Spot is tied at No. 2 in our Best Pet Insurance Companies rating. Spot’s Accident & Illness plan covers essentials such as vet exams, diagnostic tests, and prescriptions. In addition, Spot allows pet owners to choose between two levels of preventive coverage, Gold and Platinum, for an extra $9.95 or $24.95 per month, respectively.
Owners who insure their pet with Spot have numerous options for a deductible, ranging from $100 to $1,000, as well as options for annual benefit limits ranging from $2,500 to unlimited. Another advantage of Spot Pet Insurance is that there is no upper-age limit for coverage or enrollment, although the pet cannot be enrolled until they are 8 weeks old.
Like most of the pet insurance providers we analyzed, exotic pets are not covered. And Spot’s discount options are limited, though there is a 10% discount for owners who insure more than one pet.
Spot offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on its policies, and customers have access to a 24/7 pet telehealth helpline.
Spot Pet Insurance can be a good option for dog and cat owners who want to choose from several types of coverage. Spot offers comprehensive preventative care coverage add-ons for owners who want extra peace of mind, as well as basic accident-only coverage for owners who want to keep their premiums down but still have coverage for expensive injuries.
While Spot doesn’t offer a large number of discounts, pet owners who insure more than one pet can receive a 10% discount.
Spot sells pet insurance policies for dogs and cats and provides multiple coverage options. You can choose from accident-and-illness coverage, which is the most comprehensive option, or an accident-only plan, which has a lower premium but doesn’t cover illness-related vet care.
Spot’s accident-and-illness plan covers a variety of essentials, such as examinations, microchip implantation, cancer treatment, surgeries, diagnostic tests, and even alternative therapies such as acupuncture and chiropractic care. This plan can also apply to cancer and growths, hereditary conditions, behavioral issues, dental illnesses, digestive illnesses, hip dysplasia, infections, and more.
Spot’s accident-only plan covers such things as surgery and hospitalization due to accidents, such as broken bones, toxic ingestion, cuts, and swallowed objects. It can help to cover care your pet may need in the face of an unexpected injury, including diagnostic testing (like MRIs or X-rays), IV fluids and medications, tooth extractions, medical supplies like bandages, and poison control consultations.
Spot offers two levels of optional wellness coverage – Gold, which starts at $9.95 per month, and Platinum, starting at $24.95 per month. These preventive care plans differ in the services they cover and their reimbursement amounts. In most cases, the plans reimburse part or most of the cost of the covered services.
The Gold plan provides a total annual benefit of $250 for vet services like dental cleanings, annual wellness exams, deworming, fecal tests, and some vaccines or titers.
The Platinum plan provides a total annual benefit of $450. In addition to everything in the Gold plan (except for dental cleaning), it also reimburses for blood tests, urinalyses, spaying or neutering, flea and heartworm prevention, health certificates, and other tests and procedures. Since the Platinum plan includes reimbursement for spaying or neutering, it may be a good option for kitten and puppy owners.
There is no waiting period for the coverage provided by these preventive-care add-ons.
Like most pet insurance companies, Spot Pet Insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. If your pet has symptoms of an injury or illness before your coverage starts or during the waiting period, that injury or disease is considered pre-existing, even if there hasn’t been an official diagnosis yet.
Unlike many insurers, Spot will consider if a pre-existing condition is curable or incurable. If your pet’s pre-existing condition is curable (like vomiting, diarrhea, or an infection) and your pet has been free of symptoms for 180 days, Spot will cover that condition in the future. This does not apply to knee or ligament conditions that occur before your coverage takes effect or during a waiting period – these will not be covered.
Other issues and treatments excluded from Spot’s coverage include:
Spot’s sample rate for dogs is $38.73 per month, and for cats it’s $17.18 per month. Those are third-highest among the pet insurers in our rating, or about $12 and $5 more, respectively, than the No. 1 pet insurance provider in our rating, Pets Best.
Our sample rates for dogs are based on a healthy 1-year-old large female mixed-breed dog living in Texas. Sample cat insurance costs are based on a healthy male domestic medium-hair under the age of 1 that resides in Texas.

Embrace is tied with Spot for the No. 2 spot in our 2024 rating of the best pet insurance companies. Like Spot, Embrace’s policies cover many essentials, such as vet exams, prescriptions, emergency service, and hospitalizations. Embrace’s sample monthly premiums for cats and dogs are roughly $5 to $9 lower, respectively, than Spot’s.
Embrace also offers an accident-only plan, but unlike Spot’s, Embrace's accident-only plan does not offer different options for deductibles, reimbursement rates, and annual limits. It has a $100 deductible, a 90% reimbursement rate, and a $5,000 annual coverage limit.
In terms of optional preventive-care coverage, Spot offers two packages, Gold and Platinum, that provide annual benefits of $250 and $450, respectively. Embrace’s Wellness Rewards plan offers three annual benefit levels ranging from $250 to $650.

Spot offers two preventative care plans that cover some wellness expenses. The Gold Package costs an additional $9.95 per month and the Platinum Package is $24.95 per month.
Spot doesn’t cover preexisting conditions for pets. The company considers any symptoms related to an illness or accident that began prior to the pet’s enrollment in the insurance plan or during the policy’s waiting period to be pre-existing.
If, however, your pet hasn’t shown any signs of a previous condition for at least 180 days, the company will consider the pet cured and the condition will no longer be classified as preexisting. Ligament and knee issues are an exception, as they’re considered preexisting for the life of the pet and won’t be covered if they’re diagnosed before plan enrollment or during the waiting period.
Spot provides coverage for spaying/neutering in its Platinum Preventive Care add-on. Spaying/neutering isn’t covered by Spot’s basic plans or for those who’ve purchased the Gold Preventive Care package.
Dental cleanings are covered by Spot’s Gold and Platinum Preventive Care riders for either $100 or $150, depending on the rider. Spot’s standard Accidental & Illness and Accident policies, however, won’t cover dental cleanings.
Spot’s customer service phone line is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST.
Spot’s policies have annual coverage limits ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 as well as the option of choosing unlimited annual coverage.
