Taylor Swift Has 250 Songs From Her Eleven Albums — And I Ranked Them All
Hi, I'm Hannah, and I am a MASSIVE Swiftie. I have been to every single one of her headlining tours, and I can pretty much name every single song she's ever written.
So now that we've had a little time for The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology to sit, I decided to undertake the gargantuan task of ranking them! I judged 250 songs in total* in ten different categories, to add up to scores out of 100.
Q&A:
Q: How did you decide which songs to include?
A: I included every single song from Taylor's eleven albums, including their bonus songs. As a longtime Swiftie who was around for debut, I also included a few popular unreleased tracks from before her debut album and from the Beautiful Eyes EP, which I think we can reasonably expect to be on "(Taylor's Version)" of Taylor's debut album. I also included any songs Taylor performed for soundtracks. However, I did NOT include any songs Taylor only features on. These are: "The Joker and the Queen, "Highway Don't Care," Two Is Better Than One," "Gasoline," "Renegade, "Birch," "Both Of Us," and "The Alcott." I don't feel like they count as "Taylor Swift songs" for the purposes of this list. I also did not include covers, except for "Untouchable," since it's on one of her eleven studio albums.
Q: Why did you assign these numbers?
A: Taylor is the bridge queen, and to me, the bridge is the most important part of a song, so I made that one out of 20. "Originality" and "performance/vocals" felt slightly less important, and also like they'd be difficult for me to judge as exactly (I also worried those categories would favor later work if they were weighted too much).
Q: What do you mean by "emotion?"
A: This is a mix of the emotions in Taylor's voice on the track and the emotions elicited while listening to it, whether happy, angry, or sad.
Q: Why did you use "Does It Slap?" rather than "Catchiness" or a less cringe term?
A: Because I'm a millennial, and I am cringe.

Actually, one last thing: Don't hate me too much for low ratings! If a song is rated 50% or 60%, it doesn't mean I don't like it — it's just the ratings I'm using for songs that aren't, IMO, absolutely life-changing, so I can have room to give varied scores to the songs ranked above it. It doesn't mean I think it's a 50% song in the grand scheme of the world of music.
250.Coming in last..."Closure" from Evermore: 16%
I'm sorry to my Evermore girlies, but I truly believe the worst Taylor song is on Evermore. There's something about this song that feels grating, like it was rewound and then played back on a tape. And the background beat kind of sounds like a kid banging on a bunch of pots and pans. I'll give it a higher emotion score for how biting it is, but that's about all I'll give this song, except maybe a bit for originality. This is the only Taylor Swift song I will actively skip every single time.

I used to listen to a live version of this song that was SO much better than the produced version. I think it just feels overproduced to me, and it loses the emotion of the simple guitar lead-in of the live version, and the belting just made this song a lot better. There also isn't really a bridge.

It's hard to even give this one a chance, given it's from one of the worst movies ever. I feel like Taylor uses a strange accent, and I don't think Taylor's voice, as beautiful as it is, is well-suited to Broadway-style songs. I think this could be a stronger song for someone else to sing.

This song just doesn't really have mass appeal. Like, I don't want to listen to it unless it's a week before Christmas. The lyrics and music have to be simple because they follow Christmas song rules, so it feels pretty formulaic. It's still pretty, though!

I know Taylor wrote this when she was super young, but it still feels a little juvenile to me, even compared to the other songs on Fearless. It's not my fave, personally, but it is catchy, which is why it gets a higher score in "slaps." I also like the bridge!

I've never really liked this song, tbh. It's cool that it starts with the chorus, but I wouldn't say I like the chorus very much so that actually works against it. At least it has a bridge, which is too short IMO, though I like Taylor's voice in it.

I don't love the chorus, but I think it would be a stronger song if it was just Future in the verses and Taylor in the chorus. Ed Sheeran feels kind of out of place here, though I don't even mind his verse on its own. I don't love when Taylor raps or sing-talks, but it's not terrible here — I just don't like all three verses together. There's just too much going on in this song to me! Also, there's no bridge.

This is my least favorite TTPD song. First of all, it has no bridge. And then I just don't feel like the tune or lyrics are super strong! It just feels ever so slightly half-baked to me.
Wow, I'm sounding like a hater. The praise is coming, I promise! But we gotta get through these first. We're in the 200s, people!

The 3 a.m. tracks from Midnights are SO hit or miss to me. Some are better than every song on the main album, and some I just low-key don't really like. I don't want to say "dislike" because it's not that I actively dislike "High Infidelity"...I just don't necessarily have positive feelings towards it. Like, I just feel...neutral about it? I don't feel like it's super catchy or has incredible lyrics or anything. And then there's no bridge!

