McKenzie etching her place in Cedarcrest T&F history…..plus college diamond cuts on a Thursday….

Time for some track and field this morning. Cedarcrest High School multi-sport star Laine McKenzie is an athlete that Red Wolve soccer and basketball fans have come to know and love, and now you can add the track to that list. Because she is permanently etching her name in history.

The sophomore broke two school records yesterday in a Wesco Conference tri-meet involving the Red Wolves at Snohomish High School. Facing both the host Panthers and 4A Jackson, McKenzie won the 100m clocking 12.14 seconds and establishing the new record in that event for CHS, breaking a record previously set by Tayla Weaver back in 2017. Then, McKenzie cleared 36 feet, seven inches to win the triple jump and in the process best a record set by teammate Mira Knowlton just a couple of weeks ago at another conference meet. The two records now make three school records McKenzie has set this season for CHS’s girls, joining the long jump record she set earlier this season.

In other results from the Red Wolve girls, who finished second in the team competition, Summer Soptich won the 400m clocking 1:01.75, while Elise Luoto took the 800m with a time of 2:42.15. Addy Jenkins took the 300m hurdles with a time of 49.39 seconds and was second in the 100m version of that event. Maddy Brooks also set a new school record yesterday, with a toss of 119’11” in the discus. It earned her second in the event, but broke a CHS mark that she set herself a couple weeks ago. So a case here of an athlete working hard and getting better, and getting recognized for it just the same. Good stuff here from Brooks, who as you all know was a top competitor this past winter with the Red Wolve girls’ wrestling team.

Rounding things out, McKenzie also won the high jump with a clearance of five feet flat. On the boys’ side, Jake DiMarzio won the 100m in a time of 11.22 seconds, while Nate Bergman took the 1600m in a time of 4:33.39. CHS’s boys finished third overall as a team with Snohomish sweeping both team titles.

In other boys’ action, there was a sweep of the two javelin divisions – the regular varsity division, and an “open” division that was in place for yesterday’s meet. Jusso Luoto won the varsity event with a toss of 139’5” while Thayles Doerfel won the open division with a solid toss of 129’5”. Elsewhere, Isaac Sanchez-Godinez was second in the long jump with a clear of 19’ 2 ½” and Chase Meikle won the 110m hurdles in a time of 16.61 seconds.

CHS will have competitors, along with Mount Si High School’s track and field squad, at this Saturday’s Eason Invitational, being hosted by Snohomish High School. The meet starts at 10am, although there is an exhibition hammer throwing contest on Friday at 4:00pm. Admission to the meet is $5.

From the colleges this morning:

Baseball: Old friends, former teammates square off in college rivalry games
The Northwest Athletic Conference community colleges’ East Division Wednesday round of games yesterday takes us to Yakima, where old friends and teammates collided. Yakima Valley and Columbia Basin Community Colleges over the past several years have had their share of Mount Si High School baseball alums play ball for both of those schools, and this year is no different, with three former Wildcats in prominent roles on the two teams – infielder Alex Chamberlain and utility player Chris Jarocki on CBC and pitcher Tyler Disch on YVC. The two teams played two yesterday in the first half of the I-82 rivalry, with the squads splitting the twinbill, at Yakima Valley College’s Parker Field.

In the first game, Yakima Valley rolled to a 13-2 win behind a nine-run fifth inning. Chamberlain was 0-3 for CBC in the contest. The nightcap saw the visitors turn the tables and blast the host Yaks 10-1. Chamberlain was 1-5 in that game for the Hawks. Neither Jarocki nor Disch saw action in either game. All three guys are from Snoqualmie with Disch a 2021 Mount Si alum, Jarocki a 2022 and Chamberlain a 2023. The teams will wrap up the rivalry set on Saturday with two in Pasco at Columbia Basin’s home diamond.

Also:

Tennessee Tech, aided by North Bend’s Baunsgard, sinks Nashville-area rival: The Golden Eagles made the short drive down from their Cookeville, TN, campus last night to Murfreesboro and handed host Middle Tennessee State University a 5-2 loss. Senior Troy Baunsgard, he of North Bend and a 2020 Mount Si HS alum, was 1-5 with an RBI in this one for TTU, who moved to 23-14 with the non-conference win. They open a series at home tomorrow night with conference rival Southeast Missouri State University.

Softball: Duvall athlete delivers for Fordham in big doubleheader wins
Duvall’s own Michaela Carter once again had a chance to lead her Fordham University ladies yesterday, and she did just that, hitting a walk-off sacrifice fly to complete a two-run comeback for the Rams in the final inning that helped sink St. Joseph’s 6-5 in the nightcap of a doubleheader at home last night in New York City, giving Fordham a sweep of the twinbill at home. The Rams in the first game beat the Hawks 7-3.

Carter, a senior, finished 1-4 with a double and RBI in the opener, then the 2019 Cedarcrest HS grad delivered the dagger in the second game as noted and went 1-3 with that RBI. The two wins helped Fordham gain valuable position in the league standings in the NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference against the league-leading St. Joe’s squad. Fordham will look to carry this forward this weekend when they head to upstate New York to meet St. Bonaventure.

