Heart-warming, heart wrenching

This is an emotional story about human love in a rural American setting. As such it will probably bring tears to your eyes. I know it did to mine. The script by Jayce Bartok and the direction by Mary Stuart Masterson are carefully composed to create a celebration of love that defies convention.

BEWARE SPOILERS

Georgia (Kristen Stewart) is a 15-year-old girl suffering from Friedreich's ataxia. When her to-be lover, cafeteria worker Beagle (Aaron Stanford), asks if she is going to get better, Georgia says, “No, this is pretty much as good as it's gonna get until my heart gives out.” She has invited him into her bedroom to help her with her homework. At one point she says, “You can kiss me if you want to.” Stewart plays the part with limbs all askew and dangling almost helplessly. Yet her face is so, so pretty and healthy looking that the contrast is striking. The next day they go to a motel. She is determined to experience love before she dies. The idea is so touching.

Also sure to pull your heart strings is the older and mostly secret love affair between Easy Kimbrough (Bruce Dern) and Marg Kaminski (Elizabeth Ashley). Bittersweet is Guy Kimbrough’s (Jayce Bartok) realization that his girlfriend Stephanie (Miriam Shor) has married and started a family in his absence.

All of this could easily go from pathos to bathos to the maudlin except for the careful direction by Masterson and the fine acting all around.

What I have been trying to figure out is why the movie is entitled “The Cake Eaters.” What came to mind was Marie Antoinette’s infamous, “Let them eat cake,” but I couldn’t see the connection.

I cannot recommend this movie.

I don't understand the title of this movie. No one in the entire movie ever ate any cake. We never even saw any cake.

The title does not make sense, and the Amazon description is false.

Kristen Stewart looked beautiful with long hair (of course, a wig), and when her character of Georgia cut her hair super-short, it looked terrible.

This movie was boring and slow. The movie was all over the place. There was the main plot, about Georgia. There were a few very small sub-plots. This didn't even feel like even a TV movie, it felt like a play-on-film. The ending was abrupt, leaving the feeling of, "That's all? That's the end?"

The Amazon description is not correct - - this is absolutely not a story of first love, or falling in love, or a "celebration" of love. It is a story of an ill and disabled 15 year old who wants to lose her virginity because she is afraid that she will die before she gets the chance. She throws herself at the first "boy" - - a 20-something loser named Beagle - - who looks at her. She asks him to come to her house within a few minutes of meeting him, and he actually asks why. She asks him up to her bedroom to "study" and within a few minutes, she grabs him and kisses him, and they make out on her bed until her mother yells from downstairs that it is getting late. She makes a plan with him for a "date" the next day. He picks her up for their "date" on his motorcycle, and when he asks her where they are going, she tells him to take her to a motel. They check into the motel, and she immediately starts undressing and tells him to take a shower. She comments on how he obviously never works out, and it is clear that she is disappointed with his looks and is not attracted to him. He asks her if, instead of sex, they can just watch TV and talk, and she says no and says that she will just leave the motel if he won't have sex with her. So, he walks out, leaving her alone in the motel, and then he shortly returns, and they just have sex. They fall asleep. They wake up in the morning, and they get on his motorcycle, and he takes her to school. There is no goodbye kiss. Would anyone call this love?????

There is a sub-plot about Georgia's grandmother and Beagle's father (whose wife recently died), who have been having a secret affair for many years, and he asks her to marry him (without any ring), and she never answers.

There is a sub-plot about Beagle's brother, who is a failing musician, who has been gone and out-of-touch from everyone for three years, and shows up out of nowhere to find out that his mother has died and he didn't even know. He goes to see his girlfriend whom he has had no contact with for those three years, whom he had proposed to just before he left town and then left her without even saying goodbye, and she is shown with a little girl whom we can assume is his child which he never knew about.

There are sub-plots about the butcher business where a cow is slaughtered, and Georgia's mother's art business.

