That's the name of the tour you need to take if tou want to truly experience a Norwegian fjorn in its fullest. This is a 12 hour trip you purchase at the Bergen Tourist Information Center. The first leg of your journey is by ferry from Bergen to Flam on a large catamaran ferry. The ferry takes you for 5 hours almost 100 miles up the Sognefjord to Flam. After a couple hours wait, you board the famous Flam railway for an incredible ride through the Flam valley. At Myrdal you leave the Flam Railway and board a Norwegian train bound for Bergen. It's an awesome trip that lets you experience Norway's longest, largest fjord which reaches a depth of 1200 meters. The fjord is huge and its surroundingmoutains and waterfalls are truly majestic. If you're a hardy traveler, i wholeheartedly recommend this trip.
Thank you for your wholeheartedly recommendation of our Sognefjord in a nutshell tour! Really appreciate it. You are right that this is the tour that gives "the most fjord for the buck". You will find the full menu of available tours at our homepage, where you can choose from a wider selection of tours, hotels and activities than you can from the tourist information center. Welcome back summer and winter! Take care, Heine, Sales- and Marketing director, Fjord Tours
We took the Norway in a nutshell tour from Bergen. Besides the cost of the tour, that for me was a little expensive, but according to Norway seems a fair price.
Note: Thereare anybody to guide you through the tour, you should be aware to take the right trains and to be on time on the stations, please notice that.
It was an amazing trip, for me the best was the Flamsbana train that goes through several tunnels most of them handly made in some years. I liked the most when the trains stops because there is a beautiful waterfall so close to the bridge and when tourists stop there, there is music and a women appears dancing close to the waterfall with the music rithm, its something really beautiful and impressive. Then you arrive to Flam, that is a village at the bottom of the Aurlandsfjord. Its a beautiful place where you can eat, do some shopping but you have to wait so mucho to take the Fjord cruise on the magnificent Aurlandsfjord and on the narrow Nærøyfjord. You have like 3 to 4 hours on Flam to do whaterver you want. So we took a bus excursion to Stegastein where there is a beautiful see point up to the Fiord. We booked directly at Flam information center and it costed around 30 euros per person. It lasts 1 hour more or less.
Once we got back we took a ferry to go through Aurlandsfjord and on the narrow Nærøyfjord in a 2 hour trip. It´s really amazing, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Fiords while you are seated in the uncover part of the boat. It is recommendable to have a warm jacket because sometimes where the sun gets covered by the Fiords could be cold outside. Also one can buy hot beverages on the boat at Norway prices of course.
Once we arrived to Gudvangen, we take a bus to Voss in order to take a train back to Bergen. During the bus route one can enjoy some nice views from waterfalls and the Fiords.
I am looking forward to visit some of the other fiords in the same way.
As I said food prices were a bit high so we bought somethings at bergen train station cafeteria and in Flam there is a supermarket where you can have sandwichs, salats and chips for a reasonable price and you can make your own menu as delicious as you want.
We went on the sognefjord tour starting in Bergen. It’s a long day but well worth it, you can choose to start by train or by boat. We settled for an early morning boat ride and weren’t disappointed. The sun having just risen and clearing clouds lends itself to some of the most imposing and breathtaking views you can imagine.
The boat itself and crew were all really welcoming and it was a very clean and well maintained ship. The boat stops at a few remote places I forget their names, but you can get off and explore. We decided not to and went all the way to Flåm. Again you can explore before continuing your journey or I’d imagine stay the night.
We then got on the Flåm railway, which in itself is a spectacular feat of engineering and the views of the mountainside are spectacular. Everything was in good order again the trains were immaculate and were on time, the staff were also pleasant and helpful.
The last part of our tour was the train back to Bergen from Myrdal. You can get the train to Oslo from here, but we were heading back to Bergen. I can’t say anything I haven’t already, the train and staff again were excellent and the views and scenery along the way nothing short of awe inspiring.
Definitely worth the money and couldn’t fault it.
Thank you for sharing your great experience with the Sognefjord in a nutshell tour! Happy to hear that you enjoyed every bit of it, and that the crew and means of transportation all made their positive contribution to your holiday.

We did both the Norway in a Nutshell and Hardanger in a Nutshell tour. They were both fantastic. I liked the Norway in a Nutshell a little better because of the train ride to Flam and the walls were steeper and the passages more narrow on the fjord cruise. The tour is basically a feast for your eyes. We saw more waterfalls than we have ever seen before. You go from seeing lush forests to sparse, snow covered landscapes above the tree line. We saw aqua ponds of water, black churches, winding/steep roads, and deep gorges. There were small villages where the only transportation in and out was via the ferry. This was a relaxing trip through the Norwegian countryside that you can only get via this type of transportation. It was pure pleasure.
Wow! Thank you for sharing your wonderful and inspirational review of the two very different Nutshell-tours. They both have their own character. Personally I am very fond of the Hardangerfjord in a nutshell tour, especially during the fruit blossoming in May/June. But I also understand your facination for the rough fjord landscape you experienced in the Norway in a nutshell tour. A good combination indeed. Take care, Heine, Sales- and Marketing director, Fjord Tours.
The Norway In A Nutshell route uses public transport all the way so you don’t HAVE to use a tour operator, although this is obviously easier.
We travelled Oslo-Bergen and wanted to break the travel rather than do it in one long day.
So we were able to leave Oslo on a later train to Myrdal and then catch an afternoon train to Flam where we stayed overnight at the Freitheim Hotel.
These legs can be booked direct on the NSB web site - if you are from Australia you need to pay via PayPal as on line credit card security rules at NSB don’t accept our cards.
We then booked the deluxe, electric boat from Flam to Gudvangen, which was excellent.
At Gudvangen we visited the new Viking Villiage. It’s early in its development but definitely worth a look.
The next leg is a bus to Voss that you can only buy from the driver. Look out for this - some buses leave from Gudvangen Village and others from the main road on the outskirts of town. Make sure you know which is which, we should have believed Google Maps instructions.
After the bus it’s another NSB rail trip to Bergen from Voss.
Buy your tickets early as the discount is significant.
Some legs of the journey, in regional rail, has allocated seating and the train has a cafe car and wifi. This would normally be Oslo-Myrdal and Voss-Bergen. But we ended up on a local train from Voss to Bergen with less facilities, which was also fine although it took 10-20 minutes longer.
Every part of this journey is incredibly scenic as you travel from sea level up through mountains and down again.
Booking the official Norway in a nutshell®-tour from Fjord Tours ensures easy booking, smooth connections, guaranteed seating, high flexibility, a thorough "Travellers guide", favourable transport, accomodation and activity rates - all in one booking process and with the backup of a customer center and 35 years of experience with this tour. It can be self booked, but be aware that there are certain risks, desk research and coordination needed to successfully do so. I am happy that you managed well and had a scenic tour. The fjord was beautiful, without a doubt. Totally worth seeing. But this particular tour was way too long at 10 hours. And you are basically on your own. There's no real tour, it's just tickets purchased as a package: boat, train, train in this case. I would tour a fjord, but take a much shorter one next time.
We appreciate your honest feedback. All the nutshell tours are quite extensive to ensure that our gests gets to experience the "jewel of the crown" of what the Norwegian nature has to offer. There are alternative and shorter tours to the outer fjord parts, but the more spectacular fjord experience demands more travelling. Luckily the travelling itself is a feast for the senses, and goes through magnificent scenery. Fjord Tours highly recommend to stay a night or two in some of the villages on the route, to explore the local culture, nature and activities and to further strengthen the impressions you will meet. You can customize your tour according to preferences and your itinerary will be visible and flexible in the booking process.
