Looking at her arm, Rebekah knows she’s strong. We see that she is also unlike anyone else. No two alike. That’s the truth about scars — and the individuals who wear them. It’s also how we believe in practicing medicine at UF Health. Rebekah Gaudet had her whole life ahead of her when she was diagnosed with aggressive bone cancer. Her team of doctors created a plan just for her, stopping the cancer — and saving her arm. Today, Rebekah’s scar reminds her of her strength and the unique plan that changed everything.

Seeing no two stories alike is how we move medicine forward. Watch them for yourself at NoTwoAlike.org.

GOING OVER THE EDGE

BY JOANN GUIDRY

U

NIQUE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF MARION COUNTY FUNDRAISER ON FEBRUARY 27 INVOLVES A TALL BUILDING AND ROPES.

Do you consider yourself an adrenaline junkie? Wish you were an adrenaline junkie? Does the thought of rappelling down the third-highest building in Ocala get your heart pumping? If the answer is yes, then the Habitat for Humanity of Marion County’s Over The Edge fundraiser just might be for you. And, as an added bonus, that adrenaline rush will also benefit the HHMC mission of providing decent housing to community members in need. On February 27, from 8am-5pm, up to 90 people will be able to rappel down 76 feet from the roof of Ocala’s Holiday Inn & Suites. The catch? Those adventurous enough to make the rappel must first raise $1,000 for Habitat’s cause. The event is being staged by Over The Edge, a special events company that provides signature fundraisers for non-profit organizations throughout the United States and Canada. The company, which has put on more than 500 rappelling events since 2003, provides all the technical support and equipment. Its staff includes highly trained and certified industrial rope specialists. “This will be the first-ever Over the Edge event in Ocala,” says Laurie Whitaker, the development

16

JAN’16 ocalastyle.com

director for HHMC. “Last June, the Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast staged one at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi. Participants

“Seventy feet is a long way down, and people will have an exciting rappel.” rappelled from the 27th floor, 278 feet down. It was a huge success and several hundred thousand dollars was raised. We think it’ll be a great success here, too.” The Holiday Inn & Suites is the third-highest building in Ocala, behind the old Sovereign Building and the Hilton Ocala. After going up to the roof to inspect the hotel’s suitability for the event, Whitaker notes that indeed “Seventy feet is a long way down, and people will have an exciting rappel.” For those who raise at least $1,500, a Go Pro camera will be attached to their helmets and they’ll have a video recording keepsake of their rappel. Whitaker promises “other special incentives for those who raise more than $1,000.” Early Over the Edge committed participants include event sponsor representatives:

Burnyzz owner Josh Hart and his staff, K-Country 93.7FM’s Lewis Stokes and Classic Rock WindFM’s Charlie McGraw. Ocala Police Chief Greg Graham is also an early rappel signee. In addition to participants, event volunteers are needed. “We’re looking for general volunteers to manage the flow of the event,” says Whitaker. “And besides Over the Edge’s staff, we’ll need volunteers with rope or rappelling experience. So for those not interested in rappelling, they can still contribute by volunteering. It’s going to be a fun day for a great cause.” HHMC builds or renovates houses in partnership with families who qualify for home ownership based on three criteria: need, a

willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity and an ability to repay a no-interest mortgage. Since 1990, HHMC has built or renovated more than 200 homes for families in Marion County. In 2016, HHMC is slated to build 10 new homes in Silver Springs Shores.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS AND DISTRICT NEWS THAT SHAPE MARION COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

BY KEVIN CHRISTIAN, APR, CPRC

CADETS FOR A CAUSE Forest High School’s Junior ROTC cadets (Reserve Officers Training Corps) take their community service

seriously. So much so that they gathered 2,797 pounds of food and $1,000 to donate to Interfaith during the holiday season. All 12 cadet flights compete against each other to see who collects the most items. While students earn bragging rights and giving spirits, our community benefits from the generosity of these students, their families and financial support from the OCALA JEEP CLUB.

AND THE GIVING CONTINUES… LIVING HISTORY Talk about history coming to life! Fifth-graders at Eighth Street Elementary focused lately on the American Revolution and some of the key players of that era. After scouring the Internet for research, they created custom speeches and donned American Revolutionary costumes to become a living wax museum—all benefitting younger students at the school who walked through the exhibits and questioned the living legends about their historical lives.

Not to be outdone by older students, kids and adults at East Marion Elementary focused a recent Character Word of the Month on

“Thankfulness” and came up with much more than expected. The school donated 4,130 food items that benefitted East Marion’s own families in need, far surpassing the original goal of 1,300 items. PRINCIPAL RUSTY CORLEY and Peer Counselor MICHAEL CARTER helped count all the goods.

FUN TIMES AT THE FOUNDATION SHADY HILL SPARKLES

IN THE LEAD Two seniors are among 14 finalists statewide to become “Leaders for Life” and earn complete $40,000 college scholarships from the Take Stock in Children program. Vanguard’s ALLYSA QUICK and MTI’s MARY GREEN find out later this month if they actually finish in the Top Four. If so, this will be only the second year Marion County has ever had such winning leaders.

18

JAN’16 ocalastyle.com

It was a no-holds-barred Christmas celebration at Shady Hill Elementary. Every grade level presented musical numbers to parents and friends attending the festive celebration. Music Teacher SONDRA COLLINS had the Shady Hill Harmony students kick off the event with percussion instruments on some songs. The packed house sang, clapped and cheered kids on as they presented months’ worth of work during numerous holiday performances with the finale at the school itself.

How do you honor great volunteers and board members? Instead of a luncheon, you wear matching outfits and throw in an elf for good measure! Employees of the Public Education Foundation of Marion County, along with Board Chairman NICK “THE ELF” BLASER, held their second annual

drive through experience for the holiday season. Coffee and hot chocolate orders came complete with sprinkles if requested, along with some spirited moves from Mary, the Dancing Christmas Tree!

LEGACY HONORS LEGACIES There’s a unique wall in front of Legacy Elementary dedicated to school volunteers. The keystone face in this wall is HENRY DUDA, a former volunteer who donated over 20 years of service to Marion County Public Schools. Duda showed up every day without hesitation and shared his wisdom and perspective from decades of life experience. Students, administrators and community guests recently gathered to dedicate the wall in Duda’s honor, recognizing the importance school volunteers make. Last year at Legacy alone, adults volunteered 3,579 hours helping students and teachers.

NEW YEAR’S BY

JUDGE ERS G V STE EN RO

T

he couple slowly walked through the swinging doors and was seated at separate tables in the courtroom. I introduced myself and reviewed the court file for their case. After having them answer a few short questions, I signed the final judgment and told them their divorce was now final. After a brief moment of silence the former husband looked at his former wife and said, “Let’s go get breakfast.” The now eligible bachelor and bachelorette smiled and left the courtroom together. Divorce proceedings can involve complex issues not typically presented in other civil or criminal proceedings. The task of addressing parenting plans, alimony, distribution of debts and assets, etc. are very personal to those involved. These are the primary reasons it has been said that family law cases often result in good people acting on their worst behavior. But, surprisingly, not all such cases involve turmoil and strife. Simplified dissolution of marriage cases involve a couple with no minor children and no

DISSOLUTIONS dispute(s) regarding martial debts or assets, who have mutually agreed to conclude their marriage. For such cases I need only confirm the following: 1. the couple satisfies Florida’s six-month residency requirement, 2. they state their marriage is irretrievably broken, and 3. the wife confirms she is not currently pregnant. You can imagine the awkwardness involved with asking a woman if she is currently pregnant.

