About
This pedestrian-only boardwalk spans 12 blocks and is peppered with oceanfront eateries, tequila bars, and vendors selling street food—sip on a margarita as you take in the stunning ocean views. Also, check out the vendors selling regional handicrafts and traditional sweets. Travelers come from all over for the art exhibitions and buzzing nightlife. During your stroll along the ocean, you'll come across impressive bronze sculptures and street performers like the acrobatic spectacle of Voladores de Papantla. Hit the boardwalk early for a spectacular sunrise and snap a photo with the vibrant block-lettered sign of Puerto Vallarta as a holiday keepsake. – Tripadvisor

- hr1487Catlett, Virginia215 contributionsBeautiful views and lots of people watching!Gorgeous and lively. We started at the north end and made our way to the River Cuale. We took a left off the bridge and toured the little island before making our way into Gringo Gorge and up to the cathedral. Then south again to enjoy the liveliness of the farmers market and Zona Romantica. The south end def seems much more lively and next time we will spend more time there.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 25, 2023
- John WLaGrangeville, New York821 contributionsScenic BoardwalkThis was our first trip to Puerta Vallerta as a port stop from a cruise ship. We took a taxi from the cruise port to the far end of Malecon, past Isla Quale, and at a fare of $15 for the two of us. And, we had a very enjoyable walk past the many statues, beaches, shops, street vendors, pubs and restaurants, and some exploring of the old town area. This is a great activity to do if you don't have much time here.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 4, 2023
- Anita C SSheffield, United Kingdom73 contributionsDay tripMy husband and I decided to get out of our hotel and explore the Malacon. It's a lovely walk along the seafront with lots of shops , restaurants, and bars . There's lots of arts and culture to see and it's well worth a visit . The only negative we can give is that some of the costs were surprisingly high but it didn't spoil our tripVisited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 6, 2023
- Capn KirkTwin Falls, Idaho36 contributionsGreat overall family activity. We visited this area a few times while in PV with older parents and young children. There are several places to eat, drink, and shop while in this location. It got hot during the daytime, so take some water with you. It is worth spending a few hours for sure and there is a flea market that was fun to visit also in this general area. It cost almost nothing to taxi or uber here so I would make this a definite stop. If you walk south far enough to cross over a bridge you will be in the "romantic" zone, which seems to be a whole world of it's own. There is a heavy LGBTQ component in that area, just FYI.Visited May 2023Written June 2, 2023
- fabioinmontrealMontreal, Canada4,818 contributionsMust visitLively lovely place. Lively walk with so many statues and history. I went several times and loved each time more. I’d suggest that you take app or print the list of stairs and walk slowly from Rosa hotel to the last statue. Simply beautiful experience. Along the water walking with watching statues and learning about them … what a pleasure.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten June 16, 2023
- JennioDesMoinesPella, Iowa171 contributionsWorth checking out while you're in PVWe enjoyed our time at the boardwalk, though there are some vendors that see us Americans a mile away and start slapping jewelry on our wrists and asking for $100! The vendors on the street are willing to come down in price if you are interested in haggling a little. We loved stopping by all of the different artwork and statues. The view is amazing along the whole waterfront.Visited June 2023Written June 23, 2023

- Marie CChicago, Illinois12 contributionsBuy the tuba on the Malecon!Back in October 29, 2019, I left a review of the Malecon entitled "Buy the agua fresca!" Well, I'm here to fix that mistake. It wasn't agua fresca. I now realize we bought a drink called tuba. We came across a lovely older man all in white (who we were very excited to find, since it was so hot), and he was a tubero - a tuba vendor. Don't be put off by the huge jug of white beverage being served out of a pretty rustic cooler right on the sidewalk. It's the best. Don't get me wrong, agua fresca is wonderful, but find the guys with the white drink (with nuts and sometimes apple chunks in it, and other yummy unidentifiable bits) and go enjoy it by the water's edge. It's the best possible way to cool off on the Malecon ever invented (aside from jumping off the pier).Visited August 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten July 16, 2023
- John S1 contributionHilton Vallarta Riviera All-Inclusive Resort, Puerto VallartaStayed here in July of 2023. Had a great time the Hotel was very accommodating to whatever we needed. The staff was polite and helpful and happy to assist in anything we needed. The only con I would say is that the hotel is not near anything. You would have to taxi or Uber to get downtown or anywhere. We like to walk around the area but there was nothing next to the hotel. Also we used Uber because the taxi would take advantage of You unless you used pasos. Uber would let you use a CC. The hotel drinks were fine, food was great.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 25, 2023
- Samantha BAustin, Minnesota3 contributionsAmazing and Beautiful! The views were amazing! The sculptures throughout the boardwalk were beautiful and informative. We took so many pictures of the signs and the sculptures as well as the breathtaking views of the ocean! The shops were my favorite! So many different things to buy and look at. We ate lunch at Otto's and it did not disappoint! Highly recommend planning an afternoon or the whole day there!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 11, 2023

