SEPTEMBER 2007 - Wither the Constitution, Luncheon Seminar

Professor Greg Craven is a lawyer and academic. Greg has recently been appointed Vice Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University. Greg served as Crown Counsel to the Victorian (Jeff Kennett) Government from 1992-95. Professor Craven holds a chair as Professor of Government and Constitutional Law and was Foundation Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame Australia. He was also a Reader in Law at the University of Melbourne. Currently, he is Deputy Vice Chancellor Strategy & Planning, Curtin University. Greg was the Founding Executive Director of The John Curtin Institute of Public Policy (JCIPP) Curtin University, WA 's largest university public policy think-tank. His most recent book is Conversations with the Constitution (University New South Wales Press, 2004). Greg will discuss Authentic Leadership drawing on his years of experience as a legal adviser, academic and political and social commentator.

Dr Harry Phillips is a Parliamentary Fellow (Education) at the Parliament of Western Australia and an Adjunct Professor at Edith Cowan University and Curtin University of Technology. Throughout his career as a teacher and lecturer Harry has been at the forefront of political and civic education in Western Australia. He has served for over 30 years on numerous committees including the Politics and Law Syllabus (and examination) Committee at the Curriculum Council (and its predecessor the Board of Secondary Education). Submissions and representation to promote civic education have been made to various parliamentary and governmental committees, sometimes with resounding success leading to the establishment of the Western Australian Constitutional Centre. Part of the 'leadership' has been the publication of a range of political and civic education texts, works on several aspects of Western Australian history, and particularly at election times commentary in the media as a political analyst.

AUGUST 2007 - How Leaders Think, Breakfast Seminar

John Harman has written for a living all his working life, first in advertising, then for many years as a journalist and for the past twenty years, as a popular novelist, scriptwriter, ghost writer, corporate writer, manuscript assessor, mentor and teacher of creative writing. He has published four major novels in the UK and written scripts for many popular television series, including early episodes of The Bill. John has had over a dozen non-fiction books published and has ghost written many books - from popular romantic fiction to corporate histories, biographies and autobiographies. John conducts workshops and seminars on creative writing and on creativity. John has recently worked for the Rio Tinto Future Fund writing human interest stories about leaders in the Pilbara & Kimberley communities who are involved with community development. The stories include: apprentice training schemes in the Pilbara; Aboriginal education in the Kimberly; bio-diversity projects; and support for a medical centre in the Gascoyne. John has recently been in the Pilbara running workshops on creativity and creative writing for Rio Tinto and Woodside. As an educator, John has taught at the University of Cambridge Board of Continuing Education in the UK and at the University of California Summer Schools in the US. Here in WA he teaches for The University of WA, Edith Cowan Uni., Fellowship of Australian Writers and The WA State Literature Centre. In 2006 he was appointed an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Communication & Contemporary Arts at Edith Cowan University. John conducts workshops for UWA Organisational & Staff Development Service on how to improve the writing ability of their staff. John is a citizen of Australia under a �Distinguished Talent Visa' sponsored by the Australian Society of Authors.

AUGUST 2007 - Women in Academia

Emeritus Professor Lesley Parker, AM FTSE is an Educational Consultant, formerly Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor Curtin University (1997-2004), and Inaugural Director of the national Carrick Institute of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (2005-2006). Professor Parker is also chair of the Board of Directors of education.au limited, the national company responsible for providing on-line support to Australian education and training. She was Foundation Chair of WA Curriculum Council (1997-2003) and a member of Council of the National Science and Technology Centre (1997-2003). She has more than 25 years' experience in leadership, research, teaching and policy in all sectors of education, at State, national and international levels. Professor Parker has published extensively, especially in the areas of curriculum reform in education and gender equity in education. While maintaining a commitment to science and mathematics education at Curtin, she is also currently working on educational projects in Australia and overseas.