PATERNITY ISSUES IN FAMILY LAW CASES OFTEN PRESENT SCENARIOS THAT APPEAR RIPE FOR THE JERRY SPRINGER SHOW. If the wife answers “yes” to this question, I inform the couple their divorce is no longer “simple.” Once, when addressing a case for a couple in their early 80s, I asked the wife if she was currently pregnant and her husband replied with, “I sure hope not!” Paternity issues in family law cases often present scenarios that appear ripe for The Jerry Springer Show. One such case involved the divorce of a couple with four minor children. The wife explained that only the first, second and forth

child were her husband’s. The third child had a different father. When I asked how the third child was not her husband’s child, she responded with, “He (her husband) went to prison for two years, and I got lonely.” Ask a silly question… Alimony can also be a confusing topic for parties to comprehend. The primary issues are simply… how much (if any) and how long? Recently, I was conducting a hearing and was trying to help the husband understand the meaning of permanent alimony. “It’s until one of you dies, or she remarries,” I explained. “Seeing that both of you are clearly still alive, the only question would be if your former wife has any plans on getting remarried.” As if on cue, the 60-something year-old lady smiled and said, “Not unless that was a proposal.” There have been occasions where the parties have appeared for their final hearing, only to report they no longer want to be divorced. I recall one such instance when I asked the couple if their marriage was irretrievably broken and the husband replied with, “No sir, it is not.” The wife then confirmed they had decided to reconcile. Minutes later, the couple left the courtroom with copies of the order dismissing their case… and I was happy to be the one left at the altar.

Judge Steven G. Rogers currently serves as a circuit court judge. He lives in Ocala with his wife, three children and an extremely spoiled Australian Shepherd.

WATERS THE ST. JOHNS RIVER WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT’S GOVERNING BOARD recently

A NEW ROLE THE FLORIDA AGRICULTURE CENTER and HORSE PARK AUTHORITY Executive Director SHAWN DOHERTY was voted in as vice chairman of the TOURISM DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL at the November 12 meeting.

Duties include filling in when the chairman is absent and maintaining order among council members. The purpose of the council is to help nurture and grow Marion County’s travel and tourism industry. Doherty will continue as executive director of the Florida Horse Park as he has done for the past three years.

BUILDING A BETTER COMMUNITY

The Florida Municipal Electric Association recently honored the community service efforts of Ocala Utility Services by recognizing the municipal electric utility with the 2015 Building Strong Communities Award. Honored during FMEA’s annual Energy Connections Conferences and Trade Show in Orlando, OUS received the award for its commitment to enhancing its customers’ quality of life through community improvement programs, such as Light Up Ocala, Energy Star Rebates and the Weatherization Program. “Being a part of the community is about more than making sure the lights are on,” said FMEA Executive Director Barry Moline. “The recipients excel in not only taking an interest in seeing their communities succeed but also actively working toward making them better places to live.”

approved the acquisition of nearly 4,900 acres in Marion County that will protect Silver Springs and the Silver and Ocklawaha rivers. The property, called Silver Springs Forest, is located directly north of Silver Springs State Park. The district is partnering with the

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION and the CONSERVATION TRUST OF FLORIDA on the purchase.

The $11.5 million acquisition will contribute to an eight-mile buffer zone where forests “capture” rainwater to recharge the aquifer and augment the springs’ flow. The purchase will also protect the headwaters of Halfmile Creek and an unnamed tributary that flow into the Silver and Ocklawaha Rivers.

A GREAT ADDITION Fred and Kari Schweitz, owners of Too Your Health Spa, are excited to announce the opening of their newest spa location in Lady Lake. Doors will open to the public in the middle of January. The 16,000-square-foot facility will feature a 60-foot heated pool, infrared sauna, hydrotherapy whirlpool, three racquetball courts, tons of fitness classes and the most complete free weight room in the area. They even have free babysitting on-site for members while exercising. This is the fifth spa Fred has constructed in his 37 years in business, and he hopes it will help community members improve their health and their lives.

AN ARTISTIC MONUMENT THE OCALA ROTARY CLUB recently signed

an agreement with the City of Ocala to create a “Centennial Arbor” in Tuscawilla Park in downtown Ocala to mark the club’s 100th anniversary. City Council President JAY MUSLEH and Ocala Rotary Club President DENNIS DIMATTEO signed the agreement. The arbor, to be located in an area of Tuscawilla Park called an “Art Park” near the former train station, will be a permanent monument with four pillars representing the elements of Rotary’s “Four Way Test,” incorporating the words “Truth, Fairness, Goodwill and Beneficial” into the design. It will have seating for several people and will be lighted in the evening.

SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS

THE COLLEGE OF CENTRAL FLORIDA has been recognized as a military-friendly school by VICTORY MEDIA for 2016. The designation ranks CF as among the top 20 percent of schools nationwide that deliver the best experience for military students. It is the sixth year the college has received the recognition. ONTHEGO

A WILD ADVENTURE you have kids to juggle or you’re just going with friends, we have the tips and tricks you need to get the most out of your trip.

PARK STRATEGY

Stick to these basic rules to avoid crowds: It’s better to go on weekdays than weekends, and it’s best to avoid going on school and national holidays. Don’t worry about going during the busier summer months. If you can handle the heat, the more-than-usual staff on hand can handle the rides efficiently. Use these tips to save time, money and energy while at the park.

ORDER TICKETS ONLINE. Don’t get stuck waiting in line at the park. Purchase tickets ahead of time. (Chances are this will save you some cash, as well!) BE EARLY; STAY LATE. The crowds are usually thinnest during the first and last hour of the day.

BRING BAGGIES AND EXTRA BATTERY PACKS FOR CELL PHONES. Don’t let your

phone keep you from water rides or die halfway through the day.

PLANNING HELP Our favorite planning resources are theme park apps, and we think you’ll love them, too.

EAT AT NON-PEAK TIMES. Think early

dinner or late lunch.

STAY AT A PARK HOTEL. You’ll likely get a few perks, like transportation and early park entrance.

BUSCH GARDENS TAMPA DISCOVERY GUIDE APP: Use the GPS to help you locate

your car, tap to pay for food and merchandise, let the park’s map show you where to go and get alerts about show times and ride wait times. Plus, there’s an in-app camera with fun frames for photos.

MY DISNEY EXPERIENCE APP: Purchase park tickets, learn wait times and show times, organize and share plans, make dinner reservations and much more with this app. You can also find character greeting locations and keep track of your resort reservations. UNDERCOVER TOURIST ORLANDO PLANNING APP: This app can help you plan trips to Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld Orlando. It includes everything from a digital crowd calendar to wait times, a personalized trip schedule and events to skip or attend. Don’t want to use the app? Undercovertourist.com has a crowd calendar, weather forecast and events schedule to reference instead.

What mom doesn’t want to remember all of their toddler’s accomplishments—big or small. With the Milestone Toddler Cards, you can do just that… and you can capture it all on camera. This set of 30 durable cards includes such milestones as counting to 10, learning to jump or ride a bike and climbing the stairs. Once baby has achieved a milestone, simply write the date on the card, have them hold the card and grab your camera. The rest, as they say, is history. By the way, they make a version for baby’s first year as well!

FEVERFRIDA BY FRIDABABY $69.99 / fridababy.com

Fridababy, a Miami-based company, is providing worried parents with a no-hassle way to check baby’s temperature throughout the night. Every four seconds the FeverFrida checks in on your little one and alerts your tablet or phone when the temp goes above a predetermined threshold. How does it work? A tiny Bluetooth monitor and patch are placed under baby’s arm. As an added bonus, the data is stored for future use and the device reminds tired parents about medicine doses.

Any new mom will tell you it’s a daunting, scary task to trim their little one’s tiny nails. Hence the ever-popular mitten option. Well, ZoLi has provided anxious parents with peace of mind. The BUZZ B is a batteryoperated oscillating trimmer that safely files baby’s delicate fingernails without causing any harm to the surrounding skin. The device comes with four cushioned pads, each one designed for a different stage of your child’s growth.

MONBABY SMART BUTTON $169 / monbaby.com

The MonBaby is an award-winning baby monitor that clips onto your child’s clothing just like a button. The device tracks baby’s movements, sleep position and breathing patterns and will even transmit an alert to mom and dad’s phone if baby rolls to his or her belly while sleeping. Now the whole family can rest easy.

