Maylands Yacht Club (MYC) is
located on the Swan River less than 5 km from the centre of
Perth. We sail a variety of classes, from the single handed
Laser and Moth, to a number of two-handed dinghies and trailer-sailers. Juniors
also have the opportunity to try their hand at sailing the
ever-popular Mirror, an ideal training dinghy, plus the single-handed Minnow.
Sailing in our Summer Series takes place on
Sundays from October through to April. Racing commences at 2.00
pm, while Sunday morning is reserved for training. A Winter
Series is held from May to September on the first Sunday of each month,
with the first of two short races starting at 1.00 pm.
In addition, a number of social events are held throughout
the year.
Maylands Yacht Club is essentially a family oriented club,
with a strong emphasis on enjoyment and helping those who
want to learn to sail.
Conditions are typically flat water and varying breezes,
with stronger winds occurring during the summer months. Gusts
and windshifts are a good test of helmsmanship, and skill
and tactics often win out over straight line speed.
A two page document that gives an overview of
MYC's history, membership, and training programme can be downloaded
here. It
includes some brief guidance on choosing a boat to suit your
needs.
Membership
Visitors are always welcome at MYC and we welcome new
members of all ages.
MYC offers a range of membership categories
including Junior, Full and Associate (Social). Should you have
any queries relating to membership, contact the Secretary by email or
on 9271 1232.
Newcomers to MYC are welcome to
participate in the training program or compete in racing but
are expected to complete a Membership
Form (click to
download) and pay
Membership subscriptions within three weeks of their beginning.
Training
The Training
Program is open to all age groups and caters mainly for those beginning
to sail. However, it is also open to those who may have sailed
before but feel the need to brush up on the basics.
Training
sessions are held each Sunday morning from 10.00a.m. – Noon.
However training participants need to be at the Club by 9.30a.m. to
help rig the boats.
MYC has a fleet of training boats. Some of these may be on-sold to interested members during the season.
Racing
Once you feel competent in managing a small sailing boat, a new dimension of fun awaits you.
Racing begins at 2.00 p.m. on Sundays. Most races are finished by 4.00
p.m. A social get together is then followed by a short
presentation ceremony held at 5.30 p.m. to
recognise place winners.
You do not need to be an expert to begin racing. The handicap system of
scoring makes it possible for less experienced sailors to win their
race. Racing means learning and improving skill levels.