Quality production for North Bend’s Kreidel-Reimer in twinbill split: North Bend’s Emery Kreidel-Reimer was a big part of yesterday’s doubleheader split for Boston’s Simmons University against area rival Regis University.

She pinch-ran in the opener scoring a run as part of a four-run seventh which was the difference for the Sharks in a 4-0 win, then the 2022 Mount Si HS grad doubled as part of a 2-3 game in the nightcap, scoring a run. Despite that, Regis held on for a 4-3 win to get the split. Kriedel-Reimer, a sophomore, is hitting just .106 on the season in 25 games with that double being her first of the season for Simmons, now 9-18 on the season. They play Norwich University for two Saturday.

Diamond cuts…..

Good Thursday morning. Cedarcrest High School’s track and field team held a meet yesterday and that is coming up later. First, though, diamond cuts. Mount Si High School’s softball ladies scored a key road win last night that should hopefully set them up well for a solid push to the finish line this spring in Kingco 4A.

Ally Hetzel homered, and a strong performance in the circle from freshman Jenna Nowak lifted Mount Si to a 6-4 win over Redmond last night at Redmond High School. Anna Braukus went 3-3 with two doubles, the second of which was the key hit in a three-run fourth that broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the Wildcats. She drove in two runs. Addison Craig also had three hits pacing Mount Si scoring two runs.

Nowak went the distance, allowing the four Redmond runs, just one of which was earned, on six hits, walking one and striking out five. Kati Cygan homered for the Mustangs.

The win moved Mount Si to just one game under .500 at 6-7 overall, 5-6 in league, and they are in the thick of the playoff chase. The Wildcats host Inglemoor tomorrow night at home with a win giving Mount Si some cushion over the Vikings, who are one game behind Mount Si in the standings. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie.

In other Kingco and Wesco action last night, courtesy of our friends at GameChanger and the GameChanger app, available on phones and tablets in their app stores:

North Creek 8, Issaquah 4: Reagan Fleming did it all last night for North Creek in their win over the Eagles. Fleming homered and drove in three runs, then went the distance in the circle allowing the four Issy runs on four hits walking three and striking out 11. Sadie Huryn led the Eagles going 2-3 with two runs scored.

Everett 13, Shorecrest 0: Isa Davis homered twice and that was music to the ears of the freshman pitching duo of Mia Hoekendorf and Anna Luscher, who combined on a one-hitter walking three and striking out six for the Seagulls as they cruised to the win over the Scots at home in Everett last night.

Meadowdale 14, Cascade 9
Bothell 10, Eastlake 1
Inglemoor 11, Newport 1
Stanwood 12, Monroe 9

Baseball: Valley teams on short end of 10-0 blowouts
It was not a good night last night for either Mount Si or Cedarcrest High School’s baseball teams, as both varsity squads were very cold offensively and fell in 10-0 results to league rivals – the Red Wolves to Shorecrest and the Wildcats on senior night at home to the Bothell Cougars.

The Red Wolves were held to only one hit by Shorecrest pitcher Jakob Lockwood, the one hit belonging to Josh Polacek. Lockwood walked one and struck out 14 in the mercy-rule result which ended the game after five innings. He also tripled and drove in two runs. As for Mount Si, their bats were held down by Bothell ace Sawyer Wickstrom, who fired a two-hitter walking one and striking out eight. The two Mount Si hits belonged to Clayton Crooks and Matt Talbot. Wyatt Mickleberry powered the Blue Train with three doubles and five RBI’s in this one.

Mount Si is at North Creek tomorrow while Cedarcrest hosts Shorecrest at home, also tomorrow.

Mount Si JV falls despite Catini’s heroics: An Austin Catini homer and strong showing offensively from Jacob Hayes were not enough for Mount Si’s junior varsity as they fell 9-8 last night to Bothell’s JV’s at Bothell High School. Catini scored two runs and drove in three more while Hayes had two hits, scored twice and drove in two more runs. Mount Si’s JV’s host North Creek tomorrow night at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie.

Other Kingco and Wesco results for you from GameChanger and their apps, available on phones and tablets.

Eastlake 3, Redmond 1: A Grady Woodward homer was the difference last night for the Wolves in their rivalry win over the Mustangs in Redmond. Woodward’s blast proved useful for pitcher Cody O’Donnell, who dominated on the mound in this one for Eastlake. O’Donnell went the distance allowing an unearned run on only three hits, walking one and striking out seven. Mathias Gendzwill was 1-3 with a run scored for Redmond.

Meadowdale 7, Lynnwood 1: Malikhi Emery-Henderson led the way for the Mavericks with a triple, run scored and RBI as Meadowdale sank the Royals in the Lynnwood city battle last night at Lynnwood High School. Pitcher Isaiah Kepoo-Sabate paced the Mavericks, going six innings allowing a run on two hits, walking three and striking out 14. Gavin Harrington led Lynnwood going 1-2 with a run.