Simply add your ingredients, set your steam time and let the machine do the rest. The Baby Brezza will make delicious purées the perfect consistency for your little one, each and every time. The bowl holds 2 cups, so multiple meals are as easy as pie. The best part? It’s dishwasher safe.

Art is the expression of and when the soul‌ is the soul more pure and the

imagination more alive than in the heart of a child? Young eyes view an unblemished world through inquisitive, innocent eyes, lending a unique perspective to that which for most of us has taken on the patina of time. Marion County is home to many young artists whose talents provide us all a fresh, new look at the world around us.

BY JIM GIBSON

Life is Art

life is Ra’ahunte’ Grier believes best expressed

through the artist’s pencil or brush. The 18-year-old senior at North Marion High School has been drawing for as long as he can remember.

“I began drawing as soon as I was able to hold a pencil in my hand,” he says. “A certain amount of artistic ability is inborn, and I consider mine a God-given gift, but it also takes a lot of hard work and you have to be willing to learn. I have had some great teachers, and they have really helped me in my ability to draw and paint. One in particular is Ms. Maria Vasquez; she took me out of my comfort zone and taught me how to express myself in a more colorful way.” Ra’ahunte’ says he is inspired by hyperrealistic artist Chuck Close and aspires to have his drawings visually come to life on paper or canvas. Hyper-realism produces hand-drawn or painted works of art that cannot be discerned from a high-resolution photograph with the naked eye. “Most of my works are portraits of someone I know or of celebrities, but sometimes I simply imagine someone and draw my own creation. There is a lot of emotion involved… and to me art is internal emotion expressed outwardly,” he says. “My drawings represent a part of me, and each one is unique.” Ra’ahunte’ hopes to make art his life’s work. He hopes to attend Full Sail University,

which offers education in the entertainment and media industry. “My dream is to make art my career,” he says. “I would love nothing more than to be able to spend my life doing what I love most—bringing my art to life.”

t n e l a T f O s OceanWilliam L. Peterson

loves to draw anything that has to do with the sea.

“I love the ocean,” he says excitedly. “This past year we went to the Keys, and I saw the crystal clear water, and we went snorkeling. I even got to swim near

a sea turtle. It was great, and it made me want to draw even more things to do with the ocean, like dolphins and coral.” William, an 11-year-old sixthgrader at Ft. McCoy School, lives with his mom, Mary, and dad, Pete, in Silver Springs. Pete is a second generation sign-maker and owner of Pete Peterson Signs. William can be found most days working with his dad in the shop. “My dad started this business, and I took it over, and one day it could be William’s,” says Pete. “I like helping my dad, and I do think that one day this will be my business,” William says, “because I always want drawing and art to be a part of my life.” William says that when he feels stressed, all he has to do is get a good sharp pencil and some paper, and it calms him down quickly. He says his art teacher at Ft. McCoy, Ms. Jo Anne Dillard, has helped him to become better with his art through “constructive criticism.” “I love to draw, and I am also learning to paint,” he says. “I love to use my imagination when I draw. Sometimes I draw things like mermaids you might see in a cartoon, and sometimes I draw things I have seen when we go to the ocean during the summer.” Ms. Dillard says William is a “most awesome student” who is polite and courteous, presenting drawings to his teachers and friends as gifts.

As a young girl, was fascinated with eyes. She loved the detail involved in making them come to life. She began adding other facial features to her drawings, and soon she became an accomplished portrait artist. Leslie’s home in Summerfield contains many portraits she has drawn of family and friends. However, one of the portraits most important to her is one she drew of a total stranger. “When I was in middle school, a woman named Helen Greenspun visited our English class,” says Leslie. “This woman was a Holocaust survivor. Her story was so inspiring, and it affected me so much that I wanted to give her something to let her know how much she had touched my life. I saw an old weathered photo of her when she was about 20 years old, and I drew her portrait from the picture. When she returned to our

class, I presented it to her, and it moved her so much that it brought tears to her eyes. She still has the portrait I drew of her, and that makes me feel so good inside.” Leslie, a 17-year-old junior at Belleview High School, draws with graphite pencils, colored pencils and charcoal and paints with acrylics. “One of my drawings won first place in the Ocala Art Show, and two more won second place. One of the second place winners was displayed in the Appleton Museum,” she says. “Art is so important to me; it helps me express my feelings and emotions.”

Victoria, age 10, is a fifth-grade student at Harbour View Elementary where Lisa is her art teacher. At her home in Ocklawaha, Victoria creates art in practically every medium imaginable. “I love to make things. I especially love to draw with colored pencils,” she says, her voice tinged with excitement. “We have two dogs at home, and I love to draw them and pictures of other animals. Colored pencils are my favorite because I can make fine lines with them and I like the different colors.” Victoria also showcases her artistic abilities in basket weaving, ceramics, painting, dance, singing, skating and video production. “I love to skate, and I am a national champion artistic skater. I made a documentary film about skating called My Life in Skates. It won first place at the county and regional FAME Media Festival and placed third in the state,” she says. So what does this artistically inclined Renaissance Girl want to do when she grows up? “I want to be a teacher… not an art teacher like my mom,” she says matter-of-factly. “I will always love to draw and create, but I want to be a fourth- or fifth-grade teacher and teach kids.”

Making Her Mark Mya Velez

was born with the ability to draw… and draw she did. “When Mya was about 3 years old she drew a picture on the wall of our dining room,” says her father, David. “It was so good that I left it there, and when I paint our dining room I will paint

a frame around it and make sure it is always a part of our home.” Mya, a 10-year-old fifth-grader at Greenway Elementary School, says that drawing keeps her calm. “I am always calm at school, but when I am at home, I am a wild mess,” Mya says excitedly. “So I find some paper and a pencil and I sit down to draw, and it calms me down.”

David says Mya has left her mark “all over our house.” “She has drawn on our kitchen table, and the walls of her room are covered with beautiful drawings… like a mural,” he says. “I joke with her and tell her that her first paycheck will have to buy a new table and paint for the walls… but I would never cover up her art.”

In the eighth grade, West Port High School senior art teacher told him he needed to check out an app called Instagram. Bjorn gave it a look and was hooked on photography.

He has been a part of the Marion County Center for the Arts Creative Photography program for the past four years and has impressed his teachers with his skills. “In the beginning, I took photos with my iPod, but then I bought a Canon T3 Rebel, and that’s what I use now,” he says. “I like my photography to be conceptual and to convey emotion. I do a lot of self-portraits using a tripod and timer.” Bjorn isn’t sure if photography will be a vocation or remain a hobby but says it gives him a chance to release his own emotions. “I sometimes use my photography to show the sadness and seriousness of the world around me, and sometimes I just like to have fun,” he says. “I like to be abstract and catch unique situations in my shots.”

Mya says she started out drawing cartoon characters when she was younger, and now she draws portraits of teachers and family members or uses her imagination to draw characters she creates. “I love to draw,” she says. “My favorite is to draw pictures of girls that I make up in my head.”

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa:

LOOK BETTER, FEEL BETTER, BE HEALTHY As co-founders of Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa, Dr. Michael Holloway, medical director, and wife, Shannon Holloway, who serves as the company’s executive director, have developed an outstanding reputation for transforming clients both physically and emotionally. The MedSpa has a 12-year reputation for delivering medically directed weight management and medical spa services to clients throughout the region. Throughout the years, many of their clients drove from The Villages and surrounding areas to Ocala. Now, all these state-of-the-art services will be offered closer to home. The couple recently opened a second location in The Villages, and it’s safe to say this magnificent 3,500-square-foot facility will leave a lasting impression. The new facility is located in a serene area off U.S. Hwy. 441 in the beautiful Oaks at 138th medical complex. As clients approach the MedSpa, their senses will tune in to the unique exterior features, such as the natural and soothing

sounds of a four-tiered waterfall just in front of the grand cornertower entrance. Their minds will become even more at ease after seeing the facility’s striking décor, which resembles a world-class resort. After a brief stop at the elegant coffee station, clients will feel a sense of home as they approach the beautifully adorned lobby, which features an awe-inspiring bubble wall behind the reception desk. The bubble wall provides a peaceful and calming effect, as mesmerizing air bubbles constantly flow and change colors: green, red, blue, purple and gold. “De-stressing is very important because stress is a major issue in our society and a much overlooked part of health,” Dr. Holloway said. “Stress affects all aspects of one’s health, including struggles with weight, blood pressure, diabetes, energy levels and mood. We provide a real-life approach to help our clients not only lose weight but learn how to have successful longterm outcomes.”

