Limerick group buys Terry Wogan portrait in aid of charities

A GROUP representing past pupils of a Limerick school has bought a portrait of one of the county’s most well known faces, with the proceeds of the purchase going to charity.

Crescent Past Pupils Union (CPPU) purchased the portrait of Terry Wogan, one of the biggest stars to grace our television screens and radio airwaves, by local artist Barbara Hartigan to present to the school.

Last year, acclaimed Limerick artist Barbara Hartigan announced that she would donate the proceeds of her life’s work to a good cause.

Ms Hartigan, who resides in Castleconnell, has compiled some 70 signed portraits of well-known faces.

They include Mr Wogan, Mother Teresa, Dolly Parton, Bill Clinton, Lionel Richie, Kris Kristofferson, Marcel Marceau and Jimmy Carr to name but a few.

The CPPU agreed to purchase the portrait of Crescent Mr Wogan, who was once a pupil of Crescent College Comprehensive SJ himself.

The portrait is signed by both the artist Ms Hartigan and Mr Wogan.

€500 was donated to the Samaritans in Limerick and €500 to the school Pyjamas Appeal in support of the Jesuit Refugee Service.

“The donation to the Samaritans was made in memory of our former school French and History teacher Carmel O’Farrell who passed away in April last year,” a CPPU spokesperson said.

Dermot Maher, president of CPPU thanked Barbara Hartigan for her generous act in donating the fee to our nominated charities and to Peter Doyle for suggesting the purchase of the painting for the school.
