Oslo to Bergen + Bergen Norway In A Nutshell combination

There's a bit of change of plan as I originally intend to do the Norway In Nutshell starting from Oslo to Bergen in 1 day.

Now we will take the direct train from Oslo to Bergen (the morning at 6am) for several hours and stay in Bergen for a few days. Then 2 days later, do NIN. Now, here's the thing, is it worth doing this NIN day trip despite we have done the direct train from Oslo to Bergen (the scenery and stuffs)? Or it will be a different experience given it will be a different route and the cruise/flam train that is offered?

If it is worth doing it, I just went to the NIN website and it gives me 2 option route whether I want to go for:

Starts: 8:30am

Bergen - Voss - Gudvangen - Flåm - Myrdal - Bergen

Ends: 6:20pm

OR

Starts: 8:08am

Bergen - Myrdal - Gudvangen - Flåm - Voss - Bergen

Ends: 8:40pm

Which option to take would be better? I suppose the 1st one given it finish earlier?

Also, for your reference, our intended travelling date for that day, I see the sunrise is 8am and sunset is 5:45pm, so therefore I am not sure if we might have missed the beautiful sunset for either since we like enjoy very beautiful scenery type of person

Thanks in advance

Whether it's worth it or not is up to you. You will do part of the train that you have previously done (Bergen Voss and Myrdal-Bergen), and on NiN you have the additional Naerøyfjord cruise and Flåm train, so basically educate yourself on both these parts and see whether you feel they are worth spending a whole day to see. If you have no other opportunity during your trip to see some fjord landscape then it might be worth it (or if you have a passion for train engineering). But the choice is up to you.

I would choose the first option (Bergen to Voss first) so that you are sure to do the most scenic bits with a good light, in the second option you will have less light for the fjord cruise.

Is there a particular reason you do not want to do NiN when traveling between Oslo and Bergen? It would save a lot of backtracking.

Or should I do NIN from Oslo to Bergen once instead is enough and there is no need to repeat Oslo to Bergen and then NIN Bergen - Bergen return trip?

I'm sorry I don't understand your second message. NiN is a side-track of the main Oslo to Bergen train line. You take the train in Oslo in the direction of Bergen, and for NiN you exit in Myrdal, take the train to Flåm, then the Naerøyfjord cruise to Gudvangen, then bus to Voss and there you board the train again for the last leg (which is also the end of the Oslo-Bergen train line). So if you do NiN on the way from Oslo to Bergen you have the best of everything (including the best scenery of the Oslo-Bergen train), and there is no need to repeat anything.

But in winter actually the sun sets early so it's a disadvantage when you do NiN in this direction (the light will not be the best for the cruise), an option would be to break NiN over two days with an overnight in Flåm.

Thanks for the suggestion

The reason for that because originally, we intended to do the Havila voyage from Bergen to Svolvaer and even I cannot book for 1/2 year in advance, it seems like they have increased a lot in the past year. I could already see that for 2 people, this segment is around EUR1500 for 2 people for 4 nights (not including food) and we feel it is not worth it. As far as I know, you can book the deck/reclining chair room for EU80 per person if it it is less than 24 hours. I was planning to do booking on 3 separate occasions as I was told it was ok but then later, i was told it is not allowed, so I decided to forfeit. Basically, its only missing the Alesund (pretty much the whole day outing when ship docks the whole day). So I will only join them from Bodo to Svolvaer which will arrive on the same day (6 hours trip departing 3:20pm and arriving at night 9:10pm) and only cost EUR30 for the trip ride!

So that means, I have a few extra days now before So my plan is to fly from Bergen to Bodo staying a couple of nights, do the RIB saltstraumen excursion, which is not a bad idea afterall because if I joined the cruise excursion, they only have 3 hours and we wanna kinda explore more.

But something just clicked my mind, I didn't understand myself why I would take the direct train to Bergen!

So I guess you are right, I am missing the best bit and would stick to my original plan i.e .Oslo to Bergen NIN, so from your last message, you just woke me up, so thank you

As you said the winter sunset early,

I just checked, if I was to go from Oslo to Bergen direction for NIN, Flam to Gudvangen, it departs @ 2:45pm and arrives @ 4:45pm, and as stated, sunset is around 5:45pm, so I am not missing anything great on the cruise? unless the best bit is from Gudvangen to Voss bus trip no? Even so, it arrives around 6pm, so unless you mean the best bit is from Voss to Bergen which becomes dark afterwards?

If so, since it is 1 hour trip, may I come back another day and do a Voss round trip from Bergen since its only 2 hours return because I don't really want to stay overnight in Flam

PS: I made a typo mistake for the above, it is EUR1500 for 3 nights, not 4 nights on the Havila cruise

Hurtigruten even more.

I remember when Havila was newly released beginning of last year, it was like several hundred EUR for 2, now it has more than double. I guess new ship are usually much cheaper

By end Feb it is light enough to do the NiN Oslo to Bergen in one day. Even better Bergen to Oslo. But if you want to visit Flåm anyway why not stay a night pn the way instead of backtracking?

Thanks Dyoll

We can't do Bergen to Oslo even if the scenic is really good as we will be heading up to the north afterwards all the way as far up to Trosmo, then Rovaniemi, then Helsinki..

So now we decided to stick with the original NIN from Oslo to Bergen one way, so backtracking is no longer required =)