As you would expect this area offers all types of shops & stalls offering products which tourists love to buy. The street entertainers and bronze artwork as well as some of the local character5 keep you occupied and there is plenty on offer. If you stop off for a drink or refreshments check the prices first as it's easy to get ripped off with some restaurants charging three to four pounds for a small bottle of water or a coke.

When we came to Puerto Vallarta 5 years ago, this malecon was nearly new, so on Saturday we returned to see any changes. From our Nautico area, we took the 10 peso public bus (“Centro” from near Plaza Neptuno) which dropped us off at Plaza Hidalgo (Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Refugio) near McDonald's. A block away is the 2001 Millenium Sculpture and the beginning of the Malecon. It winds up the beach revealing many sculptures (bronze, sand and even a few human) passing restaurants and souvenir shops ending nearly 1 km later at the Naval Museum. After visiting the nearby Plaza de Armas and its Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, we crossed the pedestrian bridge to the colorful and tasty Saturday Market. It's great to see it improved and so active.

The Malecon is a beautful boardwalk of about 1.5 km along the bay. You will see and hear the waves on one side, shops, restaurants and bars on the other side, and some nice sculptures every block. In the middle of the malecon you will see the Los Arcos ampitheatre where you enjoy nightly performances in Spanish of clowns, comedians, dancers and music. Also near this spot is the zocalo or main square and the Church of Guadalupe, which are must-see places. Where the malecon crosses the River Cuale from Centro to Zona Romantica you have a nice pedestrian bridge and you easily can walk onto the Isla Cuale island, which is a nice quiet spot to visit and enjoy nature.
Activity on the malecon goes from early morning with joggers and dog walkers until late-night hours, with some bars and nightclubs open very late. In one area near the Naval Museum you will see on some evenings a range of food vendors with small stands selling corn, ceviche, sausages, burgers and french fries, cakes, crepes, and other options for inexpensive prices.
You will find that a few of the shops, especially those selling tequila, tour tickets, jewlery, and some restaurants can be very persistent in trying to get you to come in and spend your money. Unfortunately, a small number of vendors may fib to you, with lines such as "hey, you dropped something". This seems to be a new tactic of a small number of salespeople, and it might cause distress to some visitors who aren't forewarned. If you aren't interested, just keep going. No need to stop or say a word, but unfortunately those sales tactics do detract somewhat from this beautiful prominent stretch of Puerto Vallarta.
However, the malecon is a beautiful feature of Puerto Vallarta, well worth a visit with your camera, either solo or with friends and family. A tip for first timers: pay attention to the bike lane painted on the malecon. Although it is clearly marked, some people miss it, walk in the bike lane and get startled by bikes whizzing by at fast speeds. Also watch out for the small gray "pineapples" demarcating the edges, don't trip on them!

There is something for everyone on The Malecon. Stunning sunset photos from the second floor window seats at La Bodeguita del Medio. The B del M has great Cuban music all day. At night awesome Cuban bands play the music that will bring out the tremendous salsa dancers in the crowd. Countless restaurants along the Malecon for every palate. Beautiful jewelry stores and leather shops and Cuban cigars and tequila tasting rooms and adventure/excursion vendors and ........ you go visit Puerto Vallarta's awesome Malecon.

PV continues to enhance the boardwalk with artwork, but it's the beautiful view of the city and ocean - especially at sunset - that makes this such a great attraction. If you're like me, hearing the waves hit the sand is calming. Love this area.