Professor Fiona Haslam McKenzie has a background and PhD in political geography, researching the effects of demographic and economic change on rural communities in WA. She has extensive experience in population and socio-economic change, regional economic development and analysis of regional and urban social indicators and has published widely and undertaken work for the corporate, small business sectors and all three tiers of government, both nationally and in WA, including a research project for the Federal Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, reviewing statistical representation of women in rural, regional and remote regions. Professor McKenzie was until July 2007 the Acting Executive Director of the John Curtin Institute of Public Policy at Curtin University. Professor Fiona McKenzie is currently the Director of the Housing and Urban Research Institute of Western Australia, a joint venture between Curtin and Murdoch Universities. She joins academic colleagues and oversees an Australian Research Council project understanding the impact of gender diversity on regional boards.

JUNE 2007 - The Practice of Leadership

Emeritus Professor Geoffrey Bolton held the office as Chancellor of Murdoch University from November 2003 to December 2006. Widely recognised as Western Australia's most eminent historian, Professor Bolton has engendered an interest in local history and its impact on today's society for more than four decades. He has authored 13 books, countless papers and he is a frequent contributor about historical matters on ABC radio. Professor Bolton's academic achievements include holding Chairs in History at 4 Australian universities and visiting fellowships at Oxford and Cambridge. His professional associations include Fellowships in the Royal Historical Society, the Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, the Royal Society of Australia. He was the ABC Boyer Lecturer in1992. Professor Bolton has received many awards for his work including the Professions Category of the Citizen of Western Australia (2003) for a lifetime of teaching and promoting Western Australia 's history, the NSW Premier's Centenary of Federation Award (2001), a Centenary Medal (2003), the Museum Medal (2003) and the Frederick Watson Fellowship (2004) to undertake research at the Australian National Archives. His work as General Editor of the Oxford History of Australia series and his authorship of Volume Five of that publication was acknowledged with an offer of the Order of Australia. During his University career, Professor Bolton was a Senate member and Pro Chancellor and a member of the Murdoch University Planning Board that built the foundations of Murdoch in 1970-73. WA Australian of the Year, 2005; Officer of the Order of Australia ; married to Carol Grattan, two sons, four grandchildren.  Who's Who lists Professor Bolton's recreation as �sleep'.

MAY 2007 - Women in Politics, Breakfast Seminar

Our Panel

Dr Elizabeth Constable MLA is the Independent Member for Churchlands (1991). She was the first woman elected to our State Parliament as an Independent. Her involvement in Parliament has included: Member Standing Committee on Intergovernmental Agreements & Uniform Legislation Schemes; Standing Committee on the Anti Corruption Commission; & the Standing Committee on Health and Education. Elizabeth was a Lecturer prior entering politics & her qualifications include MA, Dip.Ed., Ed. M., and Ph D. Liz is passionate about education, the status of women and open and transparent government.

Katie Hodson-Thomas MLA is the Liberal Member for Carine and the seat's inaugural parliamentary representative (1996). Katie's involvement in Parliament has included: Deputy Chairman of Committees; Acting Speaker Legislative Assembly; Parliamentary Secretary Minister Health; Shadow Minister for Transport & Tourism, Road Safety and Environment. Katie is currently Shadow Minister for Tourism and Small Business and is Deputy Chairman of the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee. Katie has also represented WA on behalf of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Giz Watson MLC was elected to the Legislative Council for the North Metropolitan Region in 1997. She is Chairperson Estimates & Financial Operations Committee; Deputy Chair Legislation Committee. Giz holds a BSc in Environmental Science. She ran her own building business for 12 years. Her interest in ecology, peace and social justice led to involvement with community groups on coastal and marine issues, urban bushland, community housing and opposing arms trade. Demonstrating her commitment to peace, Giz trained nonviolent direct action groups for peace camps while in the UK.

Jaye Radisich MLA is the Labor Member for Swan Hills. Jaye is the youngest woman ever elected to the Western Australian Parliament (2001). She holds a BA., and LLB. Prior entering politics she worked as a cosmetic consultant and research officer. Jaye has recently been appointed Parliamentary Secretary. Her other Parliamentary activities have included: Acting Speaker Legislative Assembly; Member Joint Standing Committee.