Skyline 2, Issaquah 1
Mountlake Terrace 2, Shorewood 0
Edmonds-Woodway 7, Cascade 0
North Creek 6, Newport 3
Woodinville 5, Inglemoor 1

Ramsey’s big game leads Mount Si boys soccer to another Kingco win

Mount Si High School’s boys’ soccer team pocketed another win last night with the help of their senior captain.

Zach Ramsey had three goals – a “hat trick” – leading the Wildcats to a 4-1 win over Inglemoor at Pop Keeney Stadium for their fourth Kingco 4A win of the season. Mount Si opened the scoring with about 10 minutes left in the first half, then responded quickly following the Vikings scoring to open the second half, scoring two quick goals following that Inglemoor tally to take command and take the match. Mount Si finishes 3-1 against Northshore School District opponents this spring, with their loss to Woodinville being the lone loss against the four northern Kingco 4A opponents.

Mount Si hosts a biggie Friday with Eastlake. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie.

News on a Wednesday complete with the SVSJ’s weekly volleyball report for April 17!

The 1United 12U girls’ volleyball team from the Dallas-Fort Worth area qualified for the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Nationals youth girls’ volleyball tournament this summer after finishing second in their division at this past weekend’s Salt Lake Showdown tournament. Player Paige McCormick’s (third from right in back row) mom, Renee, is a former Mount Si High School coach and educator. (Facebook photo/Renee McCormick)

Good Wednesday morning. We will have last night’s news in a moment but we first want to lead things off with our weekly look at local girls’ club volleyball for you in the Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal.

Salt Lake City was a happening place this past weekend as a couple of teams with ties to Mount Si High School competed against regional and national competition at the Salt Lake Showdown national qualifying tournament at the Salt Palace Convention Center. It was a mixed bag of results as well.

Tacoma-based DaKine’s 17U’s won the 17U “USA” division Bronze level title after going 4-4 in the event. The team features Mount Si High School’s Maggie Kamp (second from left front row) and Tahoma High School’s Isabelle Foote (front row left next to Kamp), daughter of retired Wildcat volleyball coach Bonnie Foote. (Facebook photo/Bonnie Foote)

Tacoma’s DaKine Warriors 17U’s won the Bronze level title in the 17U “USA” division at the tournament after finishing 4-4 on the weekend but did not earn a trip to the national tournament later this summer. The team, featuring Wildcat Maggie Kamp and Tahoma High School’s Isabelle Foote, daughter of retired Mount Si coach Bonnie Foote, started out well on the opening day Friday including a win over an eastern Washington team in which Isabelle Foote slammed the door shut on proceedings with a kill, but had challenges on the second day on Saturday hurting their chances of making the national tournament. DaKine rebounded on Sunday though to take that Bronze title beating a different eastern Washington team for that crown.

In other action, Bellevue’s Sudden Impact 17U Storm, with Mount Si’s Sophie Lobet, finished way back in 34th in the 17U “Open” division after only going 2-7 on the weekend down there, and a Texas-based 12U team that also has a very loose past tie to Mount Si earned a berth to nationals out of this event.

The 1United Blue team, based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, took second in the 12U “National/USA” division only falling once all weekend – in the title game to a California team. The squad features player Paige McCormick, whose mom, Renee, is a former longtime Mount Si girls’ sports coach and educator (primarily with gymnastics and volleyball). The McCormick’s relocated from the Valley to Texas several years ago and Renee McCormick remains active as an educator, working in a suburban Dallas school district. A congratulations from us to the McCormick’s and the team on this success. Texas squads tend to do well in national competition, so expectations should be high for a successful national tournament for this group and we wish them luck later this summer.

On tap for this weekend: High-school age teams from USA Volleyball’s Puget Sound Region will be in action this weekend competing in regional Power League competition. This will be the last chance for teams to get themselves into position for the upcoming regional championship tournament that will take place in a couple of weeks.

We will have more on this next week in our segment so look for that there. This has been your weekly volleyball report covering USA Volleyball’s Puget Sound Region in the SVSJ. Time now for our news items from last night.

Baseball: Mount Si “C” falls
Mount Si High School’s “C” team was limited to just one hit in their 8-1 home loss in Snoqualmie last night to O’Dea in a non-conference contest. Charles Robinson had the lone Wildcat hit while Jackson Barter scored the lone Mount Si run. The Wildcats have lost three straight and six out of their last seven, but will look to bounce back tomorrow when they host Issaquah for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie.

Also, Cedarcrest High School’s varsity makeup game against Meadowdale was again rained out yesterday; they were attempting to make up a rainout from Monday. The teams will attempt to make the game up again on Saturday.

Players with Mount Si ties square off in college game: Two players with past ties to Mount Si High School’s program faced one another in a college baseball game yesterday.

George Fox University’s junior varsity squad beat Lower Columbia College 4-1 in the non-conference game down in Longview. Mason Gronewald, a Mercer Island High School graduate who played his freshman season of high school baseball with Mount Si, went 1-4 with an RBI for the Bruins, who are an NCAA Division III school located in Oregon. Jake Smith, a 2022 Mount Si alum from Snoqualmie, was 0-4 at the plate but also saw his first action on the mound this spring for the Red Devils, part of the Northwest Athletic Conference, the regional league for Washington and Oregon two-year community colleges. He worked two innings and they were perfect with three strikeouts. He received no decision.