This song is fun, but I always forget about it. It feels like maybe a bonus track from Fearless, but it also feels slightly half-baked. I don't love the chorus, and the bridge is just okay.

I like the concept behind the song, but I feel like there are some similar concepts in "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince," done more subtly. I do want Taylor to comment more on politics, but I feel like this song is a little too broad, besides the part that's obviously about school shootings, to feel as impactful as I want it to. I'm also giving the bridge a zero because there isn't really one, except maybe if you count "they're not gonna help us", which comes before instead of after the second chorus.

I hate to say it because this song is catchy, but I am not much of a fan. It just feels a bit forgettable to me. I also can't stand the lyric, "Sit quiet by my side in the shade, and not the kind that's thrown, I mean the kind under where a tree has grown." I'm sorry!!!

I feel like the lyrics could be stronger. "When it was good, baby, it was good, baby" always frustrates me because I wish the second part rhymed with "baby" instead of repeating it. The rest of the chorus is cute, but overall, this song is a bit underwhelming to me!

Like it's from the Beautiful Eyes era. It's catchy, but otherwise, I'm not a huge fan. However, it has a great bridge with great vocals.

Honestly, I've kind of come around to this song. It's still not my fave, but it kind of slaps. It's just fun! I only wish that Brendon and Taylor would collaborate on a song better suited to both their voices and a mix of them because I feel like this was not what I expected or wanted from a Brendan Urie duet. Points off for the bridge and lyrics because of the line, "Spelling is fun," even though it's gone. Although now...it's kind of camp, and I want it back?

I was actually a little underwhelmed with the level of passion in the happier songs on this album. They don't have that same giddy, happy feeling as the ones on Lover, for example.

And there's no real bridge.

As a teenager, this was also always a personal fave of mind, so I have an unreasonable attachment to it. I still think it's a sweet song, but "Forever Winter" is a stronger song with a similar message. The lyrics feel pretty simple, but the second verse is strangely MUCH stronger — "I guess it's true that love is all you wanted, because you're giving it away like it's extra change, hoping it will end up in his pocket, but it leaves you out like a penny in the rain, oh 'cause it's not his price to pay" — life-changing. I also think the chorus is powerful musically and I still love to belt it. There isn't really a bridge — just a lower-intensity version of the chorus — which sort of works for me here, but I would've preferred a real bridge.

I also love it when Taylor's voice is a little lower like this, which felt especially cool in her younger era when it was rare. I also think it's really unique, but it still feels like it fits into the album. It doesn't have much of a bridge, but it works here, so I'm not marking it too low (besides, that wasn't Taylor's choice). I don't know how much it slaps, though!

I think it's a much stronger song if you divorce it from its context. Without the context, it's a fun, defiant anthem, so it's getting pretty high scores for me on everything, even though it's a slightly uncomfortable listen to me.

I guess "The Best Day" is about similar themes, but this one goes a bit harder because it has more of an edge and bitterness to it while also staying sweet. Also, "I just realized everything I have is someday gonna be gone" might be one of the most devastating lines Taylor has ever written.

It's such a great song about underdogs and friendship and accomplishment, and it always just makes my heart swell. Like "The Story of Us," the metaphor feels young, but here it feels like it's in a good way — like it's telling us that the feeling you're supposed to get from this song is like finishing a great children's book or watching the part of the movie where the heroes defeat the dragon.

It also feels like the precursor to "So High School" and reminds me SO much of her and Travis. The only downfall is the lack of a strong bridge...and I can't break my rules just because I personally like the song! I'm really trying to be at least a little bit objective here.

I love this song because, beyond its catchy tune, it plays on prior themes of embracing personas the public thrust upon her, but this time instead of mocking them, it sort of blows off the curtain. It's a strong song and definitely one of my favorites from TTPD! It just feels super vulnerable and candid. I just wanted more of a bridge!

There's something...freer about it, I guess? Anyway, this is one of my fave Fearless songs.

First of all, it just feels so important and impactful given that it's about Taylor's grandfather and the healthcare workers during COVID. It's genuinely devastating, and yet it still goes hard. Is it bad that I belt "SIR I THINK HE'S BLEEDING OUT!" And "There's some things that you just can't speak out" kills me. But...it doesn't really have a bridge. I don't feel like it needs one, so I won't give it a zero there, but I can't rate it high, either.

