Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery arrives next week on Blu-ray, DVD, and Steelbook. The set includes over two hours of special features, including a number of deleted scenes. TrekMovie has one of those deleted scenes as an exclusive preview for the set.
Deleted scene from “Terra Firma, Part 1”
The following scene is set in sickbay between Michael Burnham and Dr. Culber as they discuss how to deal with Georgiou’s deteriorating condition.
You may recognize some of the dialogue, from the scene because the audio from part of Culber’s exposition was lifted and inserted into a different scene that took place later with Burnham, Culber, Vance, and Saru.
Disco S3 arrives July 20 on Blu-ray, Steelbook and DVD
The thirteen-episode third season of Discovery jumped the show into a whole new era with new characters and a whole new galactic crisis to deal with. The home video release features over two hours of special features:

- BEING MICHAEL BURNHAM (Exclusive) – Sonequa Martin-Green takes fans on her season-long journey as Michael Burnham with her personal record of the season and this beloved character.
- KENNETH MITCHELL: TO BOLDLY GO – Traditionally the man behind the mask in Discovery, Kenneth Mitchell is unveiled as Aurellio in the third season. Featuring cast and crew interviews, this emotional and intimate look touches on Kenneth’s life with ALS. With its first discussion of this on camera, the featurette highlights how Kenneth’s wheelchair was included for his on-screen character, his own take on the various roles he played in Discovery, and what those roles mean to the show.
- BRIDGE BUILDING – Fans have been intrigued by the starship Discovery’s bridge crew for three seasons. Now, they can immerse themselves in all things crew-related in this behind-the-scenes look showcasing the characters and actors who bring them to life each week.
- WRITER’S LOG: MICHELLE PARADISE (Exclusive) – Showrunner Michelle Paradise provides a personal log about shooting the beginning of season three in Iceland.

After our article was posted Discovery editor Chad Rubel weighed in on Twitter about the scene pointing to the work of assistant editor Darren Hallihan. Rubel also answered a question as to why it was cut, saying, “[T]he episode really picked up speed once they got off the planet. So we were looking for ways to get to that moment quicker.”

OMG…I’m so mad we didn’t get this scene until now. Fantastic Burnham / Culber character and relationship moment.
I agree, the show needs more scenes that are just this, dialogue, calm dialogue with no blaring music or effects, just dialogue
I also love the relationship between Hugh and Michael. So this is everything I’ve been looking for from the writers. More of this please (praying to the writer’s room deities)
Absolutely, agree that conversations like this are crucial to grounding the show.
The dialogue could have been tightened a touch in the middle before shooting if length is a concern, but instead an entire scene is cut because hard decisions weren’t made in the writers room.
That said, for a streaming show that can be as long as it wants to be, too many S3 episodes were hardly longer than broadcast length. I don’t see the point of that kind of editing.
I totally agree with this. Just keep in mind, however, that Star Trek: Discovery does air on TV in some parts of the world and even CBS aired the first season on broadcast during the early part of the pandemic as many other TV productions had shut down.
But having said that, there were some episodes that ran a bit longer than normal broadcast duration; Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 being one of them.
Why this scene was deleted!? Scenes like this one, make the episode more coherent.
