1  Introduction

History of this site: it started as a Netspace webspace http://sjharker.customer.netspace.net.au/ which worked well until mid February 2018 when the server crashed. It was restored in May, but all files and directories were owned by root (the system user), so I could not remove old or install new files. Finally in February 2019 iiNet support suggested I try http://members.iinet.net.au/ ∼ sjharker@netspace.net.au/ which I had not been told of previously. This worked for less than a week. Since iiNet now has an overall account of sjharker_nbn I decided to try http://members.iinet.net.au/ ∼ sjharker_nbn/which is the current iteration (and seems to work for a while). I completed both BSc and MSc degrees at the former Department of Physics, now School of Physics, Monash University and a PhD with Glen Stewart at the former School of Physics, now part of the School of Science, ADFA (academically part of UNSW). I worked as a postdoc at ADFA with Don Chaplin and Wayne Hutchison. In 2000 I worked in the Netherlands as a postdoc with Paul Gubbens at the then Interfaculty Reactor Institute, now part of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Reactor Institute Delft.

1.1  Family

• Some photographs from my grandfather during WWI are shown here. A selection of scans of some prints from photograph albums of my grandfather Alpine Way 1921, Album2 1921 and State Rivers.
• As a matter of military interest I have scans of a small selection of photographs taken by my father during the Korean War while serving with 77 Squadron RAAF as Engineering Officer at Kimpo, KimpoB, Seoul, Villages and Towns in Korea and some while attached to No. 491 Maintenance Squadron, for example on a RN carrier while recovering aircraft ditched at sea.
• Additionally some taken in Japan around the same time, at Iwakuni, Kintai and Tokyo.

• The ftnchek program performs syntax checking of Fortran programs (still F77).

• For a GPL'd Fortran (F77) compiler see g77 (or gcc), there are now two projects for a GPL'd F95 compiler: g95 and gfortran (see also this wiki).
• The NIST, netlib and statlib sites have useful routines and resources.
• Ghostscript and related tools deal with PostScript. See also SourceForge. It can also be obtained from CTAN mirrors (see section 4.1) or this Australian mirror.
• The gnuplot plotting package (sourceforge). The pgplot, plplot and psplot graphics subroutine libraries.
• The ImageMagick program allows graphic format changes. Australian mirror AARNET. The Gimp is a general graphics image manipulation program.
• The R statistics and graphics program (Australian mirror) is a GPL'd equivalent of S+. A web link to the documentation of the latest version is given here.
• General Linux sites: linux.org and linux.com. An Australian general site. See also Security and documentation (Australian mirror) and Printing. Some distributions: Redhat, Debian, Mandrake, S.U.S.E and Yellow Dog (PPC). Some Australian suppliers: Linux System Labs. See also Linux Australia. • Maxima is a GPL'd symbolic maths program (for more detail see sourceforge) somewhat similar to the commercial Maple and Mathematica. Australian mirror.
• Octave is a GPL'd program very similar to the commercial Matlab.

• The kermit communications program.

2.9  Photography

I use an old manual Minolta SRT-101 with the Minolta 28 mm f/2.8, 35-70 mm f/3.5, 58 mm f/1.4, 135 mm f/3.5, 200 mm f/4 and 300 mm f/4.5 lenses plus the Vivitar extension tube set. See the Minolta User's Group (MUG: nl, us) for more information. See also PhotoZone, photo.net and Tony Spadaro. Initially I had my slides and negatives digitised commercially. More recently I bought an ACER (now BENQ) ScanWit 2720S film scanner. I use Ed Hamrick's Vuescan which is much superior to the supplied scanning software. A useful site for information on scanning is Wayne Fulton's Scantips.

3  World War One

Some photographs from my grandfather during WWI are shown here. Most of the rest of this section concerns WWI Aviation. Some performance data for WWI aircraft taken from various sources is given in this document. These can be compared, for the British, with an article of unknown provenance and a 1920 Flight table. Some summaries of British aircraft test results of which the first fourteen are of interest for WWI (14 MB, 64 pages). A STAe test report on a captured Fokker DVII is of interest. The Cranfield Aerade site includes some translated German WWI documents through the Cranfield searchable NACA archive and some ACA/ARC technical reports. A searchable archive of scanned images of Flight Magazine. Some notes I took when reading Hooton's War over the Trenches; also available in a spreadsheet format.

4  L^AT_EX

I have been a satisfied user of T_EX and friends since the late 1980's, particularly L^AT_EX. L^AT_EX is a set of macros based on the T_EX typesetting language, both of which are available in free, shareware and commercial versions for most platforms (e.g. unix, VMS, DOS, Windows and Mac). Most of these implementations are described on the T_EX Users Group homepage (see section 4.1). I wrote a local thesis style adfathesis.cls which can also be obtained from Comprehensive T_EX Archive Network (CTAN) sites and mirrors, in particular try the UNSW CTAN mirror (see section 4.1). Another style that may be useful locally is a modification of the standard letter class to have a letterhead that is a reasonable approximation to the ADFA letterhead (we don't have the Optima font on the Physics computer). This is phsletter.cls with it's options fax and memo. This class may be modified to suit other departments and may be obtained from phsletter.zip,

4.2  Generally useful L^AT_EX styles

• amslatex package that helps achieve improved mathematics typesetting.
• booktabs style for improved tables.
• endfloat style which helps with archaic submissions requiring figures and tables at the end.
• fancyhdr style which gives more control of the header.
• ntgclass classes with more attractive layout than the default.
• memoir another class with more attractive layout.
• setspace style which is useful for double spaced text.
