Tier List

The tier list is a list that ranks all characters in order of their potential to win under tournament conditions, assuming equal skill on the part of each player, based on analysis of the current metagame. Tier lists are commonly made for competitive fighting games and high level play, as well as strategy games that involve a selection of usable characters.

Characters' individual matchups with other characters also affect their placements on the list. However, one cannot determine the rankings of two characters without looking at their matchup spread as a whole. For instance, let's assume that character A is a hard counter for character B. However, character B has better matchups overall than the rest of the cast when compared to character A. As a result, character B would likely be ranked above character A. However, individual matchups can still have an effect on the positions of these two characters. Even if character A has a worse matchup spread, they have a chance to be ranked higher than character B if they have stronger matchups against the top ranked fighters, as character A would be more viable for competing at the top level of play when compared to character B.

Due to the game not being fully released yet, a tier list was created for the first playable E3 2018 demo of the game.

The Alpha 2018 demo tier list

The first "official" tier list was uploaded on November 25th, 2018 for the Alpha 2018 test, which was designed to test the game for early bugs. This was created by many members of various communities, notably from SmashBoards, and GameFAQs, who seemed to have a great impact on the tier placings. This was done by a voting poll, and getting the average placings of all of the characters. Note, that this tier list is very outdated due to the game being unfinished at this time.

Sonic has taken the top spot, while Donkey Kong took the last spot, mostly due to the general unpolishing he had at the time, as many of his attacks didn't connect well. Certain characters were controversial in their placements, specifically Agumon, Sandbag, and Black Mage.

SSBNS Tiers

The tier list made for Super Smash Bros For Nintendo Switch began development somewhat recently. Due to the large amount of characters, and even bigger amount of matchups, a combination of tournament, theories and online ranked data were put into consideration. This is the first tier list in the series to have over 7 "ranks"