“We’ve really raised the bar not just with our weight loss programs but all of the medical spa services we offer,” Shannon said. “We continually research and incorporate the latest, state-of-the-art technology in the marketplace, like our CoolSculpting® non-invasive, body-contouring technology that can help our clients rid themselves of that stubborn diet- and exerciseresistant fat, which helps to achieve that sleek and sculpted body one may desire.”

40

JAN’16 ocalastyle.com

“Residents of the greater Villages community have asked us repeatedly to open a second practice that was closer to them,” Dr. Holloway said. “We’re excited that we can better accommodate them. We offer something for everybody. You may not need to lose weight, but you might be in need of one of our many full medical spa services we provide.”

Let’s get pampered Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa is a medical practice that blends result-oriented treatments with the upscale feel and atmosphere of a destination resort. The wealth of services offered include weight loss, CoolSculpting®, Botox®, Restylane®, customized facials, including the incredible Hydrafacial®, peels, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, IPL photofacials, fractional skin resurfacing, permanent makeup and massage, just to name a few. “In addition to being a certified CoolSculpting® site, we are one of only a few practices that offers ‘dual-sculpting,’ which is very beneficial to our clients,” said Shannon. “For example, if they want to get rid of fat on both love handles, then we can use two machines at once rather than have them come for two separate appointments. This cuts treatment times in half.” The MedSpa’s technology is all FDA cleared and proven. The Holloways pride themselves on offering only evidence- and outcomebased models of care. “We’ve done our due diligence by carefully researching each of these procedures,” they said. “That’s why we have an incredible success rate in everything we do here. If we do not feel a treatment or procedure will provide a client with the desired result, then we do not incorporate it into our practice model.”

It’s time to renew and refresh

For two years, the Holloways have carefully thought out every detail in creating not only a practice with a unique design but also how to maximize efficient use of space. Their hard work has certainly paid dividends. The meticulous attention to detail and stunning décor will certainly leave patients feeling breathless. Crape myrtles, palm trees, butterfly

gardens, four-tiered waterfalls and stone columns dot the landscape. Inside, as a client undergoes treatment in a spa room, they can maximize relaxation by gazing skyward at the glimmering fiber optic star dome ceiling that features shooting stars and soothing colored sunrises and sunsets. After treatment, the client will experience the spa bathrooms that contain beautiful mosaic tile with a state-of-the-art body shower, crystal vanity light and a beautiful lavatory faucet that illuminates to provide a visual of the water temperature (red is hot, green is warm and blue is cold). Each spa room and treatment room features a unique décor and color scheme, including eye-catching paintings that hang on the wall. The bronze

and copper colored restrooms in the waiting area add even more elegance, style and artistic beauty to the facility. In addition, the MedSpa offers a unique spa package for a girls’ day out or couples’ escape where they can undergo simultaneous treatments and in between treatments enjoy a healthy catered lunch in a private, quiet oasis outside while listening to light music and admiring a butterfly garden and tranquil fountain. A simple massage is another wonderful way to de-stress. Without question, you’ll be hard pressed to find a medical spa that

Last year’s inaugural Coates Golf Championship, held at the magnificent Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club,

marked the first time in 10 years that the Ladies Professional Golf Association teed off its season in Florida. If the reaction of the players, the LPGA, tournament founders Randy and Mollie Coates, the tens of thousands of fans who showed up to cheer on their favorite women golfers and even legendary course architect Ron Garl are any indication of the tournament’s success, then the first drive hit that day was a shot heard round the world. 2015 Coates Golf Championship was a milestone in the rich tradition of Ocala golf. Approximately 80,000 golf fans attended the week-long, four-round event—a number Garl said was more indicative of a turnout at one of the LPGA majors. Mollie Coates, who founded the tournament along with her husband, Randy, says everyone involved was pleased and amazed at the tremendous fan and business support the tournament received in its first year and is looking forward to an even greater turnout and increased support this year. In a media interview, Garl said that the course, which is famous throughout the country for its unique design, was very well-received by the players with great positive feedback. Eight of Golden Ocala’s 18 holes are recreated “tributes” expertly modeled after famous holes on five of the world’s most prominent courses. “Course conditions are pristine,” says Golden Ocala General Manager Joe Donnelly. “What makes Golden Ocala so unique and perfect for an LPGA event such as The Coates is our flexibility in setting up the course to accommodate different calibers of

players. We can alter the length of our roughs and the width of our fairways, but most importantly, we have the ability to set up some really great pin placements and alter the speeds of our greens. Golden Ocala is a perfect place to start off the LPGA season.” Last year’s winner, Na Yeon Choi of South Korea, took home the winner’s purse of $225,000, her share of $1.5 million in total prize money. Choi carded a 16-under, 272 for the tournament, beating American Jessica Korda, fellow South Korean Ha Na Jang and New Zealander Lydia Ko by one stroke. Lydia Ko is the Rolex No. 1 women’s golfer in the world, a title she earned at the 2015 Coates Golf Championship, making her the youngest professional golfer male or female to be ranked world No. 1—a record previously held by Tiger Woods. Former Mount Dora Bible golf star Inbee Park now ranks a close second. Park tied for 13th place at last year’s Coates. Barring injury, all of the LPGA’s top players should be returning to this year’s event. The Coates tournament awards 500 CME Globe points to the winner. Globe points are awarded at each of the 32 professional tournaments held throughout the LPGA season in a Race to the Globe competition that culminates at the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Florida, in November.

The Birth Of Tradition Tradition is a word usually spoken by golfers when talking of major championships held on storied courses framed by fairways lined with hundred-year-old trees, aptly named footbridges crossing meandering creeks and plantation-style clubhouses with verandas overlooking breathtaking panoramas of lush green grass.

But even the most legendary championships began with a single stroke, a first round and the virgincrowning of its opening champion. This is how tradition begins—it is established. If the success of the inaugural Coates Golf Championship is any indicator of what it takes to establish such a tradition, then

tournament founders Randy and Mollie Coates have laid the cornerstone of a solid foundation. But the Coates know that the ultimate success of the tournament depends on more than just hard work and their commitment… it depends on community. “Ultimately, the status of any Official LPGA event lies solely

within the commitment of the title sponsor, and at Coates Golf, our dream would be to see this event carry on for decades,” Mollie says. “We are very fortunate that our partners at R+L Carriers and Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club have a similar vision. One hundred percent of our official partners from the inaugural 2015 event have

O

recommitted to us in 2016, many of which have increased their levels of partnership. Commitments from our local government, business participation through sponsorships and the community’s involvement as spectators are the only three things that will ensure the event is a success year after year.” At the same time the tournament was launched, the Coates also debuted Coates Golf, a company that engineers and manufactures performance equipment exclusively for female golfers. Mollie says the company was created for more than just equipment design, and it was aimed toward female golfers for a very specific reason. “Our focus is not only providing women with quality golf clubs that they can customize for any level of play but also to empower them in the sport and encourage them to expect more from the game,” says Mollie. “At Coates Golf, we not only equip women with exceptional equipment, we give them the same options as men when fitting themselves with clubs. We understand that these female golfers are athletes who take their game seriously, so we constantly ask ourselves why should they all be shuffled into one style of equipment? “Beyond what we do as a company, we want to be the cheerleaders for girls and women to have the confidence to believe in

themselves and to take the course head on,” Mollie says. “Our logo at Coates is an antelope because it is sleek, elegant and athletic—but mostly because female antelope grow horns just like the male antelope. Coates Golf strives to bring equality to the game.” The Coates have dedicated themselves to the success of the tournament and look forward to some exciting changes scheduled for this year’s event. “We learned so much about owning and operating an Official LPGA Event, so we have a lot of changes in store for the 2016 Coates Golf Championship. The spectator numbers we had blew us away, so we are completely changing the way parking, ticketing and will call is handled this year, making it much easier for crowds to get onto tournament grounds and enjoy the golf,” Mollie says. Tradition begins with the first stroke, and it looks as if for the Coates Golf Championship, it was a hole-in-one.