Our first trip to Puerto Vallarta was in 1983. l We have been back many times and hope to continue as long as possible. Big changes have occurred and none are more evident in services to the tourists in the downtown. Streets are improved and much more accessible but many still retain the old mexico cobble stone appeal. Taxis are much cleaner and modern than just a few years. Also buses have recently been upgraded and are now modern and airconditioned. The fare is 10 pesos per trip . A big change is in the Malecon. It is a new concrete walkway along the waterfront connecting old and new Valllarta. There are many shops and restaurants ranging in all types of food. The Blue Shrimp is on the Old side of the River Calle and is situated right on the beach. The speciality is shrimp of all sizes. There are also many excellent restaurants in Old Town right off the Boardwalk.
Entertainment occurs nightly . We always feel safe downtown but like any big city worldwide be aware of your surroundings. We are already booking our next year's trip

You would be hard pressed to visit PV and not come to El Malecón during your stay. It is iconic, colorful, lively and lots of fun. The boardwalk stretches for many blocks along the beach and there is no vehicular traffic allowed on the main stretch (cars need to stay back one block).
You will find tons of vendors ranging from the flea market to dedicated stores, and true street vendors. Bargains are all over the place, but you may need to haggle a bit with the street vendors to avoid overpayment.
There are tons of great photo opportunities, including many statues and scenic overlooks. You will also find tons of restaurants and bars. The vast majority of those along the water are tourist-centric so you will not find the most traditional flavors of Mexico on the boardwalk. Also expect to pay quite a bit more given the location. Prices are still reasonable, but are 2-3 times as expensive as the spots locals actually frequent which are one or two blocks off the boardwalk.

During our 10-day trip, my husband and I walked from the north end of 5 de Diciembre to the Playa Los Muertos pier and back every night. From street vendors to music and dance performers to a host of restaurants and venues, it's never a dull sight. I recommend going both in the daytime and at night to see the widest variety. It's also quite safe (if very packed, especially during the high tourist season) so just get out and enjoy the walk.

The Malecon is one feature that makes Puerto Vallarta so special. No traffic along the oceanfront, and a lovely seawall walkway full of statues, sculpture, sand sculptures, trees, lovely designs along the brick and tile paved walkway. Access to the beach and viewpoints jutting out a ways into the bay. Shops and restaurants all along the way, the Malecon is probably more than a kilometre from old town north. Sipping a beer under a palapa on the beach, watching the sunset - there are any number of ways to enjoy this lovely opportunity to be out in the fresh air of this lovely little town.

Malecon is absolutely one of the places you really should go to if this is your first trip to Puerto Vallarta. It's a little quiet right now, because of covid, but there are still visitors having a happy time, artists sharing their paintings and crafts.
There's a painted gold guy that is probably something reminiscent of Pancho Villa. Once in a while, you can see him posing with his rifle ....and talking on his phone that's being hidden by the rifle stock. Stealth communication. But if you've got a little money to spare, why not take a photo with him.
There are also a lot of restaurants and bars along the way; statues to see and take pictures with; sunsets to stare at; toy parachutes and light gadgets to buy; clothes and jewellery to try on; ice-creams to slurp on; and warm Sea-of-Cortez waters to saunter and amble along the beach in some parts.

Lots of safe parking along street. A starting place- if you do not have walking restrictions, I’d say one point is as good as another.

Me and my wife wintered in Bucerias MX. For 28 years. I was back.to visit the month of January, now a Permanent resident of Texas. We always used Decameron cabs from Bucerias, and felt safe. I will say things have really changed, and has become very busy. I would do your research, people have become more desperate after Covit. I would not travel teal late , 10pm or later, and would not use uber. Take care, and be safe.

There are dozens of them, look for the stamp, 925 or higher. In Mexico also, you get what you pay for, the high end shops are the most reputable but it doesn't come cheap there. But you will also find some really beautiful pieces there. Never buy from street vendors, you will get ripped-of for sure. We lived in Mexico for 5 years, we know and if you have the time, go to, for instance, San Sebastian, an old Spanish silver mining town. It’s only a little over an hour from PV. There you can go directly to the silversmiths, from the source. And it’s a beautiful small Mexican village, they don’t come much more authentic.

Hi. Just wondered if anyone knew of Any hotels what are situated near malecon. All inclusive. 4 star minimum. Thanks.
When is the next vacay??
Las Vegas, NV110 contributions
Playa los arcos has an all inclusive option but I don’t think it’s 4 stars, but the location is excellent. I know there are a couple all inclusive that are a little closer to downtown, and that’s only a few blocks away from the malecón. Sheraton buganvillas is a 4 star hotel I believe, they have an all inclusive option and it’s a 5 min cab ride to the malecón
