Our experience completely supports the other positive recent reviews of this extraordinary restaurant. We are open minded and interested in different foods, but also have allergies that were especially well accommodated. (You do need to make allergies clear when reserving - another essential is reserving...your table well in advance). Credit cards are accepted so you do not need to pay with cash. The value of this experience is excellent. We paid about €40 per person, including delicious wine. (And we didn't need to eat the following day! :)) Our small family birthday feast included no fewer than 21 different dishes on our table; some expected, some totally unexpected, but all delicious! The ambience of this small family-run restaurant is wonderful. João is charming and an exceptional host, and the service is professional and efficient. Be hungry for your dinner, eat judiciously, and enjoy every dish!More

We went to dinner here at the suggestion of our hotel. It can be tricky to findso plan to get lost a little bit. It's a small restaurant with about 12 tables. The atmosphere feels right for a walled medieval town: quaint with arches and...exposed brick. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Service was friendly and excellent. Everyone speaks English perfectly. There is no menu, dishes are brought to the table I counted over 20 different items and all were delicious. Servings are ample too. This is typical Portuguese cooking for this region. It certainly felt authentic. The main dishes are going to feature pork and beef. There are no substitutions or other options ,but honestly you wouldn't want to. Here it's the tasting menu that makes it so good.More

This tiny, well hidden restaurant in the heart of the old moorish quarter was fully booked for both lunch and dinner on the Friday that we ate there, and they turned away enough people to fill it twice over. Currently staffed by the third generation...of this family to own and run it, everyone gets the same food. But what food! Prepared with love and served with pride. You'll certainly get some things to eat that you haven't eaten before. We enjoyed a range of 10 small starters, a meat main with two sorts of veg and a trio of desserts. Wines were selected to accompany each course. We paid what seemed a ridiculously low price for what we had, but were told that, in Evora terms, they were expensive.More

We come from Montreal, Canada and are spoiled with good food so for me to write this review is huge. What an unforgettable evening we had at this quaint out of the way restaurant located on a small street or laneway depending on where you...come from in the world. You MUST make a reservation in advance if you want to experience this culinary adventure, no menu, the food and wine is chosen by the chef and brought out to your table until you are full, including desserts. This is the next generation of a traditional family restaurant and by the end of the meal you will feel like part of the family. I you plan on visiting Evora, do not miss this experience and say hello to Joao and his family from Dan & Catherine from Montreal!More

We were incredibly lucky to score a last minute reservation at the restaurant. It was a perfect coda to our trip and an unforgettable experience. Chef Joao not only serves a meal highlighting the best Portugal has to offer in food and wine (no set...menu, every dish is a delightful surprise) but makes you feel right at home. Be prepared to have a long and very enjoyable feast: we lost count of starters, there were 2 main courses (meat lovers rejoice!) followed by several desserts. Fantastic food, fantastic owners, authentic Portuguese hospitality - we can’t recommend this restaurant enough! Advance reservations are a must.More

My husband and I stopped in Evora for lunch as we drove from Algarves to Duoro. We read about this restaurant in our Rick Steves Portugal travel book. We had no reservation but we lucked out and got the last table. We loved everything about...the experience, the warm welcome, not knowing what dish was coming next and the chats with the chef and his wonderful staff. Every course that was served was outstanding and memorable and so was the wine that chef recommended. It is honestly the best meal we have had so far in Portugal after being here 10 days and we keep talking about it and keep hoping we will find another one which can compare. Headed to Porto now, fingers crossed we find another great place. We highly recommend this very special restaurant.More

We were simply blown away by not just the food but the genuine hospitality of this family run restaurant. We could feel that every dish and every interaction were made with pride and care in what they do. What a lovely experience and we could...not have chosen a better place to dine. Twice within a three day visit to Evora - testament to how much we loved this place.More

We were not able to get into this restaurant for dinner so opted for a late lunch instead and it did not disappoint. Our amazing chef plied us with every kind of dish--meat, pork, lots of interesting sides, all typical Portuguese and delicious. This was...an unforgettable experience, from tasting so many different dishes to the quaint and cozy setting and the warm, wonderful people who made it an amazing day. We skipped dinner! Thank you!More

