Alternative Quarantine (AQ), previously called Alternative State Quarantine (ASQ), is the process of quarantine at government-approved AQ hotels in Thailand at the traveler’s own expense.
Thailand AQ hotels that were previously advertised as ASQ hotels have been approved by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Defense, cover a wide range of different level hotels available for quarantine on arrival in Thailand.
Alternative Quarantine Package
Despite of renaming, Alternative Quarantine (AQ) packages will include all the features of Thailand ASQ. Normally, the quarantine package includes not only accommodation but also 3 meals a day, free WiFi, and private car transfer from either Don Mueang Airport or Suvarnabhumi Airport. A nurse is on call 24/7, and you will have your temperature taken and health checked 2 times a day. The package also includes COVID-19 testing that takes place on set days of quarantine.
The AQ / ASQ Thailand package often does not include consultation costs with doctors, transportation costs other than the airport pick-up, and any other treatments at the hospital other than COVID-19 tests. However, it depends on terms and conditions of each hotel. Please, check with the hotel before booking.
COVID-19 Insurance
As you most probably already know, all incoming foreign travelers to Thailand must provide health insurance covering COVID-19 treatment. The insurance certificate must be submitted when applying for Thailand Pass and needs to state explicitly that the health insurance is for 20,000 USD or more and COVID-19 is covered. If your insurance does not meet these requirements, you will not be allowed to travel to Thailand.

Important thing to note: the statement on AXA’s website says that if you will be tested positive for COVID-19 during quarantine (a big concern for most of travelers) and won’t have any symptoms, AXA will cover medical expenses incurred based on medical necessity regardless of the showing of symptoms.