LCC is off until April 27.

Softball: Skidmore making up for lost time, and a Valleyite helps out
NCAA Division III Skidmore College’s ladies have been busy the past two days making up a pair of previously rained-out doubleheaders against in-state foes.

Monday, the Thoroughbreds fell 11-7 and 10-5 in the two games against SUNY Oneonta at home in Saratoga Springs, NY, then yesterday, they took their frustrations out on SUNY Delhi, sweeping that twinbill in Delhi, NY, by the scores of 16-3 and 12-0. Sophomore Madison Bonham saw action in both doubleheader nightcaps, going 0-3 in the one against Oneonta Monday and 0-1 last night in the game with Delhi. Bonham, from North Bend, is a 2022 Mount Si HS grad.

Skidmore has two with the University of Rochester on Friday.

High schools: Cedarcrest High School’s scheduled game with Arlington at home in Duvall yesterday was rained out. They will attempt to make the game up on Saturday, April 27. There was one Wesco game that did get in last night that we can report on though. Snohomish handled Marysville-Getchell 8-5 at home in Snohomish. Kendel Sage led the Panthers going 2-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, and Abby Edwards also had two hits including a triple for SHS. As for Getchell, Lily Balgos homered to lead things there for the Chargers.

Lacrosse: Mount Si boys drop return game from spring break
In the first game back from their spring break trip to the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas, Mount Si Lacrosse Club’s high school boys fell at home to Bellevue 10-6 last night in Snoqualmie.

Levi Henretig had two goals for the Wildcats while goals were also scored by Luca Toldo, A.J. Spence and Luke Jones. Mount Si hosts Eastlake Friday. Due to a Wildcat boys’ soccer home match that night, ironically against the Wolves, the lacrosse game will take place at Chief Kanim Middle School in Fall City. Also, Cedarcrest Lacrosse’s boys high school team resumes action after their spring break taking on Jackson at Kasch Park in Everett.

Tuesday news: Mount Si baseball one-hit in road loss at Woodinville

Good Tuesday morning. We start with baseball on this Tuesday. This has been a rather topsy-turvy season for Mount Si High School’s baseball team, and that continued last night. The Wildcat bats, which were hot in their previous game against Inglemoor in a 10-0 blowout win last Friday over the Vikings, went real cold last night in a road loss at Woodinville against the Falcons.

Pitcher Cooper Angellar was dominant on the hill for Woodinville, firing a complete-game one-hitter walking two and striking out six as the Falcons blanked Mount Si 7-0. Taylor Davis had the lone Wildcat hit. Danny Roberto led Woodinville, with two hits, a run scored and two RBI’s.

Mount Si is home meeting Bothell on Wednesday. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

Wildcat JV’s win behind the Alex’s: Pitchers Alex Martinez and Alex Ott combined on a two-hitter for Mount Si’s JV’s as they held off Woodinville’s junior varsity 1-0 at home last night in Snoqualmie. Pinch-runner Drew Hossfeld scored the lone run of the game in the sixth for Mount Si on a passed ball. The Wildcats only had two hits in the game, those belonged to Preston Pryzbylski and Brett Kissick. Martinez allowed both of the Woodinville hits in six innings of work walking one and striking out six. Mount Si is at Bothell tomorrow.

Mount Si alum Aasland named college conference pitcher of week: Bellevue College freshman pitcher Tristan Aasland was named Northwest Athletic Conference (community colleges) North Division pitcher of the week yesterday. The 2023 Mount Si HS grad tossed six innings of shutout baseball on Sunday striking out three for the Bulldogs in a 10-0 win over Shoreline CC. Aasland, from Snoqualmie, has seen his fortunes improve as of late following a somewhat rocky start to his college career. He currently is 3-2 with a 2.35 earned run average and is striking out better than 10 hitters every nine innings which has him in the lead in that category with Bellevue. The Bulldogs host Everett on Saturday for two at Courter Field on the BCC campus in Bellevue.

Cedarcrest rained out: Cedarcrest’s scheduled home game with Meadowdale was rained out at Cedarcrest High School in Duvall yesterday. They will attempt to make the game up today.

Elsewhere around Kingco 4A and Wesco South, courtesy of GameChanger and their apps, available on phones and tablets in their app stores:

Meek no-hits Lynnwood: Mountlake Terrace High School pitcher Owen Meek tossed a no-hitter last night against Wesco rival Lynnwood. Meek walked two and struck out eight in the 7-0 result for the Hawks over the Royals. Griffin Potter led Mountlake with three hits offensively.

