Product Description
Sweet Bean is about a delicious red bean paste, the sweet heart of the dorayaki pancakes that Sentaro (Masatoshi Nagase) sells from his little bakery to a small but loyal clientele. Absorbed in sad memories and distant thoughts, Sentaro cooks with skill but without enthusiasm. When seventy-six-year-old Tokue (Kirin Kiki) responds to his ad for an assistant and cheerfully offers to work for a ridiculously low wage, Sentaro is skeptical about the eccentric old lady s ability to endure the long hours. But when she shows up early one morning and reveals to him the secret to the perfect sweet bean paste, Sentaro agrees to take her on. With Tokue s new recipe, Sentaro s business begins to flourish, but Tokue is afflicted with an illness that, once revealed, drives her into isolation once again.

This should be looked into and addressed, but I'm sure will not be.
The film moves slowly along with beautiful imaging. It is like poetry in motion. Endearing and moving.

The lady director is young, but has many films in her portfolio already!
Only sad part was no interviews with the actors, in the extras.
Would've been so lovely to hear their views and interpretations in their own words.
The film portrays very ordinary Japanese people, marginalised, for one reason or another, ending up supporting each other through their wonderful, developing friendship and respect towards each other.
Beautifully told, very nicely portrayed.
The fantastic cherry blossom trees provide a special extra bit, and actually 'play' a nice, symbolic part in the story line. Well worth a watch!
This film is similar in many ways to a lovely film from Hong Kong: called the 'Simple Life' (also known as Sister Peach) a 2011 a film directed by Ann Hui.
Both films deal with old aged ladies in a delicate manner, with incredible acting. If you like 'Sweet Bean', you will very much like its Hong Kong 'cousin' - the Simple Life' as well. And while i am at it, i would draw attention to another film, as delicate as the other two: but this time from India.
It is called 'The Lunch Box' . Amazon likes to recommend films of the same style and genre, so I thought I might just do the very same.
While the HK film was a winner in the Venice Film Festival (in 2011), the one from India was a winner in Cannes, in 2013, for very good reasons.
All three films are very much worth a watch! Very, very warmly recommend them!!