Attendees can taste a wide variety of beers supplied by 18 different breweries for one nominal price. “Since we first met with Randy and Mollie, it was clear that they were on to something big in the golf industry,” says Mike LePorin, vice president of sales and marketing with Tri-Eagle Sales. “To attach our brands to such a reputable tournament is a great opportunity for us at Tri-Eagle. Michelob Ultra will again be the Official Beer of the Coates, and expanding our partnership to help bring a craft beer festival to the 2016 tournament is yet another way of reaching a significant number of consumers who would otherwise be difficult to reach within a one-week time period. “As our portfolio has expanded to include multiple craft and import brands beyond our Anheuser-Busch portfolio, the Coates Golf Championship is a great means of exposing consumers from Orlando to Tallahassee to these great beers,” LePorin says. “We look forward to years of growth in partnership with the Coates Golf Championship and Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club.” “Team Cone is excited about partnering with Coates Golf for the 2016 Coates Golf Championship,” says Steve Conner of Cone Distributing. “When we heard that during the 2016 Coates Golf Championship the organizers were looking to host a craft beer festival throughout the tournament, we knew this would be a great event for us to partner. Craft beer festivals, especially one to be held during an event that draws tens of thousands of guests per day, provides us a great opportunity to showcase a wide variety of world-class beers. new year brings new opportunities, new successes and new reasons to celebrate and be thankful. As the new year begins, I’d like to take this opportunity to look back on what was accomplished in 2015 and what we’re planning for 2016. This past year, we held several successful charity events, raising money for local organizations and causes; helped Marion County’s homeless children and families with the “Stuff the Bus” program and more; and donated $6,000 to local teachers to help support student projects in need of funding. This year, we hope to continue the success of our charity events and community outreach projects. Save these dates! Our Global International Committee will host a “Taste of the World” event on February 9 at 5:30pm. This event will

feature a social hour with presentations and entertainment from various cultures, food tasting from around the world, music and more. On April 30, OMCAR will once again join the Chamber & Economic Partnership and the Marion County Building Industry Association to bring to you the 2016 Home, Garden & Lifestyle Expo at the College of Central Florida’s Ewers Center from 10am-3pm. Please look for more information on this event on our website. OMCAR wishes you a wonderful new year filled with abundance, joy and treasured moments. BUILDING A DISASTER PREPAREDNESS KIT N

ATURAL DISASTERS LIKE HURRICANES, FLOODS, TORNADOES AND EARTHQUAKES CAN BE UNPREDICTABLE. THAT’S WHY ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THE AMERICAN RED CROSS URGE PEOPLE TO PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME. YOU MAY HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN IN PLACE, SO EVERYONE IN YOUR FAMILY KNOWS WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO IF A DISASTER STRIKES. WHAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE IS A DISASTER PREPAREDNESS KIT.

In the event of an emergency, there often isn’t much time to search for or stock up on supplies. You can create your own disaster preparedness kit ahead of time with some basic household items.

WEATHER RADIO A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio broadcasts continuous weather information from the nearest national weather service and keeps you updated on potential weather-related issues that could arise.

NONPERISHABLE FOOD When disaster strikes, access to fresh, perishable foods and refrigeration may be limited, so it’s important to have nonperishable food items readily available. Such items include ready-to-eat canned foods, granola or fruit bars high in protein, dried fruit or vegetables, nuts and low sodium crackers. If you choose to include canned items in your kit, also remember to have a manual can opener handy.

FIRST AID SUPPLIES Basic first aid supplies should be accounted for, including adhesive bandages, compression bandages, tape, gauze, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes and rubber gloves. Pain relievers, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, are also good to have on hand.

FLASHLIGHT AND BATTERIES Power outages are a common result of natural disasters, and stumbling through darkness can be dangerous. Be prepared with a flashlight and usable batteries. Check your battery supply frequently.

hard surfaces and help prevent mold and mildew. In fact, Clorox has worked with the Red Cross for more than 40 years to donate bleach for recovery efforts following natural disasters. “Clorox is an invaluable partner to the American Red Cross,” said Trevor Riggen, regional chief executive officer, Red Cross Northern California Coastal Region. “Their donations help victims of disaster recover during the most difficult times.”

BLEACH After a natural disaster, water may not be safe to drink. If water supplies are compromised and you don’t have power to boil water, you can create potable water with a few drops of unscented disinfecting bleach, such as Clorox. It is also useful to have bleach on hand for cleanup, to disinfect

tournaments:

“Each tournament features some of our area’s finest golfers,” says Marion County Golf Association (MCGA) Chairman Ron Russo. “Competition is open to men and women with the only restriction being that you must be a Marion County resident. That is what makes this series of tournaments so unique and special. There are no outsiders involved… when you win one of these tournaments… you are the best golfer in Marion County in that age group. We invite all our local golfers to come out and compete. Everyone has a great time, and there is always a lot of thrilling golf action taking place.” All three tournaments are held under the auspices of the MCGA, and this exciting competition allows local golfers a chance to play on some of the area’s finest courses.

The Marion Masters

[

THE MARION MASTERS IS OPEN TO BOYS AND GIRLS AND MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL AGES. THIS YEAR’S EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY, JUNE 17 THROUGH 19, AND ALTHOUGH ALL AREA GOLFERS CAN APPLY TO ENTER THE TOURNAMENT, A QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT WILL BE PLAYED PRIOR TO THE MASTERS TO DETERMINE THE FINAL FIELD OF GOLFERS.

“This year’s qualifier will take place on Saturday, May 21, at the Pine Oaks of Ocala golf club,” says Russo. “The lowest 60 scores and any ties will qualify to compete in

the June Masters. There are a number of other players who have already qualified, but this qualifier allows any county resident to take part in the tournament.”

Tournament Directors Jim and Kay Yancey help organize the three-day event, which is held on a different area course each of the three days. “This year, the Masters will be played at three of our finest local courses: Country Club of Ocala, Stone Creek Golf Club and Ocala Golf Club,” says Jim. “This is a great event that includes some of the best golfers in Marion County, and it really gives our golfers a chance to play on some of the toughest courses the area has to offer. We have had some very notable winners, and there is a lot of prestige that goes into winning the Marion Masters.”

