Sarajevo: Inside 'sniper alley'
During the siege of Sarajevo, civilians regularly risked their lives crossing the city's main boulevard, which became known as "sniper alley".
Hiding in high-rise buildings, gunmen overlooked the front line, picking off unsuspecting victims on both sides.
Women and children, firefighters, UN peacekeepers and soldiers were all killed by snipers. A UN report into the calculated use of snipers recorded that many were killed with a single shot to the head or heart.
Martin Bell reports in July 1992.
