The broadcast for the 93rd Academy Awards ended with a bit of shock, a little surprise, and a decent amount of confusion, as the customary order of Oscars awarded was switched up—with Best Picture being awarded (to Nomadland) third to last. In its place, the show chose the Best Actor award to anchor the show, likely expecting that the late Chadwick Boseman—the heavy frontrunner for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom—to win. Instead, though, the award went to Anthony Hopkins, who at 83 became the oldest actor to ever win an Oscar for his leading role in The Father.
If you haven't heard of The Father, or anything particularly about the performance Hopkins gives in it, that's OK. It's been a weird year at the movies, with theaters remaining in flux.
The Father is a special movie, one that isn't centered on fantasy epics, blockbuster action, or even a niche story—it tells the story of something almost anyone can relate to: a loved one getting older and slowly slipping away. Hopkins and Olivia Colman (an Academy Award winner two years ago for The Favourite) play father and daughter who both play their own parts in the all-to-relatable part of life that finds father, dealing with the effects of dementia, utterly reluctant to accept the help of daughter.

Hopkins wasn't the only one from The Father honored at this year's Academy Awards. The movie's writers, Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller (who also directed) also won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Colman was nominated once again for her turn, this time in the Best Supporting Actress category. The movie also received nominations for Best Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Picture.
With a 98% score from critics and a 91% from fans on Rotten Tomatoes, The Father is not only one of the big winners from Oscar night, but also one of the most highly-praised movies of the year.
