The U.S. Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is now on FamilySearch.org. The data is current as of October 2010. The most current updates will be available soon.
To search it, you can either search all historical records, and matching records from the index will be included in your search results. You can also search only the Social Security Death Index.
To search the Social Security Death Index without having to return to the blog for the link, follow these steps:
- Go to the FamilySearch search screen.
- Under the heading Browse by Collection, click USA, Canada, and Mexico. These links are located beneath the search fields.
- In the Place filters on the left side of the screen, click United States.
- Scroll down the list of records, and click U.S. Social Security Death Index. Because this collection is listed under U.S., it sorts at the beginning of the U's instead of after the collections whose names begin with "United States."
- Enter your search criteria, and click Search.
The U.S. Social Security Death Index is a database of death records that were created by the United States Social Security Death Index’s Death Master File. This useful file lists residents of the United States:
- Who had a Social Security Number (SSN)
- Who have died since 1962
- Whose death has been reported to the Social Security Administration