I feel like this one isn't getting enough love. It's kind of strange to have a song about a music video for another song, which itself is a vaulted longer version of a different version of the song...but it works. It's also so interesting to see how cathartic making "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" was for Taylor. And the line "he said since she was so wise beyond her years, everything had been above board...she wasn't sure" just devastates me. It's wild to me that Taylor can nail these feelings — of sinking back into childhood when your heart is broken, or being taken advantage of — over a decade after they happened. It all just breaks my heart, and yet I don't find this song too sad to listen to because it also has this hopeful message about the power of art.

It just feels like this emotional buildup and release of sadness and bitterness and saying goodbye. I love this song so much.

I think it's the urgency and desperation of it — it's more than grief or sadness. There's hope and bite in it. And the "spending my last coins so someone will tell me it'll be okay"...is this a callback to "Tied Together with a Smile" I see??? If so, I'm even more broken. Brava, Taylor.

I ranked this one low on a previous ranking and got a LOT of hate for it. And you know what? I'll be the first to admit I was wrong. This song is an absolute BANGER. I feel like it took me seeing it live to truly appreciate it. And the bridge??? (That we get twice? Is it still a bridge? Again, I don't know the technical stuff super well). "HE LOOKS UP GRINNING LIKE A DEVIL" changed my life, and I don't know how it didn't when it first came out.

This song is so freaking good. The intensity of the chorus (the drums in the background!!!) just works so well and makes this song so fun to sing. I also love the giving into the bitterness of "I hope it's shitty in the Black Dog" — it gets high emotion points.

I genuinely think this is one of the most beautiful songs Taylor has ever written (I know I say that a lot at this part of the list, but she has so many songs I think it's fair to have a bunch that are "one of the best"!) It describes a more mature love than the one from "Fearless," and has a much quieter joy to it, which only allows for the beautiful tune to shine through even more. It feels like the kind of song to waltz to, which earns it a bit higher on originality.

It's rare that a quieter song like this slaps, but this one does, mostly due to the bridge. I won't say too much about this since I have the 10-minute version as well, but it's a masterpiece and only loses points on originality (before the 10-minute version, it didn't feel quite as groundbreakingly original).

I feel like "The Archer" never gets its due credit!!! But these are some of the strongest lyrics Taylor has written, IMO. They're absolutely devastating and yet, like "All Too Well," they're so easy to belt out. This song makes me feel feelings I didn't know I had. It also feels unique amongst some of Taylor's other songs, and I think her voice, emotion, and overall performance are just really strong. And yes, the bridge is just a repeated line for the first half, but it works here, and the part it leads to is just fantastic.

I feel like people are going to be surprised at how many Lover songs I have near the top. I personally think Lover goes vastly underappreciated, and I at least partly blame the pandemic and the fact that Taylor was never able to tour for this album. And this is definitely one of the best Lover songs. I just love an upbeat-sounding song that is genuinely devastating, and that's what this is. And the bridge is incredible.

This is the ULTIMATE Taylor Swift angst song. It's the closest she gets to rock, and I have always wanted a rock album from her. It's also the only Taylor Swift song where — I'm so sorry, Taylor!!! — I still prefer the original. It just captures the raw teen angst better! I feel like this will be contentious, but I truly cannot see a single flaw in this song (except maybeeee that I wish there was a bit more to the bridge — but it has great intensity). I love it. It has such a great edge and desperation. I literally can't think of a Taylor Swift song that goes harder.

I guess I'll dock a point on originality because it doesn't feel wildly unlike other things Taylor has done, but really, this song is just perfect.

This is like the sequel to "Anti-Hero," where she's embraced that identity. My ONLY issue with this song is so ridiculously nit-picky and personal — I don't like the "levitate" word choice. It pulls me out of the song because it gives a comical image of someone levitating. This might be partly because I saw a Spongebob edit with Plankton flying and singing this song and I cannot for the life of me get it out of my head. I'm knocking off a single lyric point for "levitate," and if you're mad about that, you can take it up with Plankton, not me. (I'm mostly kidding. This is definitely a top 5 song, but I think the ones ahead of it are even better.)

"WHAT A SHAME SHE'S FUCKED IN THE HEAD!" is one of the best Taylor lines to scream-sing — this might be my favorite Taylor bridge. This is a gorgeous song in every single way. It'll always remind me of Dani in The Haunting of Bly Manor, which just makes it even better to me.

I will forever be mad that this was on the 3am edition and not the first version because it's not only the best Midnights song, it's one of Taylor's best songs, period. The lyrics are devastating, and then it also has this incredible intensity. It's perfection in every category, except, I guess, originality, since it's similar to themes in earlier songs.
