more time with a person. In this song, they do both.

From their Track By Track:

Ashton: We wrote this song with Alex Gaskarth and John Feldmann, and this was the first time I met Alex.

Michael: Me too.

Luke: So we wrote “Kiss Me Kiss Me” on the first day, and these guys went in and wrote this song the second day.

Ashton: I remember meeting Alex and we were all sitting out by John’s pool…

Michael: …a massive pool and he had this little nylon string acoustic and he was like, “I have this idea for a song,” and he was like, “It’s okay.”

Ashton: And he was like, “So we’re taking the long way home,” and I was like, “‘Cause I don’t wanna be.” And it was a beautiful moment for me, I was sitting there writing a song with…

Michael: It was within like 15 minutes of getting there, we had this chorus idea already.

Ashton: But like, the moment of just sitting there with your absolute idol, and writing a chorus, and the full song was just like, “This is actually happening.” It was amazing for us.
