Particularly after hearing Jerry Goldsmith's fairly uninspired score for "Star Trek: First Contact," I would have to rate this as one of his absolute best scores for a Star Trek movie. It's sad that it had to be wasted on the mediocrity that was Star Trek V, but perhaps it wasn't wasted at all: the music is most of the reason I watched said movie more than once. From the soaring rearrangement of his theme from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" (which hadn't yet been overused when it appeared here), to the freedom of new possibilities expressed in "The Mountain," to the ethereal beauty of "A Busy Man," Goldsmith delivers yet another score that bridges the impossible gap between perfectly complementing the film in question and being solid symphonic music in its own right--and widely varied symphonic music at that. Particularly notable is the tension-charged "Without Help," which pulsates under Kirk and Co.'s quest to get back to the Enterprise under the threat of imminent Klingon attack, and imbues the whole scene with a very real sense of danger. The best part of this score is the way Goldsmith skillfully reuses and varies themes to musically tie together the various plot threads the film presents--far from being repetitious, his musical ideas help advance the film's storyline (such as it is). This is a film score any Trekker should add to his or her collection; if you can forget the thoroughly mediocre film it was attached to, this CD represents one of the best Star Trek movie soundtracks to date, and a worthy collection of music in general.

Comments on "Star Trek V" as a film notwithstanding (I personally thought it was okay), we've all come to expect great things from Jerry Goldsmith, one of the most gifted and prolific composers of film music between the 1960s and the 1990s. As with "The Final Conflict," he created a magnificent, very nearly epic score that raised the quality of the entire movie (seriously-- imagine "Omen III" with tacky synth-pop or John Carpenter piano scales). While this soundtrack CD omits quite a lot of this incredible composition (most notably the sequence where Sybok's army stormed Paradise City early in the picture, which had a thrilling underscore that isn't found on the disc) the sound quality is absolutely astonishing and what little work is presented is simply perfect. One exception: track 10, "The Moon's a Window to Heaven," a pop recording by Hiroshima of the song Uhura sings (?) during the "fan dance" scene. John Bettis' lyrics are regrettably cheesy and it's just the kind of late-80s musical excess that makes me glad I was born in the 90s. Why it's included is completely beyond me (but notice the Yellowjackets' goofy, anachronistic jazz selections on the "ST4" soundtrack). All things considered, this album is a must-own for Goldsmith fans, movie music fans, and Star Trek fans. And the price is extremely appealing.

Star Trek V the final frontier (1989) has a wonderful soundtrack! The music is produced by Jerry Goldsmith! Jerry Goldsmith did the music for Star Trek the motion picture(1979)! I recommend this soundtrack CD because it is very good. Star Trek V is very under rated and the soundtrack is is also under rated! Please give this Star Trek V CD a chance! It is better than you think! A+ I highly recommend it!

I had heard this music on cassette but had never found it in stores on CD. Amazon was the only place that allowed me to get this beautiful soundtrack. The seller was extremely fast in sending and CD arrived in perfect condition

Only features 10 tracks from the movie, picking the best of them. All tracks play beautifully. Only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that there's a large number of tracks in the film that this soundtrack doesn't cover. But this features the bigger ones, including the song "The Moon's a Window to Heaven" which I had no idea could be obtained as a separate song until now.

The CD arrived on time and played fantastically! Goldsmith was an amazing composer and with the exception of the hoaky "Disco" song on the end, this score does not disappoint!

Gran Banda Sonora

Nothing could ever best Maestro Jerry Goldsmith's 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' original music score. But his soundtrack for 'V:The Final Frontier' is one of the best of his 5 Star Trek scores. Highlights include 'The Mountain' and 'God's A Busy Man'.

I bought this because I am a Star Trek fan. It is available on VINYL (I am sure that I saw it somewhere) but until I find the record, it will do.