My reviews usually don't summarize a movie, but there is nothing else to say because nothing else happens and there is nothing else to talk about. The actors did a very good job with what they had to work with. I did not see any comedy here… there was some drama, but nothing to tear up over... and a lot of unhappy characters without hope who seemed to be just surviving rather than living their lives.

Watching As A Chronically Ill & Disabled Teen

As a teen who suffers from many chronic illness' that keep me in a wheelchair, as soon as I read that this movie was about chronic illness, I instantly clicked on it. There were a few things that I found were pretty inaccurate or just like that I didn't agree with. Georgia clearly needed a wheelchair and I find that most kids/teens with chronic illness gladly welcome things into their life that will make things easier for them. I remember being stubborn about my wheelchair when my pain first got bad and it got to the point where now I can't walk more than a mile at a time max. I love Kristen Stewart so much and I miss her staring in movies so this really fueled my love for her today! I think that she did very well at portraying the issues that some of us have to face, like dying young and wanting to do things before that happens. I also think that this movie illustrates the love from an able bodied person to a disabled person to show that this does in fact happen. I most of the time feel like no one is ever going to fall in love with me and be with me purely because I am medically (&emotionally) high maintenance. It was really beautiful and exciting to see that kind of mixed bodied relationship in a movie like I never have before. Now I did say all these nice things, however I feel like the plot didn't really go anywhere and that it wasn't exciting enough to every watch it again. Would I recommend to everyone? no. Would I recommend to my disabled friends? Yes!!

Naja, also meiner Meinung nach ist der Film nicht grade erste Klasse.

An Kristen Stewart habe ich nichts auszusetzen, sie spielt die Rolle eines muskelkranken Mädchens wirklich überzeugend.

Allerdings finde ich die Handlung im Film etwas lahm. Es dauert eine Weile, bis der Film in Fahrt kommt und etwas passiert, doch wo bleibt der Sinn? Ich wurde ehrlich gesagt vom Ende des Filmes überrascht. Ich habe als noch darauf gewartet, dass sie sich doch in ihn verliebt.

Um so mehr ich darüber nachdenke, fange ich allerdings an, mich mit dem Film auseinander zu setzen.

Es gibt hier mehrere interessante Dinge zu beachten. Hat sie sich nun letztendlich doch in ihn verliebt? Denn sie sagt ihm am ende sehr klar, dass sie etwas besonderes möchte - ihn!

Ihre Mutter finde ich auch sehr interessant und absolut klischeehaft. Auch wenn man vielleicht in erster Linie auf Georgias Seite ist, umso mehr ich versuche mich in die Lage ihrer Mutter zu setzen, desdo mehr Verständnis kann ich für sie aufbringen. Sie hat eine behinderte Tochter, die sie behütet und der sie quasi ihr ganzes Leben gewidmet hat. Als sie dann merkt, dass diese anfängt auf eigenen Beinen zu stehen, fällt es ihr schwer, loszulassen, während Georgias Vater mir schon besser gefällt. Auch er spielt ein Klischee. Er hat Verständnis für seine Tochter und gleichermaßen kann er die Sorge seiner Frau verstehen. Schade finde ich, dass er sehr wenig in den Vordergrund kommt. Das hätte ich mir gewünscht!

im Großen und Ganzen gibt es einen Stern abzug für das abrubte ende. irgendwas hat mir gefehlt, auch wenn ich nicht genau sagen kann was. und der stern abzug gilt auch für teilweise doch sehr aufgesetzte szenen.

da soll Guy Bier für sich, seinen Bruder und seinen Vater aus dem Kühlschrank holen und da stehen doch einfach haargenau drei bier rum... naja... fand ich etwas gestellt... aber sonst ;) alles gut!

Trotz einer beeindruckenden Schauspielleistung von Kristen Stewart ist dieser Film leider weitgehend unbekannt geblieben, sozusagen ein Geheimtipp.