Other scores:

Issaquah 2, Newport 1
Shorewood 1, Cascade 0
Edmonds-Woodway 5, Shorecrest 0
Inglemoor 8, Bothell 2
North Creek 4, Eastlake 3

Softball: Wesco action
Both Cedarcrest and Mount Si High School softball teams were off yesterday but some of the Red Wolves’ Wesco rivals were in action. The feature game was in Lynnwood where Edmonds-Woodway’s top half of the order was on fire in a 20-5 blowout of the Royals. The top five hitters in the Warrior batting order went a combined 16-22 in the game with 13 runs scored and 13 RBI’s with three doubles and one triple. Renee Riggins led the way for Ed-Wood, going 4-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI’s.

In other action:

Mountlake Terrace 12, Archbishop Murphy 0
Shorewood 7, Cascade 6
Stanwood 6, Everett 2
Meadowdale 13, Marysville-Pilchuck 1

Lacrosse: Mount Si girls win, and get great news about an international opportunity for their goalie
Mount Si Lacrosse’s high school girls’ squad returned from spring break and their top player didn’t show any rust from the time off.

Alex Kremer pocketed another nine-goal game, her fourth of those of the season, leading Mount Si to a 19-9 blowout of the team representing Newport, Sammamish and Interlake High Schools last night in Bellevue. Julia Stanley had three goals and four assists and Alexa Coughran added four more goals to the efforts. Katie Swanson, Sophia Recchi and Sydney Schmitt also had a goal each in this one for the Wildcats.

Goalie Francesca Tamburini made 14 saves in this one for MSLC and has been named to the Italian women’s national lacrosse team for their upcoming trip to the European women’s lacrosse championships that are a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s World Lacrosse Championships. That event is later this summer. So a great opportunity for our local athlete to represent her community in prestigious international competition. Congrats to Francesca from us here.

Mount Si moves to 6-2 on the season and is at Eastlake next Tuesday night.

Running: Valley delegation races in Boston Marathon
A good-sized delegation of residents from our community traveled yesterday to Boston to compete in the 128th annual Boston Marathon. Men and women from many of the Valley communities represented our area well in the competition, which saw the group take on top recreational and competitive runners from all over the world.

A total of eight runners from the Valley participated in the race. The best of those finishers was Snoqualmie’s Phil Gousman, who ran the 26.2-mile course on the streets of Boston and surrounding suburbs in just over three hours. The top local woman in the race was Aimee Nogoy from Duvall, who made the run in 3:19:03. Placings for the finishers were not available, but the accomplishment alone of completing this very grueling race is certainly noteworthy for all of our local competitors. The remaining local runners in the race were North Bend’s Kevin Currie and Amie Pendleton-Knoll, Snoqualmie’s Kerri Dellisanti, Nick Gloe and Tarah Poirot and Carnation’s Rosanne Kelley. A congratulations to all of you on your performances yesterday from us here.

The weekend wrap!

Good Monday morning. We lead off our weekend wrap with diamond cuts, and we start there with some softball. Yesterday was a solid day for the Valley’s local select fastpitch program, as two of its teams took home tournament hardware at a weekend tournament.

The Wildcat Fastpitch Club’s 14U Johnson and 12U Duxbury teams both fared well, with 12U winning a “Silver” division title and 14U taking second in that division yesterday at the weekend USSSA Angels for Autism tournament, taking place down in south King County. The squads beat teams from around the Puget Sound area to take those titles, which continue their strong success during the course of the 2023-24 club season. The program, based in Snoqualmie, is continuing to grow and success such as this, especially considering many of the players on both teams are students in the Snoqualmie Valley School District, will ensure that growth will continue moving forward. For more information on the program and getting your daughter involved in it, Google Wildcat Fastpitch Club.

Also yesterday:

Fall City team comes up short in Tri-Cities: Fall City’s KB Fastpitch Riley 14U’s exchanged a pair of one-run games yesterday at their weekend event in the Tri-Cities and did not earn any trophies. They beat an Oregon team but fell to one from southeast King County at the event. Their season will continue through this spring. The squad is coached by Valley resident Chris Riley and has several players who attend schools in the SVSD.

Colleges:

Oklahoma State 10, Iowa State 2: The highly-ranked Cowboys took a couple of days of frustration out on the Cyclones, exploding for seven runs over the final two innings to take the finale of a weekend set in Ames, IA. Freshman catcher Maddie Knowles saw action behind the plate for Iowa State in this contest with no official at-bats. She is from Duvall and a 2023 Cedarcrest HS grad.

Simmons 4, New England College 3 (game two, doubleheader): The Sharks swept two from the rival NEC squad, taking this nightcap game after a dominant opening game win. Sophomore Emery Kreidel-Reimer, from North Bend and a 2022 Mount Si HS grad, was 0-2 in this one for Simmons. She did not play in the opener, won easily 7-0 by the Sharks on the strength of a one-hitter by pitcher Piper Kinney. Kinney, who like Kreidel-Reimer is a sophomore, struck out 10. She is from the Boston area.

Dayton 5, Fordham 0: The Flyers blanked the Rams in the weekend finale of their series in New York. Senior Michaela Carter, she of Duvall and a 2019 Cedarcrest HS grad, was 1-3 in this one for Fordham.