NOVEMBER 2006 - Launch - Society and Law Series: A Question of Justice

Our Panel

Glen Kelly is chief executive of the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council (SWALSC) WA. SWALSC recently won a Federal Court ruling recognising Noongar peoples' native title rights in and around the Perth area. Glen is a Nyoongar and an environmental scientist who has worked on Indigenous involvement in managing protected areas including �hotspots'. Glen is totally passionate about protecting country and securing the human rights of his people.

Todd Shand heads the Wray & Associates' Chemical Technology Group. Todd graduated from the University of WA with first class honours in chemistry. He completed his Bachelor of Laws in 1997. Todd is a prolific author and qualified as a Patent Attorney in 2000. He is a member of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia & New Zealand, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, and associate member of the Institute of Chemical Engineers. Todd has extensive litigation experience in relating to pharmaceutical patents and is passionate on securing the human rights of impoverished and oppressed people.

John Prior is currently working as a Barrister in the Francis Burt Chambers. John is Board Member of the Law Society. He has worked in the fields of Litigation (Criminal, Civil and Commercial), Family Law, Mining Law and Real Property Law. He has also practiced in Courts in Petty Sessions in Perth Metropolitan area and country regions. The work involved pleas in mitigation and defended matters, under both state and federal legislation. John has conducted similar work in Children's Court in Perth Metropolitan area. He has practiced in the District Court and Supreme Court of Western Australia both as counsel and instructing solicitor.

Gningala Yarran-Clanton graduated with a Bachelor of Law 2002 and was WA's first Aboriginal Judges' Associate with Justice Robert French. She was admitted as a Solicitor/Barrister in the Supreme Court of WA May 2004. Gningala rose to become the first Aboriginal WA State Prosecutor. Gningala is a Wongi/Yamitji woman on her mother's side and Nyoongar/Gitja on her father's side. She currently assists WAPOL train Aboriginal Police Liaison Officers. Gningala facilitates workshops with the Sexual Assault Referral Centre WA being totally committed to supporting Aboriginal and Indigenous innocent victims of violence, aggression and abuse.

Annaliza Jackson will interview the panel at the Breakfast Seminar, Thursday 20th November 2006. This will also be our special Christmas event for 2006.

Speaker Profile: Dr Irene Froyland is currently the Director Corruption Prevention, Education & Research, Corruption and Crime Commission of WA. Dr Froyland is responsible for a new function in the corruption prevention area in Western Australia � helping government organisations, ranging from departments to local government and boards to improve their ability to combat misconduct and corruption. This directorate will focus on promoting ethical values in government. Irene is an Adjunct Associate Professor with Edith Cowan University. Irene has a PhD in Criminology, a MA (Psychology) and a Dip. Ed. Irene has written widely in the fields of justice and law enforcement and worked internationally supporting agencies in these fields.

Annaliza Jackson is Executive Director of her own consultancy and a Research Fellow with the Business School at the University of Western Australia on Leadership Integrity and Behaviour in Organisations and is an Adjunct Associate Professor with the JCIPP, Curtin University. Annaliza has written widely, winning first prize for her contribution to �Forza e' Corragio � Give Me Strength� an ethnography on the lives of Italian migrant women. Most recently, Annaliza had an article titled �Leading by Example: A Lesson in Governance� published by Monash University, GovNet (An ARC project). Since 1990, Annaliza's passion for leadership has led to the development of highly successful executive leadership programs and coaching for clients. Annaliza is currently working on her book �Australian Leaders�. On 31st August, Annaliza will facilitate Creating Leaders: A Model in Construction Part 3 The Making of Leaders. Annaliza holds that leaders are self-made and explains how the relationship between cognitive processes and culture is critical in moulding leaders. This is a 3 part series. Speaker Profile: Barbara Etter

