This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.

Despite its prime location and stunning lake views, Superior Shores Resort has been criticized for not providing value for its high cost. Guests have expressed disappointment with outdated amenities, the need for repairs, and the overall atmosphere that calls for modernization. While some visitors enjoy features like fire pits and find the rooms comfortable, the prevalent opinion is that the resort's rooms and decor are in need of an update. Additionally, service quality seems inconsistent, ranging from professional to inefficient.

Your beautiful restaurant has zero budget friendly options and NO BAR???? WHAT??? NO BAR!!!!! Even the nicest of the nicest has a bar, that was extremely disappointing. Our $300 dinner had over cooked ribs & for an $80 steak it was not even 1/2 inch, more like 1/4 inch. The steak was good, but not sure WHO your target audience is with this type of dining option. IMO that space is big enough to have BOTH, high end and budget friendly options. AND a BAR!!!!

The beds were uncomfortable, lighting in hallways and room could be added - couldn't see to make coffee. Additional pegs to hang towels and coats along the wall would be an improvement over tiny closet.

Superior Shores is generlaly great, but this visit was just so-so, all based on the condition of the lakehome we rented. For the cost, the room should have been way better. Dirty dishes in the kitchen cabinets, shower in one bathoom did not work which forced everyone into the master barthoom, fan in that bathoom did not work, cobwebs - large ones - in the windows, small bits of dirt and debris in the room in the corners, half the windows would not crank open. The windows got to be a big thing as the stove in the kitchen heated up so badly, and combined with the lack of air conditioning, the main living and gathering room was 80 to 85 degrees and we could just not get he air to move. Paint in the deck was peeling all over, one deck chair was broken causing people to nearly tip it over backwards, deck door did not work half the time either, The room just felt... sort of run down. Like a Super 8 room. Nice once but not so much anymore.

The area around the resort was nice but it looks like no money was spent on upgrades for the rooms.
Very fancy restaurant but wasaay too expensive.
The couches in the lobby were terrible I sunk up to my chin in them.
Water and tea in lobby could have been cold.
Tea did have good flavor

Evidently there is a lack of people to staff this very large establishment which consists of the main lodge and lake side cabins as well as lake homes and another complex about a mile away. We stayed here a couple years ago and loved everything about it - at that time, the restaurant was a little higher scale but had a large variety of tasty food. The bar was small but delightful.
This trip, check in is 4 p.m. and we arrived earlier hoping our room was ready. When it wasn't, we took a drive up the road, coming back at 3:50. Room still not ready. Only one employee handling all reservations so the line was quite long at that time. Finally, after 5 we were we could check in and when we got up to our second floor room, we found the head of the Human Resources Department had been the one to clean our room (he did a good job, by the way)! We didn't see a single other person cleaning the whole time there although there was evidence of the cleaning cart here and there but no one in sight.
Where we had enjoyed a lovely meal last time in the restaurant, it is currently a Chop House with very high priced food - a steak was $80.00 and consists of items such as Wagu beef and Sturgeon - not our type of food or cost. We chose not to eat there but went into the town of Two Harbors for supper.
The room was clean with 2 queen beds, a small refrigerator, microwave, single serve coffee pot and a large window which opens with a view of Lake Superior. Comparing it to the other places we stayed on our trip, it was very over priced in every way - the room was $219 but wound up $281 due to MN resort taxes, etc. It was not worth that.

The main lobby / entrance area looks rather tired and needs an update and more welcoming presentation. The exterior grounds definitely need a sprucing up and refresh both in the front and the back of the main building !!

This property has great potential, but lack of upkeep has left it in dire need of renovation and improvement. The firepits and s'mores are a great amenity! Staff seemed accommodating, but follow-through was lacking.

Vacation away from it all, wonderful place to stay. We stayed in a King Suite, the kitchenette is wonderful and the views were breathtaking. The new restaurant is fabulous. The remodel is really beautiful.

Pros: Clean. Friendly. Firepit is nice.
Cons: The least expensive room has 2 double beds and starts at $149 plus $35 "resort" fee plus tax. That's over $200 for the night. The King bed room was over $300. Queen size beds are a must at this price. The room is good size, but bathroom is tiny and the room needs renovation. It's old. Plastic-feeling furniture like you find at a cheap furniture store. Pool needs to be refinished. Hot tub was warm, not hot. 10 day cancel policy or they keep your deposit is a bad policy. Room was HOT all weekend, even with (LOUD) A/C running and keeping us awake.

There was an extension cord plugged in the wall in the hallway. It goes into the drop ceiling, and powers some "drop lights" hanging through holes in the ceiling. This is a fire marshall's nightmare.

During dinner, the fire alarm sounded 3 times. Nobody acknowledged that it happened, much less do anything. Dinner was ok. A burger is $20 a la carte. No fries included. Wild Boar ribs were good, but $35. Cheapest entree was $35, includes nothing on the side and there's no bread. Salmon roasted on a plank $35. And that's all you get. A piece of salmon and a block of wood. Waygu steak was good, but was not a $45 steak. And, it included nothing on the side. Where do they think they are? This isn't NYC or even Minneapolis. The food was okay, but not worth its cost. Three of us, one glass of wine each and our bill was $220 plus tip. And when we joked about a "fire sale" dessert, we were laughed at. It was a joke, but "we're sorry for the disruption" is the minimum expectation! The next evening we had a better meal at Black Woods. Food was better, accompaniments were very nice, and the three of us spend $60 plus tip.

Even at AmericInn, with a $100 room you get a free hot breakfast and 2 queen beds. Here, they don't even have a cup of coffee for you. Again, I didn't even get a "sorry" when I asked. Just "no, we don't offer any coffee". There is an ice rink and free rental skates. But, the attendant said the ice is kind of rough, so not very good. You can rent a snowmobile. $400 per day. This is the most expensive rental sled I've ever heard of.

Three years ago we were here with a snowmobile club. We were unexpectedly there the prior week. Lucky thing... they had booked our group dinner on the wrong week. If we hadn't noticed, they would bill us and not be ready.

Needless to say, we will NOT be back again. 3 times a loser.

Response from North Shore Resort Company, Marketing at Superior Shores Resort
Responded Mar 7, 2022
Hello Stephen, It is unfortunate that you have failed to understand the North Shore market. I encourage you to review the area before making negative reviews that are incorrect. To use your example, the Americinn at the same time you referenced is charging $230 a night for a similar double guest room; meaning their rates are even higher than ours are currently. Yes our restaurant is a la carte, as is the standard for most steakhouses. We agree with your conclusion that maybe we are not the property for you. However I'm not sure you will find anything comparable on the North Shore for the $100 a night you are looking for. All the best.

I would suggest calliing the resort and they can tell you what rooms for pets are available for the date of your travel.

Hi Daybreak, Thank you for bringing this up! We certainly don't want our potential guests to have an experience with any less than excellent customer service. So, I will endeavor to track down and speak with the agent you spoke with, to make sure this doesn't happen again. Now about your question, I believe this is the best place to stay, so I can't help you on that one - but there are very nice places up and down the shore, from Duluth to Grand Marais. Please enjoy your trip Up North, wherever you stay :)

are small dogs allowed and what is the charge
Answer from Beth M
Hi Gigsby53, We do have a select number of dog friendly rooms - we have rooms with two beds, a single king bed, or one bedroom suites. We do have a $15/night pet fee. You will sign a pet contract at check-n as well (just to acknowledge our pet policies). Hope this helps!

Some units allow dogs...I think it is $30/night. When you look online at the units it will specifically say if dogs are allowed. Dogs are allowed in the main lodge area and throughout the grounds.