Baseball: Davenport gets a second helping
One of the more interesting aspects of minor league baseball is the elongated five or six-game series teams play as part of the schedule. This sometimes results in starting pitchers getting second chances to see a lineup in the same series. That happened yesterday with Duvall’s Aaron Davenport, as the 2018 Cedarcrest High School grad, coming off a strong showing in his outing last Tuesday against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, faced the bats from the San Francisco Giants-affiliated double-A class squad pitching for the Cleveland Guardians’ double-A Akron Rubber Ducks team yesterday for a second time. And one thing that might be expected would be that the offense would make adjustments and as such make Davenport’s day challenging. That didn’t really happen.

Davenport worked 4 2/3 innings allowing a run on just six hits, with the run being unearned. He walked three and struck out two but got no decision as the Flying Squirrels unloaded for four runs in the sixth off the Akron bullpen and took the contest 5-1 at home in Richmond, VA. This dropped Akron to 5-4 on the season. The Rubber Ducks host Erie on Friday and that is when Davenport is expected to get another starting call. MILB.tv will have the game streaming and it begins at 4:00 our time.

Colleges:

Bellevue 10, Shoreline 0 (game one, doubleheader): Freshman pitcher Tristan Aasland, from Snoqualmie, dominated on the hill for Bellevue, with the 2023 Mount Si High School alum scattering just four hits in six strong innings of work walking one and striking out three as the Bulldogs handled the Dolphins in the first of two in north Seattle. Sophomore Gabe Villaflor, from Duvall, was 0-3 in this one for BCC with a run scored and RBI.

Lower Columbia 4, Clark 1 (game one, doubleheader): The Red Devils and Penguins met again for two yesterday, this time down in Vancouver, with LCC taking the opener. Sophomore Jake Smith, he of Snoqualmie and a 2022 MSHS alum, was 0-4 in this one for the Red Devils. He did not play in the nightcap of the twinbill, won by Lower Columbia 10-2 giving them the sweep of the pair.

Whitworth 6, Whitman 5 (game one, doubleheader): The Pirates bested the Blues in the first of two in Spokane. Junior Kevin Corder, he of Snoqualmie and a 2022 Mount Si HS alum, was 1-2 in this one with two walks and a run scored for Whitworth. He did not play the nightcap of the rivalry twinbill, won handily by the Pirates 16-5 with the help of a 13-run second inning. That earned Whitworth a sweep of the pair.

Lindenwood 5, Tennessee Tech 3: The host Lions avoided a sweep of the weekend set with the visiting Golden Eagles taking the finale of the set at home in St. Louis. Senior Troy Baunsgard, he of North Bend and a 2020 Mount Si HS grad, was 1-3 with a double and RBI for Tech in the contest.

Bellevue 7, Shoreline 5 (game two, doubleheader): Villaflor had two hits including a double, scoring a run, as the Bulldogs took the nightcap and swept two from the Dolphins in north Seattle last night. He is an Eastside Catholic School alum.

Lacrosse
Fox ladies unload on Whitworth: Fresh off their historic accomplishment of notching their first-ever winning season, Whitworth University’s ladies came back down to earth yesterday, getting humbled by George Fox University in a 22-2 home loss to the first-place Bruins. Freshman Campbell Vincent had an assist for Whitworth. She is from Snoqualmie and a 2023 Mount Si HS/Mount Si Lacrosse Club alum.

Lebanon Valley men win: Lebanon Valley College’s men blasted visiting Delaware Valley College 21-6 at home yesterday in Pennsylvania. Goalie Kellen Markley, he of Snoqualmie and a 2022 MSHS/MSLC’er, didn’t have to do much work in goal for LVC, making three saves on seven shots faced in 41 minutes of work before being lifted for backup William Ward. Markley got the winning decision in goal. He is a sophomore this spring.

A banner weekend for Rezoski: Colorado Mesa University’s ladies pocketed a 16-3 home win yesterday in Grand Junction, CO, over Colorado State University-Pueblo. Sophomore Emme Rezoski, she of Duvall and a 2021 Cedarcrest HS alum, had no goals yesterday but recorded six draw controls, effectively faceoff wins, in the contest for CMU. We mention this because we neglected to mention yesterday she set a school record in this stat category in their win last Friday over Fort Lewis College of Colorado. Rezoski, who played her high school lacrosse with Mount Si Lacrosse Club, recorded 17 draw controls, breaking a record set in 2019 by program alum Olivia Hayden. WTG Emme!

Rounding it out on a Sunday…..

We have some softball for you now this morning. A pair of teams from the Snoqualmie-based Wildcat Fastpitch Club are in action this weekend at a USSSA weekend tournament down in Kent.

WFC’s 14U’s won once yesterday in three tries at the tournament. Lainey Myers led the way for the Wildcats with two hits, a run scored and two RBI’s for the WFC squad in a 12-5 win over local rival Sting Fastpitch. WFC fell in two other games to teams from the Tacoma area. Wildcats 12U Duxbury is also competing in the tournament and scored a win, loss and draw in their three games yesterday. The tournament wraps up today.

