Slow movement for WVU baseball in national rankings, Pitt up next | West Virginia University Sports | wvnews.comSkip to main content
Even with sweeps, it can be tough to move up significantly in the rankings and RPI when the season gets to this point, and that was proved for WVU when Monday's polls came out.
Although the Mountaineers did advance one position to No. 20 in this week's Baseball America Top 25, they did not move back into those selections in any of the other college baseball rankings. WVUÂ did earn a few more points in the USA Today Coaches poll, but stands no better than 30th with 26 points.
The same was true in the RPI, although it must be remembered that winning isn't going to automatically move a school up, as the calculations look at every school and their relative accomplishments. There, West Virginia is currently No. 36, five places behind Kansas State, three spots behind UCF, one ahead of TCU and five in front of Texas Tech.
The better news is that with its weekend sweep, and two losses by league leader Oklahoma, the Mountaineers, 14-7 in the conference, are just one game behind the Sooners (15-6), and tied with Oklahoma State. Texas is one game in arrears of WVU at 13-8, while Kansas is another game back at 12-9.

Up next, West Virginia travels to PNC Park, the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, for a Tuesday, April 30, game which is set for a 7 p.m. first pitch.
The game will air nationally on ESPN2.
Junior JJ Wetherholt leads the Mountaineers with a .328 batting average while Kyle West has a team-high 11 home runs and 36 RBI. Junior Grant Hussey hit his 34th career home run on Sunday against Baylor, just one shy of the program record currently held by Jedd Gyorko (2008-10) and Tim McCabe (2000-03).
The Mountaineers won the first meeting with Pitt this year, taking a 6-3 victory in Morgantown on April 16.
Pitt is 18-22 this season. Most recently, the Panthers took two of three in a non-conference series against Bryant.Dom Popa leads Pitt with a .329 batting average while Jayden Melendez has a team-high 13 home runs. Phil Fox has a 1.30 ERA in 17 appearances out of the bullpen to lead the team while collecting five saves.

Kyle West has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
West hit .600 (6-for-10) on the week and tallied a 2.092 OPS in a three-game sweep over Baylor. He had multiple hits and at least one RBI in all three games, hitting home runs on Friday and Saturday.
The Hedgesville, West Virginia native added doubles in the final two games as well and was all over the basepaths, scoring eight runs and stealing two basesÂ
West is the second Mountaineer to earn the award this season after Derek Clark was named both Big 12 Pitcher and Newcomer of the Week on April 8.
Overall, it is the 15th instance that a WVU baseball player has been named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