Barbara Etter is Assistant Commissioner of Corruption Prevention and Investigation WA Police (WAPOL). Barbara holds a Pharmacy degree, an Honours law degree, a Master of Business Administration in International Management and a Master of Laws in Comparative Law. Barbara is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Biomedical Scientists (FACBS) and has been admitted as a barrister and legal practitioner in NSW and the NT respectively. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor within the School of Law and Justice at Edith Cowan University. Barbara commenced with WAPOL in September 2004. She was a Commander with the Northern Territory Police and the Director of the Australasian Centre for Policing Research in Adelaide from 1999 to 2004. She commenced her policing career with the New South Wales Police in 1981. While in the NT Barbara undertook a two-year secondment to the Policy Section of the NT Attorney-General's Department, where she was able to utilise her legal skills and qualifications. Barbara has published quite extensively and has also co-edited and contributed to a book on Police Leadership in Australasia (Federation Press), with former Commissioner Mick Palmer of the Australian Federal Police. Barbara has particular interests in victims of crime, women in management, leadership, cross-cultural and diversity issues, law reform, forensic science, professional development, strategy and policy formulation, and policing research.

JULY 2006 - Leadership in the Public Service Breakfast Seminar

Dr Peter Shergold. Dr Shergold will talk about Leadership in the Public Service with Annaliza Jackson, who will interview Peter about his leadership journey in the Public Service.

Speaker Profile: Dr Peter Shergold

Dr Peter Shergold has been Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet since February 2003. He holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics. In 1985 Dr Shergold became Head of the Department of Economic History at the University and wrote Working Class Life (1982), edited The Great Immigration Debate (1985), was a major contributor to Convict Workers (1988). He has lectured the London School of Economics and Pennsylvania State University. He has twice been a Fulbright Scholar. In 1987 he joined the Australian Public Service to establish the Office of Multicultural Affairs and then became a Deputy Secretary in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in 1990. From 1991 he headed the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and was Public Service Commissioner from September 1995 to February 1998. Peter holds numerous positions on key Public Service Boards and speaks extensively on public service matters. Speaker Profile: Deputy Commissioner Chris Dawson

Chris was appointed Deputy Commissioner (Specialist Services) in the Western Australia Police in July 2004. His portfolio responsibilities include Specialist Crime including Major and Organised Crime, Forensic Divisions, Traffic issues on a state-wide basis as well as the Professional Development area which takes in all training conducted through the Police Academy and all recruiting matters. He is also responsible for all Counter Terrorism and State Protection issues. Chris undertook studies in the Strategic Management Program at the Scottish Police College and to conduct a review of the British and Scottish police training methodologies. He conducted further research in 1999 at a number of different Scottish police forces, the London Metropolitan Police College, the FBI National Academy and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police College. This research stemmed from a significant training, change management reform and capital works project with the construction of the new Western Australia Police Academy. Chris was the inaugural Principal at the new Police Academy. Chris attended the 2000 Police Executive Leadership Program (Graduate Diploma in Executive Leadership) at the Australian Institute of Police Management in Sydney. Chris was awarded the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service in 2002. Throughout his career, Chris has taken a personal and professional interest in the ethics and integrity training and development of Officers.

Professor Michael Levine will finalise this three part ethics program. The final session Understanding Ethics Theory vs Practice will re-cap and complete the discussion on theoretical decision making on questions of ethics and deal with how these divergent theoretical views on Ethics define Ethical decision-making and can be put into practice. The program will provide opportunities for questions, discussion and analysis of current event scenarios.

