WARNING: DO NOT BUY THIS FILM ON BLU-RAY!!! NO SOUND!!! I had to order and return 2 separate copies, but have given up at this point. I don't know about the DVD version, but it is obvious that when the Blu Ray version was produced the audio didn't make it onto the disc since both orders had the same problem. The trailer at the front of the film had sound, but the movie itself is silent. Very disappointing. But at least Amazon has a good return policy.

As for the film itself, I saw it long ago in the early 1980s and loved the film. Paul Sorvino was wonderful and it was a great story. I ordered the film because I remembered how I liked it and wanted to see it again. Now I'll order the DVD version and hopefully that one will have sound.

Paul Sorvino is terrific as a newsman who falls deeply in love with a ballerina (real life ballerina Anne Ditchburn). This rarely seen 1978 romantic tearjerker has a pretty good pedigree. It was directed by John Avildsen and is the follow up film made just after his Oscar winning film “Rocky”. The music by Bill Conti is outstanding. The film itself is an old fashioned love story that is the type of film they just don’t make anymore. The blu ray will be the first time this rare film has been released on any format. ****

What is little known today by the public about this disastrous follow-up by director John Avildsen to his Oscar-winning 1976 "Rocky" ( for which he also won the Oscar for Best Director) is that it was his personal act of deeply embittered vengeance against producer and music tycoon Robert Stigwood for firing him off the directorial position of a teenybopper idol's not-very-promising low-budget starring vehicle with the cumbersome and unwieldy title "The Tribal Rites of The New Saturday Night", later to be changed to "Saturday Night Fever". Intimidated by Norman Wexler's edgy, foul-mouthed, and very dark-hued screenplay, his romanticist and naif-like sensibilities clashed violently with Stigwood's desperate ambitions to make John Travolta into a respectable movie star, as well as Stigwood's more cynical and libertine outlook on life, and the mixture did not bode well. The irony of it all is that there were absolutely no expectations around "Fever" whatsoever either by the studio or the critics before it unleashed itself on the world and cinema history, as it was considered to be nothing more than teenage junk that was fated to play two weeks on the bottom half of a drive-in double bill. Alternately, "Slow Dancing" was expected to be another prestigious Oscar triumph for Avildsen, considering it's pedigree and it's more classical and "artistic" adult subject matter. As it turned out, the cinema gods had other plans, and the deeper and more searing truths of a brilliantly acted and masterful coming-of-age film, with it's ambiguous ending and unexpectedly tragic climax, thoroughly trumped a former Oscar winner's maudlin, trite, pretentious, horribly acted, directed, written, and poisonously sentimental wallow in cheap feel-goodism. Film students, take note.
