Records abond for Sunspot Cycle 24! But that doesn't mean we can suddenly work all the DX. Had lots of success with the Pacific but Africa and especially West Africa remains difficult even in boom times.

Currently we have TL, 3X and S0 all active and while I am on the subject lots of PJ activity too but as per usual they are working NA, EU, JA.

Oh well that's part of the fun isn't it, if it was so easy we all would have DXCC HR#1.

The good news is that after many years I have finally worked a C3 on CW.

Despite recent activity, Mt. Athos remains an enigma to us over here in VK, can the Monk get his sigs to penetrate our shores? One day, we hope.

As you can see above, the solar flux numbers are constantly above 100 now and SSN are not far behind. After many years in the duldrums the higher bands have finally come to life!

3D2R, T32C and YJ0VK are currently active though not easy to get on the high bands.

Just got news today that CY0 is going to be active again in mid-2012, so keep a look out for that.

An apology to Andy VE9DX, he is converting Vlad's QSOs (UA4WHX) from paper to computer, so that they can be uploaded to LOTW etc. Many thanks to Andy! And it was great to see Vlad active again earlier this year, this time from Egypt, I am not sure what has happened to him since as I haven't seen any recent activity.

There is a team going to 3X land this month, lets hope I can get them on the high bands!

SSN=0 today and SFI=87, Ol' Sole has a hit a flat patch. We are due for a rise in the spots and the flux, and there is a spot about to arrive as I type this on the eastern limb.

ST0 team have gone home and things have gotten a bit flat. Did manage to work a few EUs on the WAE CW on the weekend, must try and do this more often.

Nothing really exciting DX wise on the horizon at present, though equinox will be upon us shortly and maybe if we get a lift with the SSN numbers we may get an opportunity for Asia on 6m.

Conditions seem to be on the improve with the solar flux hitting 100 once again. There is still talk of this solar cycle not being like the old ones but we'll just see about that.

With the recent activity of ST0 I have been a bit more active. If you have found them hard to contact it's mainly due to the high demand, the pileups have been horrendous, not to mention the frustrated mob that can't get through and then divert to QRMing everyone. If you don't get through, instead of QRMing everyone, turn off your rig and have a coffee break, you will find it easier the next time.

Oh and by the way, VE9DX Andy, is currently uploading the UA4WHX african logs to LOTW, Many thanks to Andy!

Well what a week, with the Solar Flux in the 80s, 12m is opening daily now. More and more ops are getting on the band.

10m openings are becoming more common too.

I am currently trying to make my 40m vertical more multibanded.

This has been achieved by running parallel wires up the side of the antenna and then connecting them to the ground plane (yes, the ground plane!)

Got a new rig a couple of weeks ago (IC-7600) and have had success in hooking it up to my PC, one standard USB cable is all that was require. I have Civ/Cat control as well as the ablilty to do data/digital communication to the rig.

Went out to the NCRG (Northern Corridor Radio Group) VK6ANC on Sunday to witness the opening of the

'Neil Penfold State Amateur Radio Centre', honouring VK6NE Neil Penfold's contribution to Amateur Radio.

If you have sent a QSL card or received a QSL card via the VK6 Bureau in the last 10 years or so, then it would have passed through Neil’s very capable hands.

Neil is a very humble man but has had a tremendous influence on Ham Radio in Australia over the past several decades, including being the WIA national president.

If there are any hams out there that might remember or know Neil, now would be a good time for them to pass on their congratulations.
Let’s celebrate his life, he really is a legend over here.

Last weekend propagation was quite good with SFI up in the 90s due to recent sunspot activity...

Worked about 20 stations in the PSK63 contest including 4Z4DX and CN8KD.

Only notable DX worked was 5A7A (new one), managed to get him on 20 SSB and 30CW so far.

I have noticed that when the MUF is up it delays propagation intensity on 30m. 5A7A was coming in strong at 1100z on 30m initially then last night they weren't strong until 1600+z as the SFI is on the decline I think we will find 15m closing earlier giving way to 20 and 30m earlier....

With SFI now around 70 slim pickings on the bands;

Heard VK6TQ working an SM, DQ2006X on 10m with the help of some E layer activity, but generally very poor condx.

Wasn't able to hear FW8AA or F0/F6CTL on 20m when the band would normally have been open.

Did make my first PSK63 contact this weekend with ZL3RG, it's a lot quicker than PSK31 and perhaps more stable,

you do have to be a faster typist if you are not using macros...

Did work a new one! YU6DZ on 20CW for Montenegro.

Worked 9J2VB on 80 SSB this morning. He got my call wrong (VU) but exchange of reports was good.