Ms Gningala Yarran-Clanton, Ms Gningala Yarran-Clanton will deliver �Ethics, Facts and the Law�An Indigenous Perspective�. Gningala Yarran-Clanton graduated with a Bachelor of Law in September 2002 and was Western Australia's first Aboriginal judges' associate with Justice Robert French. Gningala was admitted as a solicitor/barrister in the Supreme Court of Western Australia in May 2004, and continued to work at the DPP's office until she rose to become the first Aboriginal State Prosecutor in Western Australia. A Wongi/Yamitji woman on her mother's side and a Nyoongar/Gitja on her father's side, she is one of six children and mother of five delightful young daughters. Gningala is currently working with the Western Australian Police to help implement a transition program for Aboriginal Police Liaison Officers into mainstream police. Gningala also facilitates educative workshops for the Sexual Assault Referral Centre of Western Australia. Gningala is totally committed to supporting her Aboriginal and Indigenous community, in particular the innocent victims of violence, aggression and abuse.

Professor Greg Craven is a lawyer and academic. Currently, he is Executive Director of The John Curtin Institute of Public Policy at Curtin University, Western Australia's largest university public policy think-tank. He also holds a chair as Professor of Government and Constitutional Law. Prior to this, he was Foundation Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame Australia, and was a Reader in Law at the University of Melbourne. He served as Crown Counsel to the Victorian Government from 1992-95. His most recent book is Conversations with the Constitution (University of New South Wales Press, 2004).

Des Pearson has been the Auditor General for Western Australia since 1991. Des holds statutory appointments as a Commissioner of the State Records Commission. Des is a member of the Integrity Coordinating Group forming a critical corporate governance initiative for the Western Australian Public Sector. He is also a Member of the Federal Electoral Redistribution Committee for WA. Des has held positions as WA president of AIM, IPAA and CPAA including National President of CPAA. He is a former member of the Australian Auditing and assurance Standards Board and is currently a member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board.

Ricky Burges joined WA Local Government Association in February 2000. Prior to joining WALGA, she was the Director General of the Department for Culture & the Arts and prior that Chief Executive Officer of Perth Zoo. She has a Masters in Leadership and Management from Curtin University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Development, and currently undertaking a Doctorate in Business Administration at the University of Western Australia. Ricky sits on the board of Leadership Western Australia and is past President of the Australian Institute of Management. In 1997 Ricky was the Western Australian Businesswoman of the Year.

Hamish Milne is currently the Director of Professional Standards for the Anglican Diocese of Perth. He is responsible for screening policies and managing complaints involving sexual misconduct or abuse and education in the area of child protection. Until 2003 Hamish was the Sub-Warden and Assistant Business Manager of St Paul 's College, University of Sydney. In 2005, Hamish was awarded a Vincent Fairfax Fellowship, which is an ethical leadership program of the St James Ethics Centre in Sydney. He holds an Honours degree and postgraduate degree in History, University of Sydney, and an MBA, Australian Graduate School of Management. He recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Ethics at Murdoch University.

During this time, Kevin worked in both the Central (Canberra) and State (Perth) offices. These varying roles have exposed Kevin to the importance of workable policy and programme solutions for Aboriginal communities and individuals. In 2004, Kevin moved to the WA State Public Service, taking an opportunity to work in the Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR) Office of Aboriginal Economic Development. Kevin is currently acting Deputy Director General of the Business and Trade Services Group of DoIR and is responsible for: � Assisting Western Australian businesses grow � Working with industry groups to develop programs that strengthen the economy � Facilitating Western Australian exports � Increasing the participation of Indigenous Australians in the State�s growing economy.

Mr Karl O�Callaghan�s qualifications include a PhD (Curtin), Bachelor of Education (Curtin) and B.A (Curtin). He is an Adjunct Associate Professor (Sellenger Centre for Police Research) Edith Cowan University. Mr O�Callaghan entered the Police Academy in 1975, graduating as Dux of Course. In 1996 Mr O�Callaghan was promoted to Superintendent, Professional Standards and in 1998 was appointed to the management of the policing operations. In 2001, Mr O�Callaghan was appointed to the position of Assistant Commissioner, Strategic & Corporate Development. Mr O�Callaghan undertook the roles of Acting Executive Director and Acting Deputy Commissioner (Standards & Reform) until he was promoted into the position of Commissioner of Police in June 2004. In 1997 he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship and completed an international study of the development of ethics and professional standards education in police services.
