How the ProGuides SSBU tier list is decided
In the Super Smash Bros Ultimate community, tier lists exist to show the competitive viability of every character. Tier lists are largely opinion based and can vary based on how much you weigh results vs theoretical viability, but you'll still see many similar trends amongst many lists. Our tier list is based on opinions and insights from numerous Smash Ultimate professional players, and how these characters perform in each update. This list is updated when there is a general consensus that a certain character has either fallen out of favor, or come to greater strengths than they previously had.
How our tier list was calculated:
The position of each character is calculated based on numerous factors about said character, such as:
- The character's performance in lan tournament play
- The character's performance in comparison to other characters with respect to matchups
- The character's overall performance on the current legal stage list and set procedure
- The character's individual attributes, strengths, weaknesses, and versatility
After careful consideration of each of these 4 points, we placed characters in their according tiers. One important thing to consider about our tier list, is that it is not ordered within each tier. It is commonly conceived that one character may be at the top of a tier among other characters, while just not quite reaching the tier above. However we believe that it's much more fair to place characters in the same tiers, not in order because they fall under the same tier for multiple reasons.
There are a few special considerations for characters in the game here on our list. For Pokemon Trainer, we have Squirtle Ivysaur and Charizard here to recognize each character and to provide unique information on each on our character pages. However for our tier list, we consider them all equivalent as one character. Each Pokemon serves a special role, so we consider the overall strategy for using all three in each applicable matchup, and you'll never see this group move apart from each other. Additionally for Mii Fighters, we consider the potential option of every available special move and how they can affect matchups, and find the comfortable average of where to place them on our tier list - regardless of what special set they run.
It's also important to consider how influential each of the 4 points is in deciding our tier list. For us, tournament play and results is one of our largest factors. If a certain character in any meta of the game is having success across the board it will largely influence their placement on our tier list. We believe that tournament play is a very important influencer in how a character places on a tier list, because that's where the characters are tested to their upper limits and truly define success or failure.
Match up strength and versatility is also another important factor on our list. If a certain character has the ability to win a larger number of match ups across the board than another character does, this will largely impact their placement on our list as it typically signifies a greater rate of success in tournaments. The matchups a character is good at can also come into play. Joker is an extremely common and strong character, so fighters that have an easier time against Joker will be considered much stronger than characters who are good against Little Mac, one of the worst characters in the game. It's generally a stronger trait to excel in fewer matchups against meta-relevant top tier characters rather than stomping a slew of bottom tier characters.
We understand that tier lists might not reflect exactly what you may think of a certain character, and all characters do have the potential to win sets against another character in the right player's hands. However, when making a tier list we have to look at consistent placement of these characters in tournaments, and overall every aspect of the game. We carefully took into consideration each of the four points listed above into each character's placement on our tier list, and separated them based on each strength point put together.