What a great time and culinary experience! A highlight of our two weeks running from north to south Portugal. We also loved Evora at Christmas time. We just happened to get a reservation on the 8th of December (I see another traveler on here was...likely someone we watched turned away that day and felt sorry for) showed up too early and were called in out of a cold rain by the owner. Warm, cozy and presented with a feast. We even went back for lunch the following day (I know a bit greedy) and watched many turned away again. But the owner heard that my wife s dream was to eat black pork in Portugal which was not on the menu for our dinner, and we were invited back! All the great reviews have said it all. The owner and his son were so personable. The food and wines selected were simple, traditional and fantastic. Come hungry. I even came back to Florida with a bottle of grandpa's wine. (a second visit surprise for the holder of the yellow plate) I'll be sending a pic when I get the courage to open it.More

I went here based on the reviews posted, was really expecting some awesome food. The reality is the staff are very attentive and friendly, the starters were very tasty although not what you would expect, the main course in my opinion lacked flavor. The desserts...were abundant but nothing remarkable. If you want a different culinary experience give it a try but don’t expect to be blown away.More

Once you sit down inside this little restaurant you know you're in for something special. It's not fancy, the staff aren't dressed up and the chef was wearing shorts. But from the very start we loved all the food. It was so nice to sit...down and not have to make any choices. Everything was incredible and the service was on point - friendly, helpful and efficient. Our wine, custom-made for the restaurant, was a perfect match. If we lived here I'd be here once a week and I expect we'd never get tired of it. If you're planning a trip to Evora, make sure you book a dinner here, and plan your trip around it if you have to.More

This restaurant’s high ranking is no fluke. It is not just that the food is so outstanding; while that is certainly where it begins, the entire dining experience is what makes this truly memorable, and on top of that, an incredible value. Our hotel host...told us in advance; be prepared to be stuffed by the time you are done. That was certainly the case, but more to the point, each course was truly remarkable. But it was the personality of the host that really stood out; he makes each and every guest in this small restaurant feel truly welcome. And all this for €20? Unbelievable. As for wine, considering doing what we did: give the host a general description, set a price point, and let him decide. We had a wonderful Alentejo red that he selected. Two important tips: you must reserve in advance to be assured a table; any number of people were turned away the night we were there on a Wednesday night in early March. And bring cash; credit cards are not accepted. Beyond that, bring an empty stomach and be prepared for a meal you are likely to remember as a standout experience on this or any vacation.More

if your idea of a great meal is french fries and if trying something outside your normal comfort zone isn't your cup of tea, this restaurant isn't for you. if on the other hand you are willing to experience local flavors and experience the kind...of old world home style meals that are simply getting harder to find anywhere, then this restaurant is for you. The experience here is kind of like going to someone's home, as you will have to trust your host. This restaurant serves everyone the meal of the day. Although we were not sure what to expect, my wife and I had a wonderful time at Taberna Tipica Quarta Feira one evening. The food was authentically Iberian: with tapas, carrot soup, pork shoulder desert and wine. It was like going back to the 1960's and experiencing my old world grand mother's cooking. Glad to see that these tradition are still around. Many places in Europe no longer do the kind of work that these meals require, opting instead to serve meals that can be prepared quickly and preserved a long time before serving. I am not into foams and molecular chemical food and I did not find that here. Its not all about the about the food. There is a certain amount of ambiance and social connections that an old world tavern is all about (as visitors to the city we get to experience this for a bit, even if it is an illusion). The area near the temple of Diana of Evora is full of old streets and buildings from different centuries. The experience of walking to and from a meal that is as timeless as the city is not to be missed. Some things have changed here. Its now a younger generation working in the restaurant, however they appear to still be serving the family recipes in the traditional and authentic manner. My hope is that they will keep doing this for as long as they can. English is spoken, as well as other languages I surmise. Don't think of coming here without a reservation. The night we were there, locals who did not have a reservation had to be turned away. Also, this is a cash only restaurant. A Saturday night came out to 40 Euros per person. Given all the food we were served, we did not find that to be unreasonable.More

You enter and you receive the food, A set of little appetizers, several main course items and a desert tray. It's a very small restaurant, but such a wonderful experience. We did not opt for the wine pairing. Instead we asked for a recommendation, which...turned out to be an excellent Portuguese wine bottled for the family who have been running this restaurant for 30 or more years.More
