Airlines that fly from Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, and Thai Smile all offer flights from Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi Airport to Chiang Mai. This is the second busiest domestic route from the airport (the busiest is to Phuket).

Nok Air, R Airlines, Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Thai Smile all offer flights from Bangkok-Don Mueang Airport to Chiang Mai. This is the busiest domestic route from this airport.

There are numerous flights to Chaing Mai every day, averaging at one an hour. As this route is so popular we recommend booking your flights in advance.

Terminal Information – Departing

Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi: the check-in level for domestic flights is on the fourth floor of the airport. Once you've gone through security you can proceed to the correct departure area, which will be noted on your boarding card. The airport has a wide range of facilities, from restaurants and shops to spas and playgrounds. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Bangkok-Don Mueang: Flights to Chiang Mai leave from the Domestic Terminal. There's a small range of places to grab a bite. A noodle shack and a Thai restaurant are rooted in local flavour while a Burger King and KFC offer a taste of the west. There's a gift shop and a book shop in the domestic terminal, although both are fairly basic.

Terminal Information – Arriving

Chiang Mai Airport is less than two miles away from the city centre.  There's a taxi rank at the north side of the terminal. A taxi into the city will charge a flat rate of 160*฿ (just under £3), or 200*฿(about £3.65) if you're going to the Arcade Bus Terminal. Bus number 4 goes to the city centre and costs 15*฿ (about 30p) while tuk-tuks charge about 60*฿ (around £1.10) per person.

Practical Information

Visitors to Thailand are required to carry their passport at all times, even when they're not flying. Although you don't usually need a passport to fly domestic, as a foreigner you will probably be asked to show your passport and entry visa. Try to arrive at the airport about two hours before your flight departs to give yourself plenty of time to get through security.

What to expect in Chiang Mai

There is no time difference between Chiang Mai and Bangkok. The currency is Thai Baht (฿). The hot season is from March to May, when you can expect average temperatures of 37°C. May to October is the wet season and November to February is the 'cool' season, although temperatures still sit around the 30°C mark. Chiang Mai is a lot cheaper than Bangkok. Expect to pay half of what you would in the capital for food and drink.