Ort der Handlung ist das ländliche Amerika. Erzählt werden die persönlichen Verstrickungen, die zwei Familien durchziehen. Das Ganze kommt in der Form eines Kammerspiels mit einer Handvoll Akteuren aus.

Im Mittelpunkt steht Georgia (Kristen Stewart), ein hübsches, intelligentes Mädchen im Teenageralter, das an einer tödlichen Nervenkrankheit leidet. Sie lebt mit ihrer Kunst-affinen Mutter und deren Freund und wird von der exzentrischen Granny umsorgt.

Dwight, genannt Beagle, weil er zu Tieren einen besseren Draht als zu Menschen hat, ist der Sohn des lokalen Metzgers (welch Ironie!). Der Metzger wiederum hegt starke Gefühle für Georgias Großmutter, aber das führt in eine Nebenhandlung.

Zentral ist, dass Georgia den sexuell unerfahrenen Beagle dazu auserkoren hat, sie zur Frau zu machen. Sie hat Angst, dass ihr die Zeit davonläuft und möchte das Gefühl körperlicher Liebe unbedingt noch kennenlernen.

Georgia und Beagle sind ein rührendes, ein durch und durch unschuldiges Paar. Die sympathischen Misfits per se.

Der Titel „Cake Eaters“ bezieht sich auf einen Ausdruck aus Pennsylvania, der Menschen beschreibt, die beste Voraussetzungen haben, es im Leben weit zu bringen – also das Gegenteil der Protagonisten. Oder etwa nicht? Haben Georgia und Beagle nicht mehr erreicht als viele andere?

Das Drehbuch stammt von Jayce Bartok. Regie führte Mary Stuart Masterson. Kristen Stewart brilliert im Zentrum des Geschehens. Die Handschrift von Frauen ist bei diesem sensiblen Streifen deutlich erkennbar.

Ich habe den Film nur wegen Kristen Steward angesehen weil ich normalerweisse keine Dramen mag, weil ich eher der tüp mensch bin der die Harte ganghart mag also Action Horror Thriller und sowas halt. Deshalb war ich sehr Überrascht das mir der Film nur gut fand, sondern das er mich so bewegt hat das er sich zu einem mein Faforites zällen darf. Zum einen ist da die Berürende Geschichte der 15 Järhigen Georgia die an Friedreich Ataxie Leidet einer Neuro Muskulären Störung die bei ihr schon zu Bewegungs und Sprachstörungen führt die sich nach und nach verschlimmern werden und die Früher oder Später dazu füren wird das ihr Herz Versagen wird. Und um den 20 Järigen Beagle der der bei seinem Vater Lebt und seinem Bruder einem Gescheitertem Musiker der zurückert nach dem ihre Mutter gestorben ist. Und um die begegnund der beiden die nach und nach zu Liebe wird. Die Story lässt sich zeit und nimmt nur Lagsam etwas fahrt auf aber das ist auch gut so. Denn es wird viel wert auf tiefgang und stimmigkeit gelegt, jedem Charackter wird die zeit gegeben sich zu entfalten. Neben der sehr Bewegenden Story ist es aber die Grandiose Cast die alle Ihre figur die Nötige tiefe vereihen konnte. Die Musik ist ebenfals sehr gut und verpsst jeder situation den tichtigen Toutch. Aber das beste ist die Megastarke Kristen Steward die es schafft Goergia so viel Herz und Stärke zu verleien die ich in ihrer situation wahrscheinlich nicht aufbringen würde, Aber noch beindruckender ist wie sie es schafft die Krankheit so Echt und Real wirken zu lassen als wurde sie wirklich daran Leiden. Wer auf der suche nach einem Sehr Guten film ist und solche Seichten aber Tiefgründigen Dramen mag wird ein Hinnreissenden Film sehen.