KB’s win came over a team from Oregon, with the loss coming to a team from Idaho and the ties coming against teams from our state. Action in the event continues today. Knowles is from Duvall and a 2023 Cedarcrest HS grad and is set to take over the catching duties with the Cyclones following Marin’s graduation after this season. Knowles saw action with no at-bats but it was Marin, from California, who showed Knowles and the rest of the team leadership with one swing of the bat. Track & Field: LeBlanc featured in SPU article
Seattle Pacific University men’s distance runner Brennan LeBlanc is featured this morning by the Falcons’ athletic communications office in a story on their website after a solid showing yesterday at the Beach Invitational in southern California.

LeBlanc, a senior from Duvall and Cedarcrest HS grad, battled injuries to take sixth overall in the men’s 3000m steeplechase run clocking nine minutes, 38.30 seconds. The meet was hosted by Long Beach State University at their campus in Long Beach and was one of two big southern California meets this weekend that featured local athletes. More on LeBlanc here from the SPU story.

The second event involving locals was the Bryan Clay Invitational, and this was being hosted by Azusa Pacific University at their campus in Azusa, about a 30-minute drive east of downtown Los Angeles. There, four Mount Si High School alums competed. Freshman Jake Hall represented Simon Fraser University in the men’s 100m and finished 40th; Hall, from Snoqualmie, clocked 10.79 seconds. Two others, Ames Lake’s Paul Talens and North Bend’s Austin Gappa, competed in that meet’s men’s 3000m steeplechase. Talens, a junior at Gonzaga University, clocked just over nine minutes taking 30th, and Gappa finished 47th clocking 9:11.52. He was racing for Oregon’s George Fox University.

Rounding it out, Snoqualmie senior Joe Waskom, racing for the University of Washington, finished 56th in the men’s 1500m invitational run. He clocked 3:43.48.

Other action:

Byerly Invitational, Portland: Two ex-Wildcats competed at this meet in Portland hosted by Lewis & Clark College yesterday. Central Washington sophomore John “Jack” Pratapas, from North Bend, finished 11th in the men’s 800m with a time of 1:57.32. He also attempted to run the 5000m but did not finish that race. In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, Oregon Tech sophomore Tychon Preston, from Snoqualmie, finished fourth, clocking 9:53.09.

Whitworth Twilight, Spokane: This past Thursday, the Pirates hosted a meet with several schools from around eastern Washington. Whitworth freshman London Haley competed in the men’s 800m and finished 16th clocking just over two minutes. He is from Duvall and a 2023 Cedarcrest HS grad.

A lot of lacrosse, and a side of action from the links….

Time now for some lacrosse. With spring break rapidly coming to a close, we want to give you an update on how Mount Si Lacrosse Club’s girls’ high school lacrosse program is doing at midseason.

The Wildcats are 4-2 on the season, with their most recent game being a 16-8 win April 4 over Lakeside School at home in Snoqualmie. In that game, Alex Kremer had nine, yes, nine goals, one of two games this season in which she has scored that many tallies. Those outputs have helped propel her to a fantastic first half in which she has scored 36 goals already on the campaign. Other players to keep an eye on include Julia Stanley, who had five goals in that game, and Alexa Coughran, who had two goals and three assists. These three players have factored primarily in the offensive efforts thus far for the Mount Si ladies as they look to maintain a strong start to the season when they return from spring break tomorrow taking on a club representing Bellevue School District high schools Newport, Sammamish and Interlake.

Girls’ high school lacrosse, like the boys, is not currently sanctioned as a high school sport in Washington by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. Their organization, the Washington Schoolgirls’ Lacrosse Association, this spring implemented a new website which has not been providing stats of games involving Mount Si unlike in past years. This has caused us to not cover them until now. We have established a working communication channel with the girls’ program at Mount Si and will be able to regularly run reports for all games in the second half of the schedule. We thank parent Patricia Tamburini for assisting us with this.

Colleges:

Four goals from Vincent help Whitworth women make history: It has been a stellar season for freshman Campbell Vincent, and her success has propelled her college squad to a historic achievement.

Vincent, from North Bend and a 2023 Mount Si HS/Mount Si Lacrosse Club alum, scored four goals for Whitworth University’s ladies helping them sink Linfield University from Oregon 15-12 yesterday over in Spokane. The win secured the first-ever winning season for the Pirates in program history. Whitworth is 5-0 in league play in NCAA Division III’s Northwest Conference and 9-3 overall. The goals for Vincent moved her to 37 on the season, which is one of the top goal totals for a freshman anywhere right now in NCAA Division III. Good stuff for sure and our congrats to Campbell and her teammates.

Freshman Landgraf chips in to another Roanoke men’s rout: 2023 MSHS/MSLC alum Aidan Landgraf pitched in with a couple of assists helping his Roanoke College men’s squad cruise past Virginia Wesleyan 25-3 in a road contest at VW’s field in Virginia Beach, VA. Landgraf is from Snoqualmie. The win moved to Roanoke to 12-2 on the season.

