Released in 1989 in Europe and Japan only, Snakes 'N' Ladders was original guitarist Manny Charlton's last recording with Nazareth; a slick, sleek slab of Rock. Billy Rankin took on guitar duties for the follow-up, No Jive (1991), one of Nazareth's best long players, and his energy and powerful yet economical playing revitalized the group. Recorded in Germany, it bulges with hard-hitting rockers and high class ballads from a group high in confidence and was ecstatically received by the fans. The single 'Every Time It Rains' in particular is a true Nazi classic. Salvo.

I'll start with the case for the CD's. If you have the combo packs for the albums before these two and hate the awkwardly sized case and the fact that the songs are all put on one disk, you will be relieved to know this case is a normal size that gives you two different disks.

As for the music, it IS Nazareth. Even the liner notes will tell you that Snakes 'n' Ladders is not a good album, as the band members themselves hated it. But there are many strong tracks on the album that you will love. "Donna - Get Off That Crack", "Girls", and "See You See Me" (which reminds me of "See Me Feel Me" by the Who) are just a few of these great tracks. The album has many different sounds. There are lightning fast super hard rock songs (Like "Girls") and there are slower, bluesy tracks ("Like Lady Luck"). Then there are the real slow and sweet ballads like Winner on the Night. These are the weak points to the album in my opinion, but they are not bad songs. It's a Nazareth album from start to finish.

No Jive is not as harshly ridiculed as its predecessor. This album is widely considered the return of Nazareth after their struggle through the 80's. I remember hearing a few seconds of the first track, "Higher and Fire", and getting a very good feeling about the album. I felt better about it than I did about snakes 'n' Ladders the first time I heard it. But now I feel Snakes has more great, hard hitting tracks than No Jive. The song that stands out most to me (and made me decide I need this album) is "Right Between the Eyes". It has a really cool riff, fast and in your face. There are some songs, like "Every Time it Rains" that are reminiscent of old Naz. Thinkin' Man's Nightmare is an up tempo hard rock track that could have come off of Razamanaz. They even use that cool guitar effect used on "Bad Bad Boy" and "Woke Up This Morning". Don't forget of course one of their classics, This Flight Tonight, was re-recorded for this album, and they did a great job the second time around. "Tell Me That You Love Me" was a great ending to the album, begging with the beautiful little instrumental "Rowan Tree". It is my favorite of the feel good tracks on the album, and one of my favorite's overall from Nazareth.

I think these two albums are important for any Nazareth fan to have. I wouldn't say just die hard fans. The best albums came out of the 70's, but these two would still be a good introduction to the band. There are really good songs on this album and they do compare well with the old stuff. After reading this review, I should warn you that I like the "80's" sound, which does appear on these albums. But it is more subtle than the albums from the early 80's, and there are far more rock driven tracks than pop. I feel pretty confident that a Nazareth fan of any kind will not reject these albums.
