Characteristic

Sodium hydroxide can be in the form of white granules, flakes, rods. The substance is slightly slippery to the touch. Caustic soda dissolves well in water, ethanol, methanol. The additive has the ability to destroy most materials of organic origin (paper, leather, wood), it is also able to absorb carbon dioxide from the air, forming a crust of sodium carbonate.

Use

Sodium hydroxide is used in the food industry in its role as an acidity regulator in the production of ice cream, cocoa, caramel, chocolate, soft drinks. The substance is also added to bakery products. Caustic soda has long been used in some traditional cuisines (for example: German pretzels and Scandinavian fish dish Lutefisk). In addition, sodium hydroxide is allowed for addition to butter, marmalades, jams, jellies.

E 524 is widely used as a means of cleaning sewer pipes. Caustic soda is also used in cosmetics as an emulsifying and alkaline additive to shampoos, soaps, nail polish removers, creams. In the oil industry it is used for the production of oils and in the production of biodiesel.

Impact on humans

Sodium hydroxide should not be allowed on the skin and mucous membranes. This leads to strong chem. burns and to large-scale tissue damage. It is necessary to wash the affected area with a large amount of running water as soon as possible. If the substance is swallowed, rinse the mouth, larynx, drink as much fluid as possible (milk, water) and make an enema to cleanse the body.
