What is Spybot?

Spybot – Search & Destroy (abbreviated Spybot-S&D) is a proprietary anti-spyware program for Windows. In addition to removing numerous common spyware and adware, it also has some extra handy features. One of these is the ability to remove your data traces following the use of recent files and web pages, and another is the ability to manage the programs automatically started when the Windows is booted.

The program is free of charge in the basic version for private use. If you like the software and it helps you, which we are sure it does, the donate here using this link. Companies and institutions have to purchase an annual license, which is subject to a fee. As of version 2.0.12, home users can also purchase a license that unlocks additional functions. As of version 2.1, the payment versions have the addition „+AV“ in the product name and include an additional antivirus protection based on the Bitdefender engine.

The „Spybot – Search & Destroy“ program scans your Windows installation for spyware at the touch of a button. If Spybot finds suspicious software on your PC, it can remove the parts responsible for advertising and spying without affecting the proper functioning of the program. Immunizations and quarantine functions provide additional security.

Another feature of Spybot is the removal of „traces of use“, which makes it harder for undetected spies to find information at all. For example, you can remove the lists of recently visited web pages, opened files, started programs or cookies.

For beginners there is an Easy Mode, professionals can use the Advanced Mode with additional tools and settings.

Spybot Free Edition is a classic antispyware and anti-malware tool. It can detect and remove most infections and actively protect and repair the registry. It can delete your surfing traces and protect you from persistent cookies. (Tracking Cookies)

Please deactivate your antivirus program for the time of installation. This is necessary because many of the current antivirus programs acknowledge the installation of Spybot S&D with a false alarm or block it directly. However, since Spybot must be able to scan and clean your computer up to root level for you, we have to intervene very deeply in the registry during installation.

You don’t have to turn off your firewall unless Spybot S&D wants to download current updates from the network. In this case you must allow Spybot S&D access to the Internet in your firewall.

Updates are released at least once a week. In case of very bad, current infections 2-3 times a week.

Installation Manual

1. Click on Run

2. Select your language

3. Click „Next“

4. Select how you want to use Spybot S&D

5. Select if you want Spybot to do everything automatically

Or whether you want to configure it yourself. We recommend that Spybot does everything for you.

6. Read the agreement and click on „Next“

7. Select where you want to install Spybot

We recommend: Leave everything as it is. That’s the spirit.

8. Select the options and click „Finish“

9. Spybot must now download the latest updates

Click on „Update“.
Note: In rare cases (depending on the infection) it may happen that Spybot does not complete the update process. Close the program and restart your computer. Then restart the program and click on Update.

10. Your Spybot Software is now up to date

11. Now you can either do a system scan or a rootkit scan

If you do not see the icon with the Rootkit scan, switch to the Advanced-User Mode in the lower left corner.

12. Spybot has made a brief analysis for you

Now delete the temporary Internet files (see 1.) and start the scan. (See 2.)
Attention: Depending on the system and the degree of infection, a scan can take several hours.

13. Spybot will now list everything it has found on your computer

Select which malware threats you want to delete from your computer. Sometimes Spybot also asks you to restart.
