Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel has opened up about nudity in her roles following her performance on Game of Thrones. Emmanuel starred as Missandei on the HBO series, which featured a high amount of nudity in its eight-season run. On a recent episode of the “Make It Reign with Josh Smith” podcast, the actress opened up about the nude scenes have affected her acting career.
“When I did Game of Thrones, I agreed toward certain nude scenes or nudity within the show,” Emmanuel said. “And the perception from other projects, when the role required nudity, that I was just open to do anything because I did it on that one show.”
Emmanuel joined Game of Thrones in its third season as a recurring cast member, eventually jumping to series regular and continuing on with show until the end. She starred as Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) trusted advisor, and shared a romance with Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson).
“I’ve had people challenge me and be like, ‘But this part requires that,'” the actress continued, “and I said, ‘That’s fine if you require that in the part; I don’t feel comfortable doing that level of nudity. I will do this amount, you know, I can do this, which I think is necessary for the part.'”
The actress went on to say that if anyone insists a scene needs full nudity, she has a response ready. “Well, thank you very much,” Emmanuel will say. “I appreciate your interest but that’s just not what I feel is necessary for this part and it’s a difference of opinion and creative differences and that’s fine.”
But even though she has a prepared rejection to nude scenes, Emmanuel also noted that “nine times out of 10, people are much more solutions-based and want to come to a compromise.”
After her role on Game of Thrones, Emmanuel went on to work on Mindy Kaling’s Four Weddings and a Funeral mini-series on Hulu and took on a voice role in Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. While she was starring on Game of Thrones, the actress joined the Fast and Furious franchise with the release of Furious 7, continuing to star in The Fate of the Furious and the upcoming F9. Emmanuel has also signed on to star in Army of Thieves, Zack Snyder’s prequel to his Netflix film Army of the Dead.
