Mary Smith decides after a lifetime of being a shut-in to do something wild while her father is out campaigning for the presidency, so she takes off for the family's home in West Palm Beach and inadvertently becomes romantically entangled with earnest cowboy Stretch Willoughby. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK THIS IS THE MOST WHOLESOME FUN AND CUTE MOVIE IVE EVER SEEN how is this even real. Everything about it the way he went YIPPE after she kissed him and the mime house and daddy longlegs and merle oberon is so pretty too and woawoaowoaaawoah woah woah (i am so easily pleased i know but shut up i love this movie)
This is the perfect “I woke up way too early on a Sunday and don’t feel like getting up yet” movie. Absolutely delightful in every way. Merle Oberon and Gary Cooper are sizzling together, with Oberon lending exceptional comedy and Cooper excelling in playing what is a borderline parody of the archetype for which he is best known.
And that whole night time scene on the boat - the Production Code sucked but the way filmmakers adapted to still make some very… shall we say romantic… scenes is a thing of beauty. I am still thinking (read: swooning) about it.

According to the opening credits, Leo McCarey is half responsible for the original story. More importantly, Merle Oberon has never been so cute. She’s usually so regal as to be unapproachable.
I thought this was going to be a western with a love story, but it’s a romantic comedy with a rodeo in town. It’s like screwball, but at an easy, western pace. Or now that I think about it, ROMAN HOLIDAY with cowboys.
There’s a bit of overload of “none of this would be happening if you just explained yourself!!” But that’s been happening in comedies for decades, and we can forgive it easier in 1938.
NOTE: Iron Eyes Cody is in this?! I didn’t realize his con ran back that far. This is 1938, and he was still pulling his stunt in Ernest movies.

This classic American romantic comedy from acclaimed director H.C. Potter tells the story of a young socialite posing as her own maid, who falls for a rodeo rider, who is unaware of her true identity.
The great pairing of Cooper and Oberon flourish in their roles, who are aided by an able supporting cast of Kolker and Brenann. The real standout however is Davenport who brings genuine eccentricity to his role as the wise and likeable Uncle Hannibal. Likewise the soundtrack is also brilliant, with Alfred Newman (most notable for composing the 20th Century Pictures logo theme) receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score, but ultimately missing out to Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score in The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Watching Gary Cooper never feels like a complete waste, but this came dangerously close to it. I liked Prof Hannibal doing the jitterbug. Needed more Prof Hannibal.
