I use a new Apple TV 4K with a Sony A9S OLED and while it works fine, there seems to be some lag at times that I don't experience with my ATV + Samsung. For example I almost always experience a delay when trying to bring up the app switcher....not a big deal but it happens. I've heard Sony TVs don't always play well with other devices. I've also noticed flickering during dark, near black scenes that don't appear when using the native apps. Again, not a big deal but it's something I've noticed and I've read that others experience....

I use my ATV 4K 2017 with a 2020 Sony Bravia XBR-49X800H. I have no issues with them working together. I use my TV to control all the devices and soundbar that are attached, and it does a great job with my ATV 4K, Fire TV Cube, and Panasonic Blu-ray player. Whenever I turn on any of these devices, the TV uses HDMI-HEC to turn on the TV and the Sony soundbar too, and the TV remote can then operate all of these devices. The device remotes can also work their own device and the soundbar. Sony makes solid TVs!

Thank you JBGoode for your reply, how about the Apple TV+ app in your Sony tv? Do you have these issues too? I always prefer to use my Apple TV in my old Sony 2015 because other apps like Netflix, Vudu or movies anywhere look much better but I don’t have the new Sony A80j yet. Are you using any particular settings in your Apple TV to look better?

I use the following settings on my ATV 4K:

  • Format: 4K HDR*
  • Chroma: 4:2:2
  • Match Content: Range & Frame Rate
*Setting format to 4K SDR also works well, but you won’t see the 4K HDR aerial screensavers.

As far my Sony Bravia, I mostly use the Cinema picture mode. It is closest to natural color as I can find. You can always tweak it for your own eyes if you want to.

The Apple TV app on the TV itself works fine with no issues that I've noticed. The only settings I recommend for the ATV 4k is under Video >> match content, be sure match dynamic range and frame rate are both set to 'on' otherwise the ATV will force it's own HDR processing onto SDR content and it usually looks awful. Setting both to on will ensure that SDR content plays as SDR and it plays at the appropriate frame rate. Also of course be sure to use a good 4k UHD certified HDMI cable.

As for the TV, if you prefer the most accurate picture, just use the Custom preset and you're basically good to go. The TV is very color-accurate out of the box with that setting. Check Rtings.com for additional settings that may be of interest. There are several different picture processing options that may be of use for lower resolution content or if you like smoother motion (Cinemotion, Reality Creation, etc.) The Sony OLEDs have amazing picture quality and pretty much the best picture processing on the market- you're gonna love it! If you watch Netflix, be sure you have the 4k HDR plan - some of those shows with Dolby Vision look absolutely stunning. The pixel level control of highlights and perfect blacks/contrast have made for some of the best viewing experiences I've ever had with a TV. There's a depth to the picture that you can't get with an LED television.

I use an Apple TV with the A80J.

The only issue I had was some audio sync issues when I connected the Apple TV to my soundbar (and thence via HDMI to the TV).

With the Apple TV is connected directly to the A80J (which passes sound to the soundbar via eARC), no issues.

I have the 77" XBR A9G, the predecessor to the A80J. I use it with the previous generation ATV4K and they work perfectly together with my OG HomePods in Home Theatre mode. I never use the onboard apps on the TV. I also have a 55" Sony X950G which I use standalone with no ATV so I am familiar with the Android interface. The ATV provides a better user experience in my opinion but the standalone TV works fine as well. If you can, hardwire your ATV back to your router for the fastest, glitch free experience.

I have found turning Frame Rate Match off solves the audio lip sync issues. I have the ATV 4K first gen with a Sony A80J. I’ve also read on AVS Forums younshould set Chroma to 4:4:4 and thats how I’ve set mine.

i have a new apple tv 4k model A2169 (64gb), Sony A80J, and running a Sony HT-A9 via eARC. I'm running 4K Dolby Vision. No issues between the Apple TV and Sony A80J. Make sure to get a fast HDMI cable as Dobly vision needs it. i have it on Input 4 and set to enhanced format signal for that input. Looks awesome!

HDMI cable I purchased off Amazon:

Belkin Ultra HD High Speed HDMI Cable (2018) – 3.3ft/1m 4K HDMI Cable, Supports 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz, Dolby Vision/HDR 10 Compatible, 48Gbps

HT-A9 - for the Sony HT-A9 I do get occasional sound drop outs that can be both a few seconds of silence or complete sound drop off that requires a reboot of Apple TV. However, I think the problem is on the HT-A9 side as when I run the Apple TV alone with the A80J I don't have any issues. I suspect the drop outs are too much data and network connection isn't keeping up. Point being make sure you have a good connection for that setup. The problems very modest and the setup sounds great. Blade Runner 2049 in Dolby 4k with Atmos will blow your mind.

No. No DTS yet. Will try it later. Good luck.

Finally I got my new sony 77'' A80J, I wonder where is my best HDMI opcion to connect my new 2021 Apple tv, Hdmi 1 and 2 are 60hz and HDMI 3 and 4 support 120hz any idea? I don't have any game console, my other 2 devices are LG Ultra HD player and 2015 Nvidia shield tv, I like to reserve the HDMI 3 eARC for a future HT-A9.

I found that HDMI 4 was best for Dolby vision and the apple TV. I ran into trouble with 1&2 at that time.

Here is a great forum, if you are not already familiar with AVS, all about the A80J series TVs. Lots of good info on set up and picture settings in the first few pages of the thread. It's a lot to look through but thdree are some very helpful folks on the site so ask questions if you have any. They have helped me out a lot.

And in this link answers, for the most part, the question you had about which ports to use:

Enjoy your new rig.