“Berger Warner, one of the area’s finest golfers has won the Masters twice, the Senior Masters four times and the Super Senior tournament twice. He is ranked by Golf Week Magazine as the No. 1 golfer over 65 years old in the country,” says Russo. “That gives you some idea of the caliber of golfers that can be found in this area. And what’s great is that any county resident can enter our tournaments, and everyone has an equal chance of winning.” Anyone who wants to participate in the qualifying tournament, or any of the Masters series of tournaments, can either pick up an entry form at any of the local golf clubs, go online at marioncountygolf.com and print one off or use the email contact form on the website to request one from the MCGA. Once you have the form in hand, just fill it out and mail it to Marion Masters, P.O. Box 1943, Ocala, FL, 34478. The deadline to enter the qualifier is Monday, May 16. The entry fee for the qualifier is $50, and for anyone who qualifies, there will be an additional $150 entry fee to compete in the Masters in June. “A very unique thing about this tournament is that anyone under 16 who qualifies, we pay their entry fee for the Masters through private funds donated into the Moot Thomas Amateur Golf Fund,” says Russo. “This is something special the MCGA utilized to help promote and help our young, up-and-coming golfers.” Gift certificates ranging in value from $400 for first place to $50 for the 25th place finisher will

be awarded. The gift certificates can be redeemed at the golf clubs participating in the tournament. Ocala resident Matt Giovannelli won last year’s Marion Masters, pulling away from the field after trailing by several strokes at the start of the tournament’s final day. “I was so pleased and proud to win the Masters,” he says. “I feel very fortunate and appreciative. It is a very prestigious tournament, and the competition is tough. It was one of the first tournaments where I just put my head down and played my own game… and it just all worked out. And it really helped that my wife and parents were there to support me all the way.” Giovanelli attended St. John Lutheran high school in Ocala and played college golf at Florida Atlantic University. He says that Marion County is a wonderful place to play with top-notch golf courses and outstanding competition. “It’s such a pleasure to have this arena provided for us so that we can all compete and unite together,” he says. “It’s a tradition that will be kept up and in place for a long, long time. The MCGA does an unbelievable job in making local golfers feel like we belong to our own small tour. And the local club professionals and directors of golf, course superintendents, maintenance crews—all those people behind the scenes who make all these tournaments possible—we owe them so much because they make this game we love possible. Ocala and Marion County is just a great place to play golf.”

The Marion Masters Seniors THE MARION MASTERS SENIORS TOURNAMENT IS SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 13 THROUGH 14 AND REQUIRES NO QUALIFYING FOR THE EVENT. THE TOURNAMENT IS OPEN TO ALL MEN AND WOMEN GOLFERS OVER THE AGE OF 50—BUT AS OF YET NO WOMEN HAVE ENTERED THE TOURNAMENT. THE TWO-DAY TOURNEY WILL TAKE PLACE AT OCALA GOLF CLUB AND PINE OAKS OF OCALA.

“THE SENIORS TOURNAMENT IS SPECIAL,” SAYS TOURNAMENT FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR MIKE MCGINNIS. “THE MARION MASTERS ALWAYS GAVE THE YOUNGER GUYS A CHANCE TO WIN, BUT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE NICE FOR THE SLIGHTLY OLDER CROWD TO HAVE A TOURNAMENT OF THEIR OWN. THIS UPCOMING TOURNAMENT WILL BE THE 18TH ANNUAL SENIOR MASTERS, AND I’M PROUD TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF IT. IT HAS BEEN A LABOR OF LOVE FOR MANY YEARS.” MCGINNIS SAYS THAT WHAT MAKES THE TOURNAMENT SO SPECIAL IS THAT ANYONE OF ANY AGE OVER 50 CAN WIN IT. IF YOU ARE 70 YEARS OLD AND HAVE THE LOWEST SCORE AT THE END OF THE TOURNAMENT, THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS YOURS. ALL PLAYERS WHO FINISH IN THE TOP HALF OF THE TOURNAMENT WIN GIFT CERTIFICATES TO THE TWO PARTICIPATING GOLF CLUBS. “THERE IS A NOMINAL FEE OF $70 TO ENTER, AND ENTRY FORMS NEED TO BE FILED AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE FIRST DAY OF THE TOURNAMENT,” SAYS MCGINNIS. “THE EVENT IS VERY POPULAR, AS WE DON’T SET THE COURSE UP TO BE DIFFICULT. EVERYONE TEES OFF FROM THE SAME MIDDLE TEES, AND THE FLAGS ARE SET UP FOR LOW SCORES. EVERYBODY HAS AN EQUAL SHOT,” HE SAYS. “AND THAT MAKES FOR SOME FUN GOLF.”

FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL JIM WILLIAMS III AT (352) 817-4172.

The Marion Masters Super Seniors THE SUPER SENIORS TOURNAMENT, SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 THROUGH 18 IS OPEN TO MEN AND WOMEN GOLFERS AGES 65 AND UP. THE TOURNAMENT IS DIVIDED INTO THREE SEPARATE AGE GROUPS: SUPER SENIORS, AGES 65 THROUGH 69, SILVER SENIORS, 70 THROUGH 74 AND GOLDEN SENIORS FOR GOLFERS MORE THAN 75 YEARS OF AGE. “This year’s two-day event will be held at the SummerGlen and Stone Creek golf courses,” says tournament director Jim Williams III. “This is a great event, and all golfers in these age groups are welcome to come out and participate, no matter what their skill level. Gift certificates from the two participating courses are awarded to the top half of the finishers in the field.” There are no qualifiers for this tournament, so any Marion County resident in these age groups is eligible to participate. There is a $75 entry fee, and forms should be filed at least one week prior to the tournament date.

[

Like the Seniors Masters tournament, Williams says the event has yet to have a woman competitor but would like to extend a welcome to all Marion women golfers who meet the age requirements to come out and participate. “Like all our Masters events, the women would have to compete from the same tees as the men, but what makes this type of tournament so great is that everyone has a chance to win,” Williams says. “There are some great players out here, but you don’t have to be a great player to play. We have a wide range of scores, but one thing Find Out More everybody has is a great time.” FOR MORE

OCALA GOLF

Local golfer Berger Warner, who has won eight of the different Masters tournaments, speaks volumes when he begins to talk about Ocala golf and this series of events. “I CAN’T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT GOLF IN OCALA AND MARION COUNTY,” HE SAYS. “THIS PLACE IS SIMPLY AN INCREDIBLE GOLF ENVIRONMENT THAT IS KNOWN FAR BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF THIS COUNTY. OCALA IS THE BEST GOLF TOWN IN OUR STATE, AND WINNING ANY EVENT HERE IS A SOURCE OF PRIDE. OCALA HAS A LONG TRADITION WHEN IT COMES TO THE GAME OF GOLF, AND THESE MASTERS TOURNAMENTS ARE A BIG PART OF THAT TRADITION.” BERGER BELIEVES THAT, LOCALLY, GOLF IS MORE THAN JUST A GAME; IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CROSS CULTURAL BARRIERS AND CHANGE LIVES. “IN OCALA, GOLF IS A SPORT, NOT A SOCIAL EVENT,” HE SAYS, THE PASSION EVIDENT IN HIS VOICE. “HERE, ALL GOLFERS ARE WELCOME NO MATTER WHAT GENDER, FINANCIAL STATUS, RACE… ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SHOW UP AT ANY LOCAL COURSE WITH THE DESIRE TO PLAY AND YOU FIND OTHER PLAYERS WILLING TO PLAY RIGHT ALONG BESIDE YOU. THIS SETS THIS AREA APART AND MAKES MARION COUNTY ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO PLAY IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.”

The good guys don’t always wear capes or white hats. In fact, most of the time, they don’t. There are a number of careers in which heroic deeds come with the territory. The people who aspire to these careers are dedicated, focused and driven to help others but don’t consider themselves heroes. When they save a life in the course of a day’s work, they’re the first ones to say, “I’m just doing my job.” American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.” We reached out to four local citizens whose jobs routinely put them in the position of such bravery. Here are their inspiring stories.

rowing up with a father and brother in the military special forces and an uncle who worked for Gainesville Fire Rescue, a life of service appealed to Jacqueline Nettles. A Florida native raised in Homestead, Nettles was a tomboy who did everything her brother did. “My mom has been the rock to our whole family. We have high-risk jobs and are adrenaline junkies; she always stays calm when most moms/wives would be a wreck, especially sending her husband and her son to war multiple times,” adds Nettles. For as long as Nettles can remember, she wanted to be a firefighter, even though there aren’t many women in the field. She attended EMT school and then enrolled at the fire college in Ocala. Having fallen in love with Ocala, she was thrilled to become a firefighter with Ocala Fire Rescue in 2007. “We have to have EMT certification to be a firefighter, but the paramedic training is optional. Paramedics have a higher level of medical knowledge than an EMT and are able to do more intricate work, such as running intravenous lines, reading EKGs and such. I went to paramedic school because I wanted to know I have the knowledge to do every single thing that can be done when we go on a call,” says Nettles, 36.

Her training was put to one of its greatest tests in December 2013, when called to a car accident in which a mother and her four children, ages 13 months to 9 years old, were trapped. Their car was stopped at a red light when it was rear-ended by another vehicle going approximately 50 miles per hour. The impact had so seriously damaged the compact car that it was impossible to open any doors. “It’s always challenging when children are involved,” says Nettles. “In this case, everyone in the car needed immediate treatment and had to be airlifted to hospitals for surgery.” But first, Nettles and her crewmates had to get the injured children and their mother out of the crushed car. This required calling for additional transport trucks to help with heavy extrication, a tedious process that required cutting off the front passenger door, the front seat and the back passenger door to reach the three children in the back seat. It took nearly an hour to get the last child free, as one of his legs was pinned under the seat. “The most difficult part of this case was the kids asking us over and over to help them, but it wasn’t that simple and it took time to get them out,” says Nettles. “Although the mother was also injured and in a lot of pain, she was the last one taken out of the car because her injuries were not as bad as the children’s. We always take the worst first.” One child was in a car seat; the other three were wearing seat belts. This was a blessing, as they would have been ejected from the vehicle otherwise, Nettles notes. “Everyone would have died without intervention, but the worst was the second boy we removed from the car, who was about 7 years old,” she recalls. “The impact pushed the car’s axle up into the back seat where he was sitting, shattering his pelvis and breaking both femurs. From just one femur fracture, you can lose up to three units of blood and he had two

femur fractures, plus the shattered pelvis, so he had significant internal blood loss and pain. It was a lifethreatening situation.” The young victim remained conscious the entire time as Nettles assessed his condition and ran IVs to replace lost fluids. He was placed on a backboard and both legs were immobilized to prevent further injury. The child was then airlifted by helicopter to Shands pediatric unit for emergency surgery. “He survived, but one of his siblings did not,” says Nettles. “I’m a mother myself so I can’t imagine seeing your kids being taken to separate hospitals and not being there when your child takes their last breath.” Although many people credit the paramedics and firefighters as being “brave,” Nettles doesn’t see it that way. “The brave ones are the families who stand back and let us do what we’re trained to do. I feel more adrenaline after an incident. During the event, it’s instinctual and the training takes over. We’re doing what we’ve practiced for every single day.”

ut of all the different fields of surgery, trauma surgery typified for me what it means to be a doctor,” says Darwin Ang, M.D., Ph.D., FACS, who has been a trauma surgeon since 2006 and at Ocala Regional Medical Center Health Trauma since 2012, where he is also trauma medical director. “It’s one of the few fields where you’re performing surgery that is absolutely needed. You’re offering people hope all the time. Hope is a very powerful, intangible force, and it’s nice to be able to offer that. It’s hard to say you can do that with other jobs.”

“IT’S ONE OF THE FEW FIELDS WHERE YOU’RE PERFORMING SURGERY THAT IS ABSOLUTELY NEEDED. YOU’RE OFFERING PEOPLE HOPE ALL THE TIME.”

Still, some cases stand out simply because the odds are stacked so strongly against the patient. That was the scenario in the spring of 2014 when Ang was finishing up an operation on a perforated stomach ulcer and heard the trauma alert. Something told him this was going to be more than a regular motor vehicle accident. “We are a close-knit group of five surgeons who work together. My colleague, Dr. Jason Farrah, stabilized the patient, a woman in her 50s, until I got there and was resuscitating her when I came into the trauma room,” says Ang. “She was the sole survivor of a head-on vehicle collision; everyone else died at the scene. The moment I walked in, she lost her vital signs. “We started chest compressions, CPR and IV epinephrine. We were already giving her blood and her airway was intubated, but she had no vital signs. Her pupils were fixed and dilated; she was basically dead. After we had been working on her for 14 minutes, Dr. Farrah looked at me and said, ‘What do you think about opening her chest and doing manual heart massage and clamping her aorta?’” There was no way to know if that final desperate measure would work, but Ang made the decision to try. With the patient’s chest opened, Ang immediately opened the pericardium (the sack around the heart) and discovered her heart was compressed down to the size of a walnut because of all the pressure from internal bleeding. In addition, there was a hole in the heart, which had ruptured. Farrah clamped the aorta, while Ang massaged the heart. “Miraculously, her vitals came back within five to 10 minutes of opening her chest,” says Ang. “She was down for nearly 30 minutes. We took her back to the OR, fixed the hole in her heart and brought her to ICU.” The patient was hospitalized for over two months. Multiple surgeries were required, as she had—in addition to the injury to her heart—a ruptured bladder, ruptured spleen, fractured ankle and fractured pelvis. L-R: Dr. Ang and Dr. Farrah “That kind of force from a collision traveling through the body is usually not survivable,” notes Ang. “Later, we did research to find the statistics of people surviving cardiac rupture, and they are very low, less than 5 percent. We found no recorded survivors of anyone surviving a blunt cardiac rupture with emergency thoracotomy A Florida native who hails from Tallahassee, Ang, 43, is also (incision into the chest wall). Although she’s only 5 feet 5 inches tall and 130 pounds “soaking wet,” the panicked man draped his arm across her shoulder and she managed to get him over to a car he could lean against for support. “On first glance at his leg from the front, I thought the gunshot wound was a ‘through and through’ (where the bullet enters and exits), but I wasn’t sure. I was trying to calm him down, watch his vital signs and render first aid,” says Mangum, who pulled out her pocket knife to cut away the man’s shorts so she could bandage the wound in an effort to stop the bleeding. It was then that she got a good look at the back of his calf where the bullet had exited. “It looked like someone had taken a meat cleaver to it,” says Mangum, who was concerned because of the amount of blood, which continued to soak through the gauze she wrapped around the wound. “There was a lot of blood. Another officer came up and helped me lift the man’s leg so I could apply a tourniquet. The injured man was begging me to help him and was starting to go into shock. At that point, my goal was just to make sure he didn’t bleed so much that he died. “You revert back to your training in a situation like that. I can’t take individual credit for saving him,” notes Mangum, whose uniform and gear were covered with blood from the man’s injured leg. “Everyone worked rowing up in Weirsdale, Rachel Mangum always had an together; it was a group effort. A paramedic for 20 years and a firefighter for 15, Hickman has had his share of saves, but one of his most memorable rescues took place in 2001, not long after he joined the fire service. Hickman and crew got the call to respond to a night house fire in Ocala. Upon arriving, they learned that not only were there two people in the house, but both were elderly and confined to wheelchairs.

Other firefighters worked desperately to battle the fire before it could overtake the victims and the firefighters trying to extricate them from the burning house. “We found the people in their bedrooms, but both of them were overcome by smoke and unresponsive,” says Hickman. “The flames were visible over our heads as we removed both victims from the house. 1

Rinse your hair. One teaspoon honey plus one quart water equals super shiny, frizz-free hair. Honey is a humectant and perfect for adding moisture to hair and skin. After shampooing and conditioning normally, pour the mixture over your hair and let dry, and then style as usual.

2

Replace Neosporin. Save some money, honey. Instead of buying a special ointment, use the honey you already have on small scrapes or scratches. It’s antibacterial, antimicrobial and a natural antiseptic. And it certainly smells better than any first aid cream on the market.

3

Use it like lip balm. Burt’s Bees were really on to something. All you need to make an awesome, customizable lip balm is a base of honey and beeswax. Recipes are available online, so give

4

Use it instead of energy drinks and bars. Ditch sugary, over-caffeinated supplements before your workout and down a tablespoon of honey. It has been scientifically proven to give athletes (and normal people at the gym) a natural performance boost.

5

Fight hangovers. Honey is full of fructose, which is helpful in metabolizing alcohol more quickly. Put some helpful honey on your toast or in some hot tea and wait out the suffering.

