Art Blakey was one of the greatest of all jazz drummers, a masterful talent scout and the inspiring leader of the Jazz Messengers. For 35 years (1955-90), the Jazz Messengers featured brilliant young talent who were pushed by Blakey to write new music and play at their very best. Few lineups could compete with the 1960 edition of the Jazz Messengers featured on the album "The Big Beat". Blakey, the "old man" of the band at 30, is joined by bassist Jymie Merritt and three brilliant stylists who were not only exciting soloists but very skilled songwriters: trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Bobby Timmons. The Big Beat introduces Timmons' "Dat Dere" (which practically defines soul jazz) and Shorter's "Lester Left Town" (a tribute to Lester Young) and includes an inventive version of "It's Only A Paper Moon" along with a few other lesser-known but colorful pieces. This is hard bop at it's finest from one of the most immortal jazz groups of all time. The definitive versions of Blue Note are on XRCD24 - the optimization of CD mastering and manufacturing. Plays on all standard CD players.

I'm a big fun of Blakey's Jazz Messengers, so the test, this time, was about the sound of this XRCD24 (my first).
The sound is simply outstanging: very transparent, a very clear sense of depth, great ambience, a powerful and definite bass, pace and rythim. I have two high resolution cd's and a pair of SACD's, and this one goes beyond in almost every aspect of recording. And with one very important plus: it don't need a special chip on my cd player to play it.
Highly recomendable.

A couple of notes up front. This LP is in stereo and the pressing is excellent. Flat and very quite. There is no information as to the source of the original music. Not "re mastered from the original analogue tapes" as the best of the recent Blue Note recording are, but a very good sounding disc all the same. I have deducted 1 Star for lack of information, missing the original liner notes, and sound quality that is only slightly less bright than a Blue Note original. If you are adding to an already extensive collection of Jazz Messenger LPs, than this disc is well worth having. If you are just starting to discover Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, I would suggest you first buy a copy of the recent release under the Blue Note "Tone Poets" packaging called "Witch Doctor". Also pick up a copy of the LP called "Mosaic". These two LPs will give you a much better listening experience and understanding of the Jazz Messengers' brilliance.

At £7.50 i wasn't expecting much but this is a great pressing on 180g from Not Now. The reviews i'd read said that it wasn't up there in Art & The Messengers discography but I disagree it's a fantastic album. Love the sound of Art's drums and his solo on The Chess Players. All the compositions by Shorter and Timmons are excellent and Lee Morgan is as usual outstanding. There's a great cover of Only a Paper Moon which Lee & Wayne make their own and I highly recommended this LP

●最後に音質について。本作は現在はほとんど使われなくなってきているxrcdですが、かなり良いのではないでしょうか。最近あるような耳へのアタック感が強いリマスターよりも、もう少し柔らかく、上品な音です。ブレイキーのドラムも広がりがあって美しく聞こえます。

●ということで、中古でもそこそこお手頃なお値段の時にゲットしておくと良いでしょう。オススメ♪
