      What to know

      Critics Consensus

Takers boasts some gripping set pieces and keeps things moving quickly, but its two-dimensional characters, clichéd script, and brazenly derivative plot make it hard to recommend. Read critic reviews

Gordon Jennings (Idris Elba) and his friends enjoy a luxurious lifestyle funded by bank robberies, and they avoid capture by sticking to a strict set of rules. As they celebrate the latest job, a former associate arrives with a daring plan to rob an armored car. The lure of so much cash is too tempting to resist but, unbeknown to Gordon's men, this heist puts them on a collision course with Russian mobsters and a detective (Matt Dillon) who will do anything to capture them.

I've seen about a squillion movies (yes, that's because I'm old), and this was one of the better ones of this genre. As heist movies go this was better than Heat & the updated Italian Job. Probably not as good as The Sting or, even, Ocean's 11, but hey; few will be. I would place it on par with Ronin, I think. You just had to get used to seeing the African American actors in the leading roles opposite Matt Dillon. Since I'm of that demographic, it wasn't too hard for me. I didn't even mind the shaky camera work, Chris Brown, or T.I.'s acting that much. It was novel to see two fly brothers get such big roles. I thought they did rather well. Did you ever see Keanu Reeves in anything? T.I. & Brown were better that Keanu hands down. And who knew Chris Brown could run a parkour route? He carried that off rather well, I thought. Even young Vader did a good job. This flick is pretty much a pastiche of other heist movies, but lets face it; if you're going to rip off other people's work then at least do a decent job, right? Mission accomplished. I hope Idris Elba and Paul Walker do a sequel. Elba and Walker worked well together and Elba has true leading man charisma. Certainly more than Keanu, Tom Cruise, Michael Madsen, or Sylvester Stallone; all of whom still get leading roles for some reason. 4 Stars 3-22-14

Bland, lame, and predictable to the end. The ending is abrupt and retarded, and all the subplots are stupid and unnecessary. The characters are completely one-dimensional and unlikable, but the writers try halfassedly to make the audience like them. I don't know I should give them credit for trying or berate them for doing such an awful job. I'm going to settle for the latter. This movie doesn't suck but it's far from good. It spends too much time doing an awful job of setting up the characters, to the point where there's almost no actual stealing in a movie called "Takers." Kind of stupid, huh? Yeah this movie is pretty dumb.

Considering that its "all-star" cast is helmed by the likes of Paul Walker, Chris Brown, T.I. and Hayden Christensen, I think it's safe to say that "Takers" isn't quite as terrible as it could (and should) have been. This is not me defending it but rather pointing out that things could have been much, much worse. Personally, I think "Takers" is slick-looking and exciting in some areas, but it ultimately plays out like a cheap, made-for-BET version of "Heat" minus the elements that made that film as good as it is. The characters are one-dimensional bores, the editing is choppier and more incomprehensible than a Michael Bay film, the acting is (unsurprisingly) weak from all cast members and there's the obligatory "explosion followed by a group of guys walking away from it in slow-motion" scene. Yeah, it's that kind of movie.

Takers is an unoriginal, chaotic, senseless mayhem of cops chasing robbers offering little new perspective to the crime-action genre. Laughable, embarrassing storyline conveying all sorts of wrong messages.
