I was surprised they did not wear plastic gloves in the bakery. Perhaps the story took place before it was required?
Simple, well-written and well acted story. Worthwhile. No computer graphics. No aliens. No crashing cars. No blood and gore. What's not to like?

Martin Ritt, est l'un des grands maîtres du cinéma américain capable de vous montrer les difficultés des travailleurs pauvres aux Etats-Unis (ici en Nouvelle Angleterre) sans manichéisme et sans pathos. Tout sonne juste et vrai.
En plus, au travers de ce film il met en scène un sujet rarement abordé au cinéma: l'analphabétisme chez les adultes. Il le fait avec infiniment de réalisme et de pudeur.
Stanley et Iris est une superbe histoire d'amour et d'humanisme qui ne fait jamais dans le mélodramatique et qui démontre que parfois la volonté des hommes et des femmes suffit pour s'affranchir de bien des souffrances. Pour cela il faut beaucoup de caractère et d'amour.
Jane Fonda et Robert de Niro sont magnifiques.
Ce dernier film réalisé par Martin Ritt est une réussite.
