Syd Barrett – Barrett

This original UK pressing is certainly a solid analog offering from EMI, and it has all the bits that a top notch mastering and pressing from 1970 should have. However, with the advantage having a few varieties of this album here to compare, I would not place this original UK version to be remarkably better than the current remasters that are 1/5th the price. The 2014 version is brighter on my systems but it is also from a digital source and some may believe that inferior by nature. There are a lot of beat up copies of this out there, so don't blow your budget on one junky piece just to hear it. You're not really missing anything that sublime and mystical.

I have to agree with everyone else. This EMI100 reissue is excellent! I have owned this since 1997 but I hadn’t played it in a while. Having recently (finally!) received my Syd box from Third Man the first thing I did was compare this with their new reissue. This is noticeably better and not just because it’s not mastered as low as the new one. Volume knob takes care of low levels in that case. This is just so much more detailed and lively; just a goddamned delight to listen to. Super quiet throughout. I’ve had this and the Madcap since they were released for the centennial and the first album is an excellent reissue but it does not shine like the Barrett does.

I've owned this since it was pressed and I can attest to what others here say. Amazing album that received some justice in 1997. Rain falls in greeeeeey far awaaaaaaaaay.........

I’ve got these 2014 pressings for Barrett and Madcap. They sound excellent. I also have a NM UK Harvest twofer, that uses original stampers. The 2014 sounds a little fuller but lacks a bit of the air and detail of the twofer. Can’t really go wrong either way and I could see how some may prefer the 2014.

Is this the version with matrix SHSP 4007 A-1G and additional AA on 90° ?

Just adding my reply as a full review so more will see it: This is from the days when EMI was pressing flawless vinyl and properly packaging it. This is top notch vinyl, presumably pressed at Hayes.

My copy has an untextured, unlaminated flipback cover with yellow/green Harvest labels, but with the EMI boxed logo on both sides A and B; it also has the 'The Gramaphone Company' rim text on both sides too. Matrix numbers are (Side A) SHSP 4007 A-1G GD 1 and (Side B) SHSP 4007 B-1G G. Maybe I should add this as another variant?

Hi, Ive been reading about the Rhino/Parlophone 2014 reissues, but i'm confused because the label on all these is Harvest, am i looking at the same reissue as Rhino, i'd like a first pressing if i can get one. maybe the one's in shops now are just as good?

Personal favourites include dominoes and baby lemonade. A must for early Floyd fans , but don't be expecting another piper.