Ich bin über Kirsten Stewart auf diesen Film aufmerksam geworden, da mich nach Willkommen bei den Rileys, Adventureland, Im Land der Frauen und The Runaways interessiert hat was sie noch so gemacht hat außer Twilight.
In der Beschreibung steht das sie an einer neuro Muskulären Krankheit leidet, das hat mich sehr interessiert, da ich selber an einer erkrankt bin.
Als sich dann im Film raus stellte das ihre Rolle an der selben Friedreich Ataxie leidet wie ich, war ich sehr erstaunt.
1. Da es doch eine eher seltene Form der Ataxie ist.
2. Da dies Form eher in Europäischen Gefilden zu finden ist.
3. Das diese Krankheit in keiner Beschreibung namentlich erwähnt wird, obwohl durch den Film deutlich wird das man gerne auf diese spezielle Krankheit aufmerksam machen will.
Der Film ist sehr behutsam aufgebaut und wie auch zu erwarten sehr Anthropologisch aufgebaut da Mary Stuart Masterson Regie führte und auch als Produzentin tätig war.
Hervorzuheben ist die Oscar reife Darstellung von K. Stewart die ihre Rolle so glaubhaft spielt, das man glauben könnte sie hätte diese Krankheit wirklich.
Die gespielten Einzelheiten dieser Krankheit sind so fein ausgearbeitet das irgend eine Person für das Drehbuch tief in sich gegangen sein muss um seine Erfahrungen zu schildern.
Durch sein plötzliches Ende regt der Film nochmal zum Nachdenken an.
The Cake eaters ist kein Film der seine Zuschauer an die Hand nimmt und ihm alles auf einem Silber Tablett präsentiert, man muss Nachdenken und analysieren.
Es bleibt keine Frage offen wenn man alles hinterfragt.
Ein sehr anspruchsvoller Film der einzig und alleine im Schnitt einige Schwachstellen hat.
Wenn man sich die Deleted Scenes auf der Blu ray anguckt fragt man sich warum die nicht drin sind, sie würden den Film jedenfalls verdaulicher machen, wenn auch in seinem Spektrum begrenzen.

Die Entdeckung der Langsamkeit ...

Am Anfang sieht man in einen Super8-Film zwei Jungs in Halloween-Kostümen mit ihrer Mutter im Garten. Dann werden nach und nach alle Darsteller des Films vorgestellt. Es dauert eine Weile, bis Zusammenhänge deutlich werden. Also habt etwas Geduld mit dem Film. Er nimmt sich Zeit. Und das sollte der Zuschauer auch. Es lohnt sich.

Die Personen sind trotz all ihren Macken sympathisch. Es mach Spaß, ihnen zuzuschauen, wie sie ihr Leben angehen. Wie eine Familie, Vater mit zwei Söhne, sich wieder aufeinander zubewegen. Wie drei Generationen von Frauen versuchen, miteinander klar zu kommen. Es muss nicht immer alles dick aufgetragen werden, um den Zuschauer bei Laune zu halten (na ja, vielleicht für den mit der 1 Stern-Bewertung :-). Es sind die Kleinigkeiten, die man dann wahrnehmen kann: Z. B. wozu der der Expander auf dem Motorroller dient. Klingt hier rätselhaft, ist aber zauberhaft, wenn man die Szene sieht.

Der Sountrack ist toll und passt hervorragend zu den Bildern und Stimmungen.

Bild und Ton
Die Bluray hat größtenteils ein sehr scharfes Bild, am dem keiner geschmäcklerisch herumgebastelt hat (Körnung, Farbstich u.a.).
Der Ton im deutschen bildet unglaublich die Räumlichkeiten ab und die Synchronisation ist Referenzklasse! Sonst sehe ich die Filme immer im Original, um diese Vorzüge zu genießen. Hier kann man das auch im Deutschen.

Fazit
Ein ruhiger, wunderschöner Film. Meine 5 Sterne hat er.
