The DVD was great, The Blu-ray blew my brain on a 70 inch TV, The 4K version with a new 4K 70 inch tv melted my brain. I saw colors and back ground things I had never seen before. The sound track is also wonderful in 7.1 surround sound with a Denon receiver.

The Dark Crystal came out in 1982 and is arguably Jim Henson's masterpiece - he seemed to think so himself. My granddaughter is named Kira after the heroine in this movie, so I know it had an impact on my son who was 12 when it came out. The audience roots for the two Gelflings in their struggle to make the world a better place and you forget quickly that you are watching puppets. When you remember you wonder how they did it in those days before CGI. The blu-ray is very good and I thought it was an upgrade from a previous edition. But when I compare the two, I was amazed to find that they were exactly the same, so if you're hoping for an upgrade there, you won't need it if you have the earlier blu. However, the 4KUHD edition may be much better. I personally don't like 4K's exaggerations of color and don't intend to spend thousands more on that equipment, but I would spring for a 3D it they were inclined to do that. The reason for buying this edition is the lovely book with the blu-ray attached and the extras. The features were upgraded and there were many comments from Henson's children and puppeteers that are still around, ones who were in many of the Jim Henson productions and I especially like seeing the woman who played Kira. If you are a fan of this movie, this is a must have. If you have never seen it, you have a real treat in store. And my granddaughter has a birthday coming up.

I had this on VHS at one time then I bought it on DVD years ago. I upgrade it to the blu-ray to have better picture and sound. This is my childhood favorite film. I love the characters specially gelflings, skeksis, the mystics, Aughra, Gartham, and many creatures. The storyline is between Skeksis and the Mystics. Jen's master told him to heal the dark crystal but you haven't seen it yet I won't tell you. I like Chamberlain he's very interesting. I recommend this film if you'll like Jim Henson's work.

This is probably the best update to 4K I’ve seen yet. The movie is honestly so much better from the disk. The digital version that you get with this seems to be about the equivalent of the old Blu-ray version...which was basically the original just ever so slightly cleaned up. This far exceeded my expectations. Some of the shots retain the grain or haze of the original shots, and are not over processed. The dark scenes, and dark areas of each shot, look amazing in HDR. If you were a fan of the original as a kid (like me) you will love it. My young kids actually got really into the movie...even though it’s maybe a bit “grown up” for them.
