REASON FOR RANKING: Congrats to the Steeles for releasing the best Southern Gospel album of 2023. A career that spans nearly 40 years found the group releasing one of the best albums of their recording career. Also, Brad Steele is currently one of Southern Gospel music’s premier songwriters.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “A Hundred Different Altars”; (2) “Braggin On Jesus”; (3) “In The Dark”; (4) “On The King’s Shoulders”; (5) “On The Way”.
REASON FOR RANKING: Southbound burst on the scene several years ago with their ‘high powered’ live performances. The trio released their sophomore album in 2023 and by far their best album to date.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Lost And Found”; (2) “Nothing He Can’t Do”; (3) “Somebody Testify”; (4) “Time And Jesus”; (5) “His Love”.
REASON FOR RANKING: Jeff and Sheri Easter continue to provide listeners with some of the best Southern Gospel music anytime they release a new album. The album already has two #1 songs.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “One Name”; (2) “Here Comes Jesus”; (3) “Fall Into Place”; (4) “Sunshine On A Cloudy Day”; (5) “The Giving Part Of Living”.
REASON FOR RANKING: The highest ranked quartet album of 2023 comes from the LeFevre Quartet. Several years ago the group announced their retirement and then shortly after decided on a limited touring schedule. Good thing, because listeners weren’t done with the caliber of songs the LeFevre Quartet provide.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Nobody Like Jesus”; (2) “Glory Bound”; (3) “Cast My Burdens”; (4) “Man In The Middle”; (5) “There Is A Name”.
REASON FOR RANKING: The Down East Boys are among two quartets to have one of the top five albums released in 2023. This is the fourth straight album by the quartet to be one of the top five albums released in that specific year (2018, 2020, 2022, 2023).
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Love Worth Dying For”; (2) “The Song Of The Redeemed”; (3) “Celebration At The Empty Grave”; (4) “A Song About Going Home”; (5) “There’s A Song For That”.
REASON FOR RANKING: The Browns released the best album of their career in 2023 with Breakthrough.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Breakthrough”; (2) “My View From The Valley”; (3) “The Tomb Is Empty Now”; (4) “Move”; (5) “The Song We Sing”.
REASON FOR RANKING: The Wisecarvers continue to provide listeners with a country, acoustical style anchored by the songwriting of group members Kaila, Dustin and Chase Wisecarver.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Like This”; (2) “Stay Home”; (3) “Victory Story”; (4) “All I Got, All I Need”; (5) “Grace”.
REASON FOR RANKING: The new group that I was introduced to in 2023 that provided one of the top ten albums released in 2023 was the Meadows. This siblings trio is following in the footsteps of groups like the Martins.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Fountain Of Life”; (2) “Nothing Less”; (3) “If You Ever Wonder If He Loves You”; (4) “If He Can’t Do It”; (5) “The Me I’ll Never Know”.
REASON FOR RANKING: One of the best produced albums of 2023 was Beautiful by the Nelons. Jason Clark’s work was flawless.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Beautiful”; (2) “God Is Speaking”; (3) “O For A Thousand Tongues”; (4) “Put On A Crown”; (5) “Hear The Voice Of My Beloved”.
REASON FOR RANKING: Tribute Quartet was one of three quartets to land among the top ten Southern Gospel albums released in 2023. Ian Owens shined through on Always Grace.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Nobody’s Too Broken”; (2) “The Cross Tells A Different Story”; (3) “Free Indeed”; (4) “Glory”; (5) “Halfway Up The Mountain”.
REASON FOR RANKING: Gordon Mote is not only one of Southern Gospel’s best producers but he can also release some of the best Southern Gospel music you’ll find.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Come Tomorrow”; (2) “The First Song”; (3) “Door Wide Open”; (4) “Wool”; (5) “Missing Jesus”.
REASON FOR RANKING: The Ferguson Family released the best album of their career thus far, anchored by the hit song, “The Healer Sees Me”.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “The Healer Sees Me”; (2) “It Could’ve Been Me”; (3) “When It’s All Over But The Shoutin”; (4) “The Way It Should Be”; (5) “God’s Gonna See You Through”.
REASON FOR RANKING: One of the best debut albums in several years was released in 2023 by TrueSong. The group brings a progressive Southern Gospel style that is reminiscent of the Gaither Vocal Band.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Army Of Love”; (2) “Jesus 1, Death 0”; (3) “I Got Saved”; (4) “Waiting For Me”; (5) “Revival”.
REASON FOR RANKING: One of the best family group’s of the last several years has been Endless Highway. They continue to balance traditional Southern Gospel with progressive sounds. Their sound/style reminds me a great deal of the Lesters.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Love Carried The Cross”; (2) “What God Can Do”; (3) “I’ll Get Over It”; (4) “The End”; (5) “Secret Place Of Prayer”.
REASON FOR RANKING: Jason Crabb continues to cross genres and release music that appeals to a Southern Gospel and CCM audience.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Good Morning Mercy”; (2) “God Can Use A Broken Man”; (3) “It’s Gonna Rain”; (4) “That’s Why I Live This Way”; (5) “Grace Is Still Amazing”.
REASON FOR RANKING: The Gaither Vocal Band put together a collection of 13 songs anchored by the Larry Gatlin penned, “Make The Morning Worth The Midnight”.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “Make The Morning Worth The Midnight”; (2) “Shine (Darker The Night, Brighter The Light)”; (3) “Revival Broke Out”; (4) “Love Em Where They Are”; (5) “May The Words Of My Mouth”.
REASON FOR RANKING: Tim Menzies provide listeners with a traditional country style. He also wrote/co-wrote every song on He Reminds Me.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “River Of Sin”; (2) “Sanding Off The Edges”; (3) “On My Father’s Side”; (4) “What Are You Waiting For”; (5) “One More Reason”.
REASON FOR RANKING: The Chuck Wagon Gang took a bluegrass approach with Come Go With Me; while still providing listeners their traditional acoustical sound. Josh Garner also turned in the best performance of “For What Earthly Reason”, I’ve heard.
FIVE BEST SONGS FROM THE ALBUM: (1) “I Will Not Cry Today”; (2) “For What Earthly Reason”; (3) “Come Go With Me”; (4) “Our Sins Are Washed Away”; (5) “The Mighty Word Of God”.
REASON FOR RANKING: Westward Road has always brought listeners a polished, progressive Southern Gospel style.

REASON FOR RANKING: Weston and Christy Hinson (Hinson Family) continue the Hinson tradition. It is no surprise Weston Hinson’s vocal closely resembles his father, the late Kenny Hinson. Sundays Never End featured 15 new songs.
