Some years have bigger blockbuster releases than others, 2018 was one of those years. It saw the release of Creed II, where Adonis went toe to toe with Drago's son. and was able to avenge the death of his father from all the back in Rocky IV. Sony released two Spider-Man universe films and John Krasinski showed off his horror film directing chops with A Quiet Place.

The action genre itself is not hard to define, the description is in the word. Some action movies, however, such as the ones listed below, cover multiple genres including action mixed with fantasy, science fiction, drama, and thriller. The films on this list not only dominated the box office but also won over audiences and critics alike, proving to be the best action films for 2018.

Looking back at 2018, there was an abundance of great films released. Based on the user ratings over at IMDb, these are the ten best action movies of 2018. Have you seen them all?

Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado (7.1)

The first film, starring Emily Blunt, was critically acclaimed upon its release in 2015, being named one of the best films of that year. The sequel, whilst well-received enough to make this list, did not garner as much praise.

Emily Blunt is noticeably absent in the film, however, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro reteam to combat Mexican drug cartels trafficking suicide bombers across the U.S and Mexico border.

Prior to the film’s release, a third film was announced to be in development but no following updates have been mentioned.

Ant-Man and the Wasp (7.1)

Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang is still under house arrest for his part in violating the Sokovia Accords, when he is kidnapped by Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne. After the father and daughter open a tunnel to the quantum realm, they begin to believe that Hope’s mother might still be trapped inside. Turning to Scott, due to having successfully survived entering the quantum realm in the previous film, the team attempt a rescue mission.

Michelle Pfeiffer joins the series as Janet van Dyne, Hank Pym’s wife, and the original Wasp. Director Peyton Reed has signed onto a third film with a tentative filming date set for January 2021.

Black Panther (7.3)

The next MCU film on the list was directed by Ryan Coogler, known for Fruitvale Station and Creed. Coogler brings in regular collaborator, Michael B. Jordan, who stars as the film’s villain, Killmonger.

Black Panther follows T’Challa, the king of the highly advanced African nation of Wakanda, previously introduced in Civil War. T’Challa has enhanced strength due to injecting the heart-shaped herb becoming the Black Panther.

The film was a massive success at the box office, making $1.347 billion against its $200 million budget and becoming the first Marvel film to win an Academy Award. A sequel is confirmed for May 2022 with Ryan Coogler returning to direct as well as taking on writing duties.

Upgrade (7.5)

This cyberpunk body horror action film was made on a budget of only $3 million. but ended up making $17 million at the box office and received a good critical reception.

After finding himself paralyzed, technophobe Grey Trace (played by Logan Marshall-Green) accepts a STEM implant with the belief it will help him to walk again. The implant begins to communicate with Grey and helps him hunt down one of the men who killed his wife and left him unable to walk. Giving STEM complete control of his body, Grey kills the man and begins to hunt down the rest of his attackers.

The film was directed by Leigh Whannell, who most people would recognize due to his recent success with The Invisible Man. The story has been described as a mixture of The Six Million Dollar Man with elements of Death Wish and other revenge fantasy films.

Ready Player One (7.5)

Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster, based on the 2011 Science Fiction novel by Ernest Cline, takes audiences to the dystopian future of 2045, where people spend most of their time inside a virtual reality video game called the Oasis.

When the creator of the Oasis, James Halliday dies, he leaves a pre-recorded message revealing a hidden Easter egg within the game. Whoever finds the Easter egg will inherit ownership of the Oasis and all of Mr. Halliday’s fortune. The film follows orphaned teenager Wade Watts, who, along with his friends, competes against an organization wanting to control the Oasis and flood it with advertisements.

The film was praised for its nonstop action and pop culture references but was criticized for its lack of depth.

The Incredibles 2 (7.6)

It was 14 years in the making but Pixar finally released a sequel to 2004’s The Incredibles. The sequel picks up exactly where the original left off, with the Parr family going up against the Underminer. Soon after, a wealthy businessman and his sister offer the hero’s a chance to restore their image by filming them successfully fighting crime.

The movie gives a larger role to Holly Hunter’s Elastigirl, who leads the story, whilst Mr. Incredible takes on the Mr. Mom role. Proving that it was worth the wait, the film did not disappoint audiences and made over a billion dollars at the box office.

Deadpool 2 (7.7)

After the success of 2016’s Deadpool, the sequel had big shoes to fill and, in the end, it delivered. After failing to kill one of his targets, Wade Wilson’s girlfriend Vanessa is inadvertently murdered by the target. Following a series of unsuccessful suicide attempts, Wilson forms the X-force in an effort to protect a young mutant from a time-traveling soldier named Cable.

Deadpool 2 was directed by David Leitch, replacing Tim Miller after creative differences with Ryan Reynolds. With almost double the budget of the first film, this sequel wasn’t quite as successful but still did very well, bringing in $785 million on a $110 million budget.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (7.8)

The franchise that never seems to show signs of slowing down. The sixth entry in the Tom Cruise led Mission: Impossible saga is a direct sequel to its predecessor, set two years after Solomon Lane’s capture. In this chapter, the IMF attempts to stop a simultaneous nuclear attack on multiple cities.

Jeremy Renner was unable to reprise his role as William Brandt due to scheduling conflicts with Avengers: Endgame but the rest of the cast returned, including Alec Baldwin as the new secretary of the IMF.

Most people should be familiar with Henry Cavill's mustache in the film as the reason he couldn’t shave for the Justice League reboot, which resulted in the awful CGI job on his face. The film was a huge success, making $791.1 million at the box office, surpassing Rogue Nations $682.7 million.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (8.4)

The first non-MCU Spider-Man film since 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, saw fan-favorite Miles Morales step into the main character role. After being bitten by a radioactive spider, the teen finds himself developing spider-like abilities.

In this world, it’s revealed that there is an infinite number of alternate universes where different versions of Spider-Man exist including multiple versions of Peter Parker and a universe where Gwen Stacey is a superhero known as Spider-Gwen.

The film was widely well-received, and a sequel is now in development with a 2022 release date. A spin-off film called Spider-Women is also being planned.

Avengers: Infinity War (8.5)

It’s no surprise that the highest-grossing film of 2018 is also the highest-rated on IMDb. Avengers: Infinity War was the beginning of the end for some of our beloved Marvel characters and the culmination of 10 years’ worth of films. This was the biggest roster of superheroes in a Marvel film to date and included the addition of the Guardians of Galaxy, who gave Thor a brand new eye after he lost his in Thor: Ragnarok.

Infinity War left audiences shocked, uncertain and upset at witnessing many of their favorite heroes perishing at the hands of Thanos. The massive scale film set the stage for the conclusion of the epic storyline in the following years, Avengers: Endgame.
