After a Tibetan boy, the mystical Golden Child, is kidnapped by the evil Sardo Numspa, humankind's fate hangs in the balance. On the other side of the world in Los Angeles, the priestess Kee Nang seeks the Chosen One, who will save the boy from death. When Nang sees social worker Chandler Jarrell on television discussing his ability to find missing children, she solicits his expertise, despite his skepticism over being "chosen."

It's kinda, like, 'Big Trouble in Little China' — but, you know, nowhere near as good.

Fantasy comedy adventure with a crazy winged hell demon creature, Eddie Murphy as a social worker, and Charles Dance as an evil villain named Sardo Numspa could only be made in 1986.
This was a major blind spot for me and I wish I could’ve seen this when I was younger, it’s one of those movies… ridiculous well paced fun thats deceivingly creative despite its familiar journey—I loved the effects, the wild dream sequence (that was the turning point of the movie where I knew I loved it), how Charles Dance owns every evil role he’s in, the reluctant hero moron/idiot chosen one storyline, the winged demon finale, and the appearances of Victor Wong and James Hong.
Carpenter vibed fun and undervalued Murphy if you ask me, plus those dark touches of demons and hell visits were very welcomed, lol at the henchmen in this.
Big Trouble in Little… Tibet????????
Recently, I have been paying more attention to this film than ever before, mostly because many people here have been reviewing it for the last month or so. My interest was piqued further by comparisons to films such as Big Trouble In Little China.
Well, Murphy may not be Kurt Russell but he's definitely the reason this movie is worth watching. Throughout every moment, his personality, comedic timing, and style makes everything feel fresh, funny, and somehow interesting. Although the film is mainly fantasy and whimsical in tone, there is probably a fairly cool training scene that was almost thrilling.

Honestly, not even sure how much I enjoyed this wacky horror-action-comedy starring Eddie Murphy (at the peak of his superstardom), but you have to admire the audacity of everyone involved.

When you watch trash like this there are going to be tons of logistical problems, sure. But if you are at all watching this what you’re holding out for is wacky fun and weird detours, which come, but in short increments. The Golden Child is unfortunately less goofy than it is earnest.…

While this wasn't an absolute favorite from my childhood, I did have fond memories of watching it more than once. There were a lot of these kinds of movies in the 80's after Raiders of the Lost Ark came out, and I made a point to see them all. If anything, this is more similar to Big Trouble in Little China, now that I have more years of film observation under my belt.

Eddie Murphy, the quintessential womanizing badass from New York, does battle with a demon over the life of a a child that can bring the dead back to life. There's several pretty awful factors with this one, including a CGI demon from the technology of '86, some really goofy scenes and idiotic henchmen. Yet I think this is a bit of a 'twin movie' with Big Trouble in Little China, released the same year. Both are kind of slap-stick comedy/action/fantasy mixes. I do think this one takes itself much more seriously than it should with it's goofy henchmen, obviously and awfully choreographed martial arts sequences and the whole good versus evil theme, but it's not a bad watch. back in the 80s you could put a crazyass line like "one of her ancient ancestors was raped by a dragon." and everyone involved in the production was like, yeah, sure, put that in the movie, why not?
this & beverly hills cop 2 might be the absolute height of eddie murphy's egomania; this film literally introduces his character with a song that describes him as "the best man in the world".
