International travel plug adapter guide

It's time to brush up on the right international travel plug adapter for your trip.

As we’re preparing to possibly travel abroad again soon (thanks to the UK government regularly adding new destinations to the green list) it’s time for a refresher on travel essentials. An international travel plug adapter is one of those gadgets you only need when you trave, but you really can’t travel without them. So many places around the world have different voltage and plug types, and not having an adapter means you won’t be able to charge your electronic devices. To spare you the trouble and confusion on whether you need a travel adapter, we’ve collated a list of the most popular plug types used per country and region, along with helpful illustrations.

Note: Make sure to get the latest in our up-to-date travel briefing for the UK before booking any trip. And for the latest guidance, check Skyscanner’s Coronavirus Travel AdviceFCDO foreign travel advice and local government advice for the country you’re planning to visit.

Everything you need to know about your international travel plug adapter

When it comes to finding the right international travel plug adapter you can be spoilt for choice. There are USB travel adapters, voltage converters, differing plug types, wireless adapters, dual travel adapter/converters and even universal travel adapters. Choosing what’s right for you depends on your needs.

You may need a transformer that can convert the voltage safely to use on your laptop or phone, as well as an adapter if the plug type is different from the UK. However, you can get an adapter and travel converter combo unit, and in most instances adapters are capable of handling voltage between 100v and 240v. But to make sure, check on the adapter itself as this information will be marked there.

Some plug types are used across wider regions. A European plug will typically be type C, whereas a US plug type will typically be type A. However, in Asia you will find that different plug types are used across different countries. These are broad rules and to be safe and prepared you are better off understanding exactly which plug type is used in the region you are travelling to. Check out our comprehensive list of plug types:
