Spaceman Breaks An Adam Sandler Trend

Throughout his career, Sandler has had his fair share of abysmal Rotten Tomatoes scores. By comparison to movies like Jack and Jill (3%), Grown Ups 2 (8%), and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (14%), the Spaceman reviews do not comparatively look bad. However, Sandler’s low-rated films have been for his comedy roles.

In contrast, Sandler’s dramatic roles have earned him copious praise. Sandler’s recent dramatic roles have included parts in Uncut Gems, The Meyerowitz Stories, and the basketball movie Hustle. All three of these films got Certified Fresh scores of over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring 91%, 92%, and 93% approval ratings among critics, respectively. Sandler’s work in his more serious 2002 role, Punch-Drunk Love, even earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Spaceman’s passable score is a major letdown based on recent Sandler trends. This is a shame, as Renck has lauded Sandler’s Spaceman performance, pointing out how different of a role it is for Sandler. Hopefully, Spaceman can still resonate with viewers if it continues to rank higher among audiences than critics.