Drought ends for Duvall’s Rezoski: She had not scored a goal at the college level since her freshman year in 2022, but late Friday, Cedarcrest High School alum Emme Rezoski made her return to the score sheet, pocketing a goal for Colorado Mesa University’s ladies in a 17-6 win over in-state rival Fort Lewis of Colorado at home in Grand Junction, CO. Rezoski, from Duvall and who played for Mount Si Lacrosse Club while in high school with Cedarcrest not having a girls’ program, scored five goals as a freshman for the Mavericks. She is a junior this spring with Mesa, an NCAA Division II program.

Valley trio do their thing for Elmhurst men: As has been custom all season, a trio of Valley players pitched in helping their men’s squad from Elmhurst University in Illinois deliver a win. Chris Haycock scored three goals and added two assists, and Eli Spence added a goal and three helpers for the Blue Jays in the 18-1 blowout at home outside Chicago over in-state rival Augustana. Spence, a sophomore, connected with Haycock, a senior, for a goal just before halftime. Freshman Gabe Henry played defense for Elmhurst and recorded a ground ball and forced turnover. All three young men are from Snoqualmie and are MSHS/MSLC alums.

Ducks ladies stunned: Host San Diego State came in to yesterday’s game with the University of Oregon’s ladies with only one win on the season. The Aztecs scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal with about four minutes left in the game, handing the Ducks a stunning 13-12 loss. Sophomore Anna Simmons scored a goal for Oregon in the game. She is from Snoqualmie and a 2022 MSHS/MSLC alum.

Golf
Maralack, WWU women finish regular season: Western Washington University’s ladies this past week finished out their regular season schedule finishing fourth at the Sonoma State University Spring Invitational in northern California. Viking sophomore Kasey Maralack, from Snoqualmie, fired rounds of 81 and 88 over the two days of the tournament last Monday and Tuesday to finish with a 25-over par 169 for the tournament at the par-72 Foxtail Golf Club near the Sonoma State campus in Rohnert Park, north of San Francisco. She finished tied for 36th in the tournament. Maralack is a 2022 Mount Si HS grad.

Baseball diamond cuts….

Good Sunday morning. We have a lot to get to this morning. We are leading things off this morning with a little baseball. Cedarcrest High School’s baseball team headed yesterday up to Lynnwood and it started out well enough, but a four-run second enabled the opposing Meadowdale Mavericks to take command and hand Cedarcrest a 6-1 loss.

Mount Si boys’ soccer rebounds from early hole to take care of woeful Bothell

Mount Si High School’s boys’ soccer team was under the Friday night lights last night hosting Bothell, and it looked coming in the Wildcats would have their way with the Cougars considering Bothell is in last place in Kingco 4A. But the visitors had other ideas 10 minutes in forcing Mount Si to have to fight back. And fight back they did scoring a home win.

Mount Si High School head boys’ soccer coach Ben Tomlisson (center) talks to his team during halftime of their game last night at home with Bothell. Mount Si rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to take the 3-2 win over the Cougars. (Rhett Workman/SVSJ)

Goals from Zach Ellis, Cade Heyting and Zach Ramsey paced the Wildcats to the 3-2 result over the Cougars. “We’ve been struggling to play our way the last couple of games and I think it has affected our confidence and I think we know that if we play our way which is to get the ball on the ground and use our strengths in midfield then we are unstoppable,” Mount Si coach Ben Tomlisson said.

Mount Si got out of the blocks strong, getting a couple of great chances to score early in the game, but the Wildcats made a couple of mistakes defensively one right after another about 10 minutes in, and Bothell cashed those in for goals putting the Blue Train up 2-0 and Mount Si fans in a state of some disbelief. But the guys didn’t back down and went right to work.

First up was Ellis, who headed a free kick in for the finish in the 31st minute putting the Wildcats on the board, then Heyting did his thing about three minutes later with an absolute wicked laser from mid-range tying the score at 2-2. “Well, (the Bothell) player stepped in too far and we got a ball from the outside to the middle, (and I) had like loads of time so I just took the shot,” he said, and it got the crowd all fired up. “He’s possibly our best all-around athlete,” Tomlisson said of the Mount Si junior midfielder. “His athleticism to take that shot and the confidence to do it and I just love his all-around game.”

With the game tied at halftime, this allowed Tomlisson to make necessary adjustments knowing that the sheet was effectively back to square one and the team was in position to win. So, Mount Si got a number of great opportunities to score including ones that went off both the top crossbar and right goalpost, before Bothell committed what appeared to be a real hard foul against a Wildcat offensive player in the Cougar penalty area, a foul that looked hard enough for officials to have carded the Bothell player but no card was issued. Card or no, the foul being where it was allowed for a penalty kick. Mount Si’s senior team captain Ramsey, as is seemingly custom for him, was assigned the task to get the job done, and he did, putting Mount Si up to stay in the 59th minute. Bothell had chances but the Wildcat defense held steady the rest of the way and slammed the door shut on another Kingco win.

Tomlisson was pleased with how the team responded to the early 2-0 hole. “To see them react in the way they did and create chances was really pleasing,” the coach said.

Mount Si heads to Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell this coming Tuesday to meet Inglemoor. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
