Father lived at home and went as a day boy to St Paul's School in Hammersmith. Iin those days his school chum was Harry (H H R) Thackthwaite. Harry had an English father and a French mother. During holidays, they both went to stay with Harry's aunt at Chateau Esquelbec, near Dunkirk. Father spoke of fishing for luce with frogs in the moat. After he left St Paul's he went to a school in Lille for two years to improve his french.
  Father met my mother at a dinner party held at his family friends. They were friends of Mr F C Wise who worked in Berkeley Square as the advertising manager for Fulford Williams, a pharmaceutical company. Mother worked for the friends as a home help. A few weeks later Mother met Father in the post office in Richmond, Surrey. She plucked up courage and asked him round to tea as the owners were away. A friendship florished which ended in marriage at St Steven's church Twickenham and a reception at Richmond Hill. Mother had no father to give her away and everything was paid for by Mr F C Wise. Mother's sisters were there to support her, but she felt a little inferior. Strange to think her cousin, Harold Page, was head boy at St Paul's earlier and went on to get a double first in classics from Cambridge. The era when people were said to have a "station in life" was still current. Imagine the reverse situation; Charles Grandmother Eliza, the butcher's daughter marrying Willam Taylor the actuary, bank agent and inventor. When Olga had gone to live with Hilda Taylor in Driffield, who still worked in the bank, she was scolded for taking a ride on the seat of the bicycle belonging to the the butcher's delivery boy.It's a funny old world. Father and Mother lived in Cranford and Mr F C Wise built a house near the "Traveller's Friend" at the end of the Great West Road. Marjory's mother and father lived at Harlington near Heathrow Airport. Kenneth would push the old lady Curle (Nash) in a bath chair at great speed as they walked between the two homes.
  Father worked as a clerk with Fleetway Press in Farringdon Street. During the war he worked at the Mars factory in Slough and joined the Fire Brigade there. He was called to London on the night when St Paul's nearly went up in flames. The pictures of the dome looming up and above the flames are full of meaning and symbolise the resiliance of the Londoners to the enemy's attempt to break their spirit.
  His old friend Harry Thackthwaite had gone to Oxford University and was a Major in the RASC, when he was approached to work for the SOE RF and liase with the French in London over a combined effort in resistance in France. Harry was in France for 4 months undercover, but was recalled when the "White Rabbit", his friend Yeo Thomas, was arrested.
  After Mr F C Wise died he was followed shortly by his wife and Father moved to Addlestone, Surrey. He retired at 65 years and later, went to live at West Moors, Dorset. Sometime after 1980 he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He was nursed by his wife, who devoted herself to him. Mother said he was esier to get on with in his old age. He could be difficult, frustrated and bad tempered. He liked to have an easy life, looked after by his wife. Stress, decisions and responsiblity would make him uneasy and easily upset. As children, we only asked him whether we could do things after he had eaten his dinner. He was unapproachable on returning from work. He thoroughly enjoyed visits from his brother Kenneth and they would be joking and laughing all the time. The same was true when Jack came from Australia, but this was very seldom. Father liked to pun as it showed he had a good command of the Enlish language and he disliked poor grammar and pronunciation! He liked to visit his brother's, Ralph, grave and looked after it. His death had upset him badly. He used to visit the battle fields of France, for he remembered the area well and could describe Ypres and its cloth hall from memory. He liked gardening and grew beautiful roses.