6

Eliminate parasites. Fallen victim to internal parasites or worms? Pesky bugs can be killed and expelled using a mixture of vinegar, water and honey. Of course, always ask your doctor before trying a home remedy to see if it is dangerous or will interfere with other treatments.

7

Moisturize dry skin. A quick Pinterest search will yield tons of recipes for DIY facial masks using honey to moisturize. It can also be added to a warm bath. For full effect, spread honey onto dry patches of skin after a warm shower and let sit for 30 minutes before rinsing.

8

Nibble on some honeycomb. Honeycomb isn’t as sturdy as it looks, and it can help lower bad cholesterol and protect the liver. It’s also home to the purest, most flavorful honey. It’s easy to spread on biscuits or bread, or you can wow guests by placing some honeycomb in the middle of a cheese plate. (It complements cheddar and brie well.)

9

Slim down. Honey is the perfect substitute for sugar and is known to speed up metabolism. It could help you shake a pound or two in the long run.

10

Try honey cleansing. Tired of slathering commercial face washes on each night when you know they’re full of mysterious chemicals? Try moistening the face with warm water and applying honey all over. Allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse—it’s said to moisturize while fighting breakouts and wrinkles!

CALA IS BURSTING WITH TALENTED VISUAL ARTISTS AND ART ENTHUSIASTS. YET, UP UNTIL NOW, A COLLABORATIVE HUB FOR UP-AND-COMING TALENT, SEASONED VETERANS AND ART AFICIONADOS HAS BEEN MISSING. BUT THANKS TO SOME FORWARD-THINKING INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES AND DONORS, OCALA IS SOON TO INTRODUCE THE FIRST ART INCUBATOR OF ITS KIND IN OUR COMMUNITY. The Magnolia Art Xchange will bring a new level of cultural presence to Ocala.

Artists’ studios will house resident and visiting artists alike, and communal spaces will be a melting pot for artists to blend their ideas. President of MAX Matthew Fischer notes how this new endeavor is vital for preserving the current artistic community and fostering new talent. “We’ve recognized a need for something like this for a long time, and now, we are finally in the process of creating this cultural hub,” he says. Along with offering a creative working environment, MAX will also provide the tools and training necessary for artists to build a unique and professional portfolio. Further, MAX will introduce the community to the artist sector by inviting citizens to the studios, where they can watch the artists work firsthand. Workshops, presentations and events will also be held regularly. Ocala Union Station will be the home to MAX’s many studios, classrooms and galleries. Fundraising is underway to restore this historic site, yet the support of the community is still needed. For those interested in learning more, an open house will be held at Ocala Union Station (531 NE 1st Avenue) on January 12 at 12pm.

FIND OUT MORE >

Want to help get MAX off the ground? Volunteers are needed in several capacities, from selling tickets at the door to priming walls for mural paintings. Stop by the MAX booth at the First Friday Art Walks for more information on upcoming fundraising events and ways to get involved. Visit maxocala.org for more information.

SHE, ALONG WITH CO-FOUNDER JENNIFER LEGGE, HAVE SPENT THE LAST FEW MONTHS ORGANIZING A CENTRAL EVENT AS A RESOURCE CENTER FOR NEW, CURRENT AND EXPECTING MOMS. The first

annual Bump, Baby and Beyond Expo is slated for January 30 at the Klein Center at the College of Central Florida and is the first event of its kind in our area. Although busy finalizing all the details, Jessica took some time to fill us in on the the gist of this first-time event.

What is the Bump, Baby and Beyond Expo?

Did you think other mothers felt the same as you?

Are there a lot of resources available to moms in Ocala?

Essentially, we want this to be a first resource for moms, a place where they can go and ask all the questions they need, meet with specialists and vendors and get support from other moms, too.

There are tons! But people aren’t aware of them all. When I first started pitching the idea to area vendors, I had 30 sign up in 72 hours. Now we are up to 65.

I had my first child in Atlanta, Georgia, and there were so many options for me to meet with mother groups and have access to resources. When I moved back to Ocala, I had a really hard time finding that same support.

Definitely. I work in a chiropractor’s office and hear pregnant patients asking questions all of the time. But doctors only have so much time to spend with a patient. We need a resource or a place for moms to go and get the support they need through the long haul.

The first annual Bump, Baby and Beyond Expo will be held at the Klein Center at the College of Central Florida from 10am-4pm. Tickets are $5 for adults, and proceeds benefit Royal Family Kids and Kimberly’s Center for Child Protection. Kids’ admission is free. For more information, visit the Bump, Baby and Beyond Facebook page.

How did you come up with this idea?

JAN’16 ocalastyle.com

We’ll have doctors and OBGYNs but also midwives. There will be demonstrations from groups like Le Leche League as well as chiropractors, massage therapists and more. Basically, we want to have something for everyone. We’ll have a kids’ area, and dads are encouraged to come, too!

What kinds of vendors will be at the expo? We are trying to take a very well-rounded and holistic approach, and we want all avenues of child-raising covered.

THESOCIALSCENE

STEPPING UP FRONT AND CENTER FOR HOSPICE THE IVY HOUSE

BY RONALD W. WETHERINGTON, SOCIAL SCENE EDITOR OCALA STYLE MAGAZINE

T

AKE YOUR IMAGINATION BACK IN TIME TO A VICTORIAN ERA WHEN LADIES GOT ALL GUSSIED UP, COMPLETE WITH WHALE BONE CORSETS, FINE LACE, FEATHERS AND HATS. SUCH WAS THE SCENE ONE FALL NIGHT AT THE IVY HOUSE AS SPONSOR OCALA STYLE MAGAZINE AND OTHERS RAISED MUCH-NEEDED FUNDS FOR HOSPICE OF MARION COUNTY. ALL PROCEEDS FROM BAR RECEIPTS, SERVER TIPS AND 10 PERCENT OF MERCHANT SALES WENT TO BENEFIT THE MARION COUNTY HOSPICE CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS. MORE THAN $15,000 WAS RAISED.

Over 150 guests sampled a cornucopia of appetizers while being musically serenaded by a classical trio from the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. Dancers from the Marion Ballet Theatre also entertained the crowd. The Ivy House, co-owned by EVELYN NUSSEL and WAICA HUGGINS, went all out with their lavish dinner, served on goldrimmed China plates. Guests enjoyed Cornish game hens, corn bread dressing, green beans, orange glazed sweet potato, fresh garden salad and rich desserts served in teacups. The Ivy House is a historic 1890 Victorian house and restaurant located on Silver Springs Boulevard near downtown. For the Hospice event, Nussel and Huggins erected a snow white tent with a real crystal chandelier for their guests. Many in attendance wore period clothing, and the award for best hat went to SUSAN HALE. The best couple award went to GINNY AND BILL ALLEN, and best costume was taken home by KANDI CROSSEN. The evening’s speakers and dinner were followed by dancing. One remarkable speaker was REBECCA ROGERS who, as the Major Gifts/ Planned Giving Officer, gave “The Hospice

Story.” During her remarks, Rebecca shared a touching example: “Sam is 15 years old and on our pediatric hospice service. He was abandoned by his parents, so he’s been raised by his grandparents who live in the Ocala National Forest. Their trailer isn’t in good shape. In fact, the only door was barely hanging on and could not be locked. Sam was terrified someone would break in and cause him and his grandparents harm. A new door with installation was $400. One of our Hospice social workers asked our Philanthropy Department if there was a donation to help Sam. The answer to that question is always ‘yes!’ The door was purchased and installed.” Nussel spoke for many when she observed, “The Ivy House was honored to host this event again this year. Hospice of Marion County cared for our family, just as it has for others for more than 30 years. We are delighted to give back to the community for supporting our business.” KAREN HAVEN, Annual Gifts and Events Officer for Hospice of Marion County, was quite right when she stated, “The generosity of individual donors, increased number of sponsors and twice as many guests helped make this year’s event a great success. This event grows each year!”
