On this day in Texas History, March 24, 1829: Future Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín is born in what is now Goliad, Texas. On May 5th 1862 he would lead the Mexican Army to victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla. This event is still celebrated as Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo is primarily celebrated in Puebla, the birthplace of the holiday. In most other parts of Mexico, it's a national holiday similar to President's Day. Some children don't go to school on Cinco de Mayo, but for most people it's a normal work day.
