Once lost, now found and restored, The Ghoul is an attractive, nigh expressionistic, production with foggy dark streets and gorgeous sets. However, the movie is better-looking than it is good.
A clunky adaptation from its theatrical script, the confused story centers on a sacred thingamajig, now in the hands of a dying Egyptologist (Boris Karloff). A whole smattering of players want to get their hands on this item, from which Karloff’s corpse becomes separated.
I’m with Scrambled Face, agreeing that “you'll be praying to Anubis that Karloff comes back and throttles all of these shrill jokers ASAP.”
Lowered expectations might help, but it is quite a good-looking film.
Also, this Deco movie poster is amazing, too.
