PHOENIX CHINESE WEEK 2020: YEAR OF THE RAT 4718

WELCOME! The Phoenix Chinese Week Committee, in cooperation with City of Phoenix, the Phoenix Sister Cities, Inc. and the Phoenix Sister Cities Chengdu and Taipei Committees, is proud to present PHOENIX CHINESE WEEK 2020, a series of cultural, social and educational events highlighting the diverse heritage of an ancient culture with 5,000 years of history. Phoenix Chinese Week 2020 events will be from Feb. 7 to Feb. 15. Now in its 30th year, everyone is welcome to attend and participate in our many festive and enriching activities. Phoenix Chinese Week is highlighted by a three-day Culture and Cuisine Festival (Feb. 7, 8 and 9) featuring a Children's Pavilion and concluding with a Chinese New Year Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 15

YEAR OF THE RAT in the Chinese calendar begins on Jan. 25, 2020. In the 12 year cycle of animals, the RAT is the 1st animal in the Chinese Zodiac. The RAT has the characteristics of an animal with spirit, wit, alertness, flexibility and vitality. People born in the year of the RAT are instinctive, acute and alert which make them brilliant businessmen, artists, teachers, authors and doctors. They are best matched with the Ox, Dragon or Monkey. RAT is not compatible with the Horse or Rooster.

OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING CEREMONY

FRIDAY, Feb. 7 - NOON

The Phoenix Chinese Week Committee along with Phoenix Sister Cities, Inc., the Phoenix Sister Cities Chengdu and Taipei Committees, officials, and dignitaries will kick off the Phoenix Chinese Week 2020 Culture and Cuisine Festival. The ceremonies will feature traditional performances and entertainment.

SPECIAL KOI FISH EXHIBIT

FRIDAY, FEB. 7 - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. / SATURDAY, FEB. 8 - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. / SUNDAY, FEB. 9 - 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Phoenix Valley of the Sun Koi Club will conduct its annual Koi Exhibit during the Phoenix Chinese Week Festival. Beginning with limited fish on Friday, the main Koi Exhibit events will be on Saturday and Sunday. See hundreds of award winning Koi fish as well as a Koi Equipment Trade Show. The Valley of the Sun Koi Club will be providing Koi education and history of the Koi from Friday through Sunday.

GIANT GOLDEN PANDA STATUE

Visit the bronze statue of the Mama Panda cuddling her cub.  This statue was a gift from the City of Chengdu, Sichuan, People's Republic of China presented to the city of Phoenix in honor of the Sister City relationship.  In 1996 the statue was put on permanent display at Margaret T. Hance Park.  It is located in the southeast edge of the park, near Third Street and Moreland.

Experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of the 30th annual Phoenix Chinese Week's Culture and Cuisine Festival.  Enjoy continuous entertainment including the lion dance, martial arts demonstrations, folk and traditional dances, musical performances and taste delicious Chinese food.  Admission is free and the event is open to the public.  For more information, visit www.phoenixchineseweek.org

THE FESTIVAL INCLUDES:

CHILDREN'S PAVILION

FRIDAY - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. / SATURDAY & SUNDAY-10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Children's Pavilion provides free children's cultural projects.  Demonstrations of Chinese calligraphy with translating English names into Chinese, paper folding, folk art, paper cutting and other arts and crafts.  Children of all ages can enjoy the cultural and fun hands-on activities.

FOOD PAVILION

FRIDAY - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. / SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A variety of delicious and authentic Chinese cuisine is available throughout the festival.  Additional varieties of food will be available.

BEER GARDEN

SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

TAIPEI DRAGON BOAT DISPLAY

FRIDAY - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. / SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A traditional dragon boat for races at the mid-summer Duan Wu Festival will be displayed. Dragon boat racing, a Chinese tradition dating back 23 centuries, was to honor the poet and patriot Qu Yuan.  This dragon boat is a gift from the City of Taipei, Taiwan to the city of Phoenix in honor of the historic friendship between the people of both cities developed through a Sister City relationship that spans over 40 years.

CHINESE CULTURAL VILLAGE:  CHINESE CULTURE AND HISTORY BOOTH

FRIDAY - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. / SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

See 5,000 years of Chinese culture on display. Learn how to use the abacus to solve mathematical problems. Discover other inventions, including printing blocks, kites, compasses, and more. Pictures, Chinese puppets, tangrams and other Chinese inventions will be exhibited. Cooking demonstrations at various times. Intricate carving demonstrations of fruits and vegetables by artist Shirley Chiu at various times.

CHINESE PAPER CUT EXHIBITION

FRIDAY - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. / SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Exquisite paper cut art exhibit of late renowned Chinese master folk artist Jianli Cheng from Fuyang, Anhui Province, China whose award-winning work was recognized by UNESCO. See paper cut demonstrations, then try your hand at the craft of paper cutting and create your own art piece.

CHINESE COSTUME PHOTO BOOTH

SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Transform into an Imperial prince or princess!  Take the ultimate selfie, friends or family portrait in full traditional Chinese costume with props. Four-legged friends welcome.  

MAHJONG BOOTH

SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

See the art of mahjong tiles as you watch demonstrations and have an opportunity to try your hand at this game - a traditional past-time of young and old especially at Chinese New Year.

CHOPSTICK CHALLENGE

FRIDAY - 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. / SATURDAY & SUNDAY - 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Chopsticks are useful for eating and cooking, but you can have fun with them too! Learn how to hold chopsticks, then try your skill to win a prize.

PHOTO EXHIBIT AND STUDENT ART DISPLAYS

Photos feature the Phoenix-area Chinese American community from the past to the present.   A special highlight will be artwork from the Phoenix Chinese Week 2020 Student Art Contest.

PHOENIX CHINESE WEEK TABLE TENNIS OPEN

SUNDAY, MAR. 29 - 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.- ARCH GYM - Phoenix Table Tennis Club - 1550 W. Colter St., Phoenix, 85015

This annual tournament (including singles, doubles, team & juniors at different levels) is open to the public. The registration fee is $12 per event. Entry deadline is Feb. 5, 2020. 2020 PHOENIX CHINESE WEEK TAIJI TOURNAMENT

SUNDAY, FEB. 9 - 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

BURTON BARR PUBLIC LIBRARY-  Pulliam Auditorium 1st Floor  - 1221 N. Central Ave., Phoenix 85004

Registration at 1 p.m. on site. The tournament is open to the public. Entry fee: $5 per competitor per event. Competition starts at the Pulliam Auditorium at 1p.m. There are five events: 01 - Taijiquan Solo, men; 02 - Taijiquan Solo, women; 03 - Taiji Sword, men; 04 - Taiji Sword, women; 05 - Group Taijiquan/Taiji Weapons, (three to six person groups). *NOTE - Forms competition only; time limit is four to eight minutes. 2020 PHOENIX CHINESE WEEK WEIQI/ GO OPEN

SATURDAY, FEB. 15 - 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.- DESERT SKY GAMES, 3875 W. Ray Road, Suite #7, Chandler, 85226

Registration starts at 11 a.m on site. The tournament is open to the public. Registration is free. All games will be played according to AGA (American Go Association) rules. The tournament will adapt the partial circulation method for the games. Three rounds will be played. There will be four divisions: (A) 2d and above, (B) 3k-1d, (C) 8k-4k and (D) 9k and below. There will be a handicap for some games. Three winners will be determined for each division.
